Using a spotting rifle is by no means unique to the Thing. A lot of European-made tanks, even the latest ones, use this same method, where they have a coaxial gun set along the main cannon's barrel that they use to fire a tiny burst of tracers (usually 3 rounds), and once all of the rounds are seen to be hitting the target, they then fire the main cannon. It may be incredibly simple, but it obviously works.

So, since you asked 😂 : recoilles rifle ( riffled) or gun ( smoothbore) , is a type of lightweight artillery system or man-portable launcher that is designed to eject some form of countermass such as propellant gas from the rear of the weapon at the moment of firing, creating forward thrust that counteracts most of the weapon's recoil. This allows for the elimination of much of the heavy and bulky recoil-counteracting equipment of a conventional cannon as well as a thinner-walled barrel, and thus the launch of a relatively large projectile from a platform that would not be capable of handling the weight or recoil of a conventional gun of the same size. The key difference with an RPG is that recoilless weapons fire shells using a conventional smokeless propellant. While there are rocket-assisted rounds for recoilless weapons, they are still ejected from the barrel by the deflagration of a conventional propelling charge. 🤘❤️🇪🇺🇺🇲

Never heard of Beehive rounds? I carried 4 x 40mm beehive rounds for my M79 in the 1970’s. And our XO, who had been an artillery officer in Vietnam, told us about his 105mm howitzers having Beehive rounds that they could use for Final Defensive Fire. (I believe USArmy refers to it as Final Protective Fire)

Fun fact the beehive round isn't just used on the thing. ANY piece of artillery can use them. In Vietnam they were used when the bases were attacked by the VietCong or NVA. Imagine a 90, 105 or 152 mm gun firing a beehive tracer rounds at you. They even made them for 40mm grenade launchers. Now we use Killer Junior and Killer Senior techniques employing artillery direct fire air bursts over ground troops. In other words unless your cover has a roof it's useless.

It's not a bazooka it's 105 recoiless rifle. The loader had to open the door in the back and the load thing while standing out side of the tank. My best friend was an ontos commander while in the Marines

It sucks they got rid of all of these but I suppose at the same time it does make sense for them to recoup some of the money new and better armored vehicles were created. As for the flechette rounds they were made to give tanks a more effective anti-infantry weapon as a major issue of heavy armor was their lack of speed which allowed enemy soldiers to literally swarm onto the tanks and destroy it with explosives.

The difference is in the ammunition entirely. Recoilless rifle: rifled bore, propellant is situated in a shell and never leaves the "pipe" and the projectile reaches Vmax (MAXimum Velocity) at the muzzle Recoilless gun: smooth bore, projectile reaches Vmax at the muzzle, needs special ammo with the externals of a rocket and internals and work principle of a rec.less rifle cartridge Rocket Launcher: launches (self-propelled rocket motors and self-stabilising) rockets which leave behind no remnants like a shell or unburnt propellant and reaches Vmax in-flight Not a pro, just regurgitating Wikipedia. 😂
