That's why when I see comments like "But she's still her mother, but he's still her father... they should help them". I get triggered. People who say things like this do not know how it feels like to have horrible parents.

It also doesn't help that Korean's in perticular are taught to respect their parents/elders/seniors NO MATTER what. In general that's a good thing but it also excuses abuse in a lot of cases

Using Microdot who was FIVE YEARS OLD FFS, netizens were demanding that he makes reparations. Same with Rain. He minimized blemish on his career and young family by settling as a filial son. He was a poor kid who knew nothing about it and became a self-made man. It's dreadful. There should be a law where schemes committed by family are not dumped as reparation lawsuits (i.e. extortion) on innocent children who became successful and some lawsuits come decades after bad loans or other schemes. One actor recently learned that his own brother defrauded him for millions of dollars as a scheming 'money manager parasite'.

I do relate to their experiences, because I do have a father issues. I lost my mom 2012 and my father is constantly winning for money, drinking, he has a hoarding disorder 😕, I decided to pay his debt...it is so hard to take care for him from a distance (my brother and I do live in a different countries and I think it's for the better). Stop living of your child(ren). If you, yourself did not become famous or have the luck in your youth, than you were not to be in that position! I can not stand parents that receive money for their kids but spend it on themselves, or take advantage of the fame their child(ren)'s fame. It drives me crazy!

My dad is one of the most ill-disciplined people that I know when it comes to money. When I got my first job I ended up in major debt because I was trying to take care of things he should have been doing for my family and wanted to cover the family shame. Once I wised up I became the villain in the family because I would tell him no, I refuse to go down that rabbit hole again, and mind you he is a director of a government department but refuses to use his mind. I am currently known as a selfish person in my family but I am okay with that because I putting myself first and building my own life, had I not been so naive early on I would have bought my first house at 23 because I have a good job and only 7 years later am I getting my own house and assets and I am not even Korean but African. If what your parents want you to do is putting you at disadvantage and crippling you then don't do it.

While I admire the closeness of Korean families, I think there should be a line drawn in terms of what a member is responsible for. My own mother fled Korea when I was a child due to gambling debts - apparently so bad that she ran afoul of some really shady underworld characters - and left her family with holding the bag. I once asked her about the situation and if she felt bad for what she did and know what she said? She scoffed and replied that it was their responsibility b/c they were her family. Warped. She's in her 60s now and despite a brief reconciliation, her family has changed their phone numbers and are no doubt grateful she lives across the world from them. However, I still occasionally have to deal with her hustling lifestyle. Luckily the US doesn't have the same societal expectations from family. I've been embroiled in some issues due to her constant scheming and bad decision-making (like when she inserted herself into the life of a woman dying of cancer and then tried to sue the woman's family when she found out that she wasn't left all her property after she passed despite her three months of "care," opening accounts in my name, pyramid schemes, using men for their money and clearing out their savings - many other repulsive actions that I won't list here) but was able to put some boundaries in place as I got older and consider myself blessed to have turned out relatively normal despite the awful parenting and childhood trauma she put me through.

There shouldn't be any law that requires anyone to pay for another person's depts (regardless of their relations to each other), unless they took the such loan together. Shame on the people that lend money to individuals because they're related to famous person. These celebs are working their butts off to make a living for themselves (andtheir actual families that cares for them), then comes the undeserving parent/relatives/friends, trying to rip them off. Also, shame on the Korean viewers/public that criticize these celebs of something that is not even their fault. This is very sad.
@troll1321

That doesn't stop anything. You can still fake someone's name on documents as a partner in the loan. There are many ways to do that.
@troll1321
@troll1321 2 жыл бұрын
Also laws won't stop certain loan agencies from commiting borderline illegal yet not illegal acts from coming after family members etc of the person who signed the loan. Like if that person signed loan, disappeared, you as the wife etc depending on country and law don't have to pay back that loan because you didn't get the loan. But that doesn't stop let's say a loan shark from staking out your job, stalking you, harrassing you, etc. Which will cause you stress, ability to function, you may lose your job if you boss is not understanding enough, etc. And police won't be much help because some of these things don't actually warrant a big enough punishment. Just watch how police treat stalkers. No real reppercussions.

