This was sweet, but I am wondering why this sounded better to me when I played it (mistakenly at first) in B flat Dorian, than in B flat Mixolydian?

If you look at the two scales, you'll notice that the only difference is the third degree. In a way, you can think of Mixolydian as a major version of Dorian, and vice versa.
