Where do I start. First of all thank you for this spectacular tour of Bayonne. I am now 64 retired living in Florida. Born in 1957 Bayonne Hospital and lived on 79 Humphrey Ave downstairs apartment below the Tomski family. Mr John Tomski was a milk man if I remember and had a putting green in our side yard (between 4th & 3rd). Moved to 27 W 7th St 2nd floor in 1967 and finally left Bayonne for good in 1969 for the suburbs of Union county. This video gave me flashbacks of my early childhood and my family (all now deceased). Also, had many many relatives living downtown (St Andrews parish area) and most are dead as well I am guessing. For any old time Bayonne people here's what I remember... Uncle Milty's on 1st St, St Andrews School and church, The Lyceum and DeWitt (Now a McDonalds I think) movie houses (both of Broadway), the Bayonne Bridge (walked across Easter morning 1967 alone), The Bayonne Ferry on 1st St (fire early 1960s), Standard Oil fire 1960s, Fifth St Deliette & Elbaums (both on Broadway around 5th St), Hudson County Park (I think it's the Bayonne Park now, Hudson County Blvd (re-named JFK after he was assassinated), Bayonne Diner (8th St), Broadway Diner (uptown), Shop-Rite signs 4th St., Shelly Foods signs on Broadway (37th St I think), The Venice Pizza, Chris' Corner Humphrey & 2nd St, Gabe's Flying A station 7th & Bway, Vincent's Barber Shop on 4th St near the Blvd to get a Chicago Boxtop haircut, The Bergen Point Pharmacy on Humphrey & 4th, the firehouse on 4th St, a library on Broadway between 5th and 7th, my Uncle's watermelon trucks bringing fruits and vegetables, Congressman Cornelius Gallagher and going to his house for a school project, St Patrick's Day parades, the buses...Broadway buses were old and red, Ave C buses were more modern and just remembering going to Journal Square to the movies to see "Beckett" with my father was like going to Asia. First Yankee Game April 30th 1967 was like going to another planet. Most people didn't travel much and everyone smoked. Well, enough of rambling here...if there's anyone out there...please comment. I would love your feedback on Bayonne circa 1957-1969. Thank you for reading.

Just a quick reply to your post on Bayonne a little over a week ago. My family moved to Bayonne in the summer of 1960. My mother worked at the Naval base (later renamed the Military Ocean Terminal). We moved around a bit while I was in Bayonne (Summer of 1960 until summer of 1968). During that time, I attended three elementary schools, Washington School between 47th and 48th street on Ave B. (1st-3rd grade). Phillip G Vroom School for 4th & 5th grade. Located on 26th street between Ave. C and Broadway. And grades 6, 7th & 8th at Roosevelt School, 23th street between Ave. A and the Boulevard (torn down and rebuilt as some other school). I used to go to the movie theaters you mentioned (Lyceum and DeWitt). I remember (like yesterday) seeing “It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” at the Lyceum. During the summer my sister and I would go to the Municipal Pool on 16th Street. What I remember most is Christmas time and how the whole city would decorate for that holiday. I’m 66 now and live in Pennsylvania about 24 miles from Philadelphia. I just retired from my second job. I get to Bayonne every now and then (when I go on a cruise). After my family moved out, I got back to the area a few times for rock concerts at Roosevelt Stadium (it too is gone now).

I kinda have a soft spot for Bayonne. Have a lot of friends there so i've hung out there often over the years. Pretty chill area with NYC, Jersey City, and Hoboken a few short minutes away. Saw a lot of familiar areas in the video. Thanks for sharing this!

I'm glad to see this video! Bayonne is a french city too, in "Aquitaine" (department) , Pyrénées Atlantique (region). Located on the south west of atlantic coast of France, with 55 491 inhabitants, created in the 10th century in Gallo-Roman era . It is the country of rugby. Bonjour from Bayonne from France! :) I hope to visit your beautiful country one day.

I grew up in Bayonne in the early 60s (1960 -1968). It must be the pandemic, Broadway looks so quiet. Broadway was the main business section. It always had people walking and cars driving on it. The McDonald's on the right side (12:51 of the video) used to be where the DeWitt (movie) Theater used to be.

I thought the same thing. I didn't grow up in Bayonne but in Jersey City. We would always drive to Broadway to pick up girls. It was always so packed in the 1990's. People were everywhere no matter what time of the day. Especially around the McDonald's on 25 st. Looks like times have changed.

Moved to Bayonne and stayed there for over a year and some change really a great place. You got Jersey City, Manhattan, and Brooklyn close by so the big city vibe as close and you get to tone down back home cause Bayonne is pretty chill. Like a small town in the mix of big cities lol. Public transportation was great and I met some real good people I miss it a lot there

I’m going to be honest Bayonne is stating to get dangerous I have been living in Bayonne for 8 years now and nothing bad has happened until a man got shot in 17 street and a man got stabbed in 45 street. If you want to live in Bayonne make sure to lock your doors I’m not trying to scare you or anything but I’m just saying Bayonne is starting to get very dangerous the only good thing is that the cops here are fast tp if something happens they will catch them very fast so yea.

Down town was so much better to be when your a kid. Ya got the park with the spitting dolphins when it's boiling hot. The ball fields . That guy who had his hotdogs vending machine ,never missed a day.. and the view I loved

On Ave A down by the little league ball field on 1st St the houses from 1st up to Harrington's Repair shop on 4th st, which they rebuilt exactly on 1st and blew up. With the Bayonne Bridge in the background. My friend lived in the house they used. One day of filming I was walking my dog and a car stopped, nice mustang, the driver asked what he could get a cup of coffee, it was Tom Cruise. They also filmed in the Ironbound Portuguse/Brazilian neighborhood in Newark by Lafayette St and the highway scene is the West Shore Highway in Staten Island going from the Bayonne Bridge to the Goethals Bridge. My buddy lived just of the highway there. It's funny watching places you grew up in getting blown up by aliens. In fact after blowing up the"Gas Station" Spielberg built the little league baseball field on that spot for the city. Lived there all my life now living since 2013 in Brazil.

@@jngordon Your friend lived on the actual house used in the movie? I always liked that location and that house in particular, the bridge behind make of it a beautiful view. Unfortunately they put a giant pool on the backyard that takes all the space and the interior doesn't look like the movie at all.

So many suspicious deaths going back as far as the 60 that I know. Probably longer then that. Let's see if he passes the shoprite on Ave C. PS Tops dinner in the 80s was the absolute best