For all my love of kculture, filial piety is one of the things that has drifted towards a hatred than an admiration over the years. One of the similarities SK & NK have, inherited sin. It's emotional manipulation at the end of the day and it's sanctioned when the society and authorities do nothing to protect you and stop it. Why? Because they want to keep doing stupid things and have someone who feels shame to blame.

I totally agree. Seeing the stranglehold parents have on their children in this culture, for me, the term "filial" has a very negative connotation. It's like children are born into servitude and obligated to a lifelong responsibility to allow their lives to be ruled by their parents.

Children should not be held responsible for their parents' sins, faults or debts. Unless it was a debt they created together. And why do all of these business people give loans to people who claim their children are rich? Smart people would then require the debtor to provide their child's phone number so they can call to inform the child about the loan and confirm that he/she is willing and able to pay it back if their parent fails to pay after an agreed-upon payment deadline. Parents who abandon their children should receive nothing from their child's estate. Don't make a baby/don't have a baby if you cannot afford to take care of that child. Thank God for grandparents. They make all the difference in the world to their grandchildren.

Shouldn't they have called that child to begin with. These fools need to take some responsibility for their own actions. This is one thing that South Korea needs to change. You can't blame a child for their parents debt and make their lives miserable. First - Let's start with Mamamoo's Wheehin who's had no contact with her father including his whereabouts. Microdot (who was 5 when his parents ran off to New Zealand, poor Rain whose (by then ) dead mother and father allegedly ran unto debt and he as a 'good child' was somehow responsible for paying it back?! K-nets were howling about 5 year old Microdot compensating his mother's victims once he reached adulthood. (The hag seems entitled still - easy to find). Rain was a kid and knew nothing about it but settled out of court once successful. There are many many more. Lee Jung-Jae helped repay a portion of his mother's debt though had nothing to do with it in '15. BTOB's Minhyuk's mother ran up debt which he paid off for her. Some parents were defrauded (as IU's and she was raised by her grandmother and many came from very poor families who still supported their kids and in return children took care of them, but tat's different). As a most tragic turn, how could you miss Super Junior's Leeiteuk's tragedy? His estranged father never reached out to his son and committed suicide after becoming deeply depressed over failed business and killing his sick parents. Second - what the hell about cheerful voice throughout including 'she left for a better place' with suicide mentioned like a new outfit or move to a new apartment?

We all would do the same in this situations. BUT if my parents are horrible parents, leave me in a early age, we haven't contact for many years and suddenly they came back and use my name for cloud or believe i am responsible to pay for their bills, they are wrong, absolutly wrong... I was shocked to read the story. But I guess she was influenced by the father. The father is way, way worse and even use Soo Hyun's name for his comebacks.

He is so kindhearted. No wonder he was very blessed. He was also one of the most generous actor giving millions for donations. Maybe he just don't hold grudges to his father afterall. His mom really raised him well.

I don’t know how they can get a loan just because their kids are famous. If the child who is a celebrity did not sign for it they should not be obligated to pay. In the US. You can’t get a loan like that. Signature as a co-signer is a must. I find that ridiculous.

I don't know what kind of loose financial system operates in Asian countries that people can take loans out using other people's names. Why would any institution give a loan to anyone using the name of their child? Other than a legal spouse, no other family member should be responsible for the debts incurred by any family member. I would NEVER pay their debts or give financial support to someone that was trying to use me for my money.

I have an aunt that constantly trying to leech my mom's wealth and fortune. Guilt tripping her that her life is miserable and how my mom's so lucky to marry a wealthy man (father). Begging me for some money, but then spread bad rumors if our family rejects her plea. That alone is a headache, and she is only just my aunt. Imagine if I had that kind of mother... The shivers...

I would have the laws changed in SK that holds a child responsible for the debts a parent incurs when there was no contract between the parent / child for the child to cover any expenses. The parents need to step up or take a hike.

Is there any way to get out of family debt in S Korea? Can you have yourself removed from the family registry, so you are no longer a family member? What does it take? In the US I have no responsibility for any debts that I haven't signed off on, except for marital debt. And even as a married person, my name needs to be on any loans for major purchases such as a home or a business venture.
