@@li-limandragon9287 honestly, I think people are blowing that problem up way to much. Just looking at the SAG union rates in order to make 70k in a year a VA would need to work 14.5 hour a month. Now, granted I’m not a member of the industry, I can’t say how easy or not it is to get a job, but with the rate being $400 for 4 hours, that literally just under 4 days of work a month. @@li-limandragon9287 The worth of voice actors is not comparable to that of live actors. While good voice acting goes a long way to bring the game to life and more accurately conveying who a character is meant to be and how they experience their emotions, it is far from the most vital aspect of a video-game's creation. Video-games can stand well on their own completely devoid of voice acting, provided everything else is well made. Outside of some incredibly small minority that I'm certain must exist, people do not buy video-games for the voice actors, or in other words, their is little to no fame to be bought in acquiring their talent for a project unlike with live actors. With some rare exceptions, as with something like Darkest Dungeon for instance, where the narrator's voice has become core to that game's identity. None of this is meant to be an argument against voice actors being paid better mind you, but people keep treating these positions like they should be the same when they objectively aren't. Perhaps there is something to be said about how this is partly due to a lack of marketing of voice talents (usually it's not presented as a big deal who is voice acting any given character), but that would just be conjecture at this stage.

Apples and oranges. Devs are employed by the company, VAs are contract work, they don't get a salary, they get commissioned. Taylor's whole schtick of leaving out key parts of the story reminds me of another similar incident off the top of my head. James C. Burns, who played Frank Woods in Call of Duty Black Ops 1, 2 and 4 was suddenly recast for Cold War. He then went on about how they gave him no warning and the like... Only for it to be revealed he had been warned several times over the years to stop using the Woods character to make money for his own projects, with his channel being straight up named "SGTFrankWoods" and his videos being weird half in character things, culminating in him accepting "donations" to voice the character in a Black Ops 1 mod before Activision's legal department noticed and shut it down (they then went and drank all that milk in the cafeteria to celebrate presumably) forcing the mod to use pre existing lines from the games. Like, the man IS Woods but he got so many warnings and just didn't listen, got recast and started calling for a boycott of the game and very similarly to Taylor started slating his replacement publicly, despite Woods' new VA stating something along the lines of "Burns IS Frank Woods and I can't change that." Then in another unrelated story there is the T.J Rotolo mess with Dead Rising 4 where he wasn't even asked to come back, got recast as Frank West by some guy who was probably more expensive and then got brought back to voice Frank in Marvel Infinite after DR4 crashed and burned.

@@kapkant6197 Pure speculation on my part here. I think DR4 was potentially an attempt at a soft reboot and they wanted someone else to play Frank going forward. Long standing VA for Sam Fisher was Micheal Ironside but for Blacklist they got a younger guy to take over the role. @@Valzahd I can ACTUALLY confirm Dead Rising 4 was a planned reboot. It came out about a year or two ago that Microsoft had a "first look" contract for Dead Rising where they got to see whatever prototype Capcom Vancouver made first and decide if they wanted to fund it. This was 2013 just after The Last of Us so Capcom Vancouver, wanting to get that Microsoft money, started work on a gritty story driven Last of Us style Dead Rising reboot (bottle throwing and all) which Microsoft loved. They then showed it to Capcom Japan in 2015 (who between this and several other cancelled projects, never checked to see what Vancouver was doing with their money) who immediately told them it wasn't Dead Rising and to change it and it also had to be out for the 10th anniversary. This is Pure Speculation™, of course, but here's what I think happened; I think Taylor actually liked being Bayonetta, and was quite proud of her performance. She tried playing hardball with her rate because she never imagined they would just replace her, and when they did, she was really hurt and upset by it. That's why she attacked Jen Hale as well as Platinum; no matter what she says now about wanting to put the whole thing behind her, she wanted to be Bayonetta. She wanted that character to be hers. She just let her greed get in the way, and when that cost her the role, she decided to be as petty and vindictive as possible because she was genuinely hurt by losing the role. It's a shame, really. She could have been forever known and beloved as the voice of Bayonetta, but now she will mostly be known for... _this._ A damn shame.

Also I would argue from the topic of "man everything is ethically compromised" that everybody has some sort of line. We have to stop treating everyone like product consumption has as much ethical productivity as actually being a decent person and not committing crimes. Everyone has a line when it comes to a person in a bubble rather harmlessly consuming a product, we need to just bother to draw it for ourselves because it's infinitely more complicated than basic human society. tldr: *You are not a bad person because the product you bought is ethically compromised, because by that logic there is not a single human being in first-world societies that is truly pure of heart.*
@jjj77902 жыл бұрын
This is true and I would also argue against treating passive consumption or passive “boycotting” as effective towards any meaningful change. If you want a company to stop doing unethical business practices, quietly deciding not to buy their products doesn’t do anything about that. Managers looking at sales numbers and missing profits could just as easily blame that on a shitty product or poor marketing instead of people not being fans of the orphan grinder or the serial rapist on staff. *You can’t buy/abstain product your way to a better industry.* Journalism, review-bombing and being annoying on twitter has probably done more for affecting company direction than any amount of quiet buying or boycotting.

At first with this situation, while not wanting to boycott it (as much as I love the games, I know they don’t sell particularly well, so it’s a miracle we got not 1, but 2 sequels), I was gonna wait for a major price drop months after release. Figured if I waited for it this long to come out, I can wait a few months more so they don’t get full price from me. And then the Hellena info came last week, and I just said, “you know what? Fuck it. I’m paying it Friday cause I just wanna play my dumb witch game and be happy.” While not siding with Nintendo for the actor pay shit, Hellena lying and the throwing shade on Jennifer Hale like that lost some good will for me. I still think we need to bring up awareness of of how shit VAs get paid, but some people won’t cause that happening will cause them to not listening to the genuine good thing she said. If you’e still gonna boycott it cause screw Nintendo/Platinum or just tired from this whole thing and don’t wanna play it, cool. It’s your money, use as you will, and don’t be a dick if someone doesn’t share those same thoughts. As for me, like I said, I’m gonna play it Friday and try my best to have fun with it cause honestly, this whole Hellena thing has left me drained.

So... Woolie was doing a mess with the 450 million math. here is what she did. When you see VGchartz, you see the sales of the series, then the sales of each game in all platforms, and then the sales of each game on each platform individually, but they are all listed in the same table. What she should have done would be to take the sales of the entire series and multiply that by 60 (still a crazy number because most of those were sold on sale but whatever) but she took that, then added every other number in that table, which means she was counting every game twice and sometimes even three times! that is where that crazy number comes from!

I think more than anything, this shows to wait for all the facts, at least when it comes to scenarios like this. As believable as Hellena's initial story was (and, honestly, how poorly Kamiya & PG handled the backlash), in time it made a COMPLETE 180 and now the truth has been revealed. Funny enough, if Hellena decided to be honest from the get go, this would be a very different discussion, about legacy characters and whether or not VAs are paid a reasonable wage for the work they do. Instead, this became a slap fight of epic proportion. What I do love is that because of this drama, Bayo 3 is going to do BETTER than it would've done otherwise. So I guess thanks Hellena
