I just watched a Jordan fundamental training video and he say's when on offence dribble/drive, dribble/shoot you should protect the ball your off hand with your opposite leg , for example against good defenders with long hands ie. Pippen.

Bringing the ball/hand over to the shooting side rather than bringing it down and going back up each time - that's genius! I'd also add though - a big mistake a lot of players make when shooting off the dribble is not rising UP on the shot. Even when you're fading away, pushing up, with a slight lean backwards will make it much more likely to go in!

I do also keep the off-hand raised but usually to ward off reach-ins. I never thought about the shot preparation like this, as I generally use stepaways or hops to create that separation. Midnight streetball tourney is tomorrow, so I'll be trying out this move, see what it does for me. Very informative video, I like picking up little things to incorporate into my game.

As somebody who prides themselves in their defence. Good defenders have active hands, twitching, anticipating. I feel that I could easily get great challenge/deflection if somebody used this technique. With a stationary dribble, me as the defender has the advantage if you end up shooting.

What you don't understand is that this is a way to create an open shot. Proximity of the defender is meaningless if he can't get up to contest soon enough. Same reason we use the jab step, step back or pivot moves on the catch. If you're taller than your defender this is an easy way to get a quick clean look at a jumper.

Sorry... This is ridiculous. For one, you don't shoot with a defender that close to you. Even if you could get that shot off, it would still be a terrible, low percentage shot. Secondly, the shooting mechanics are all wrong. Ask the coach at ProShot what he thinks of this maneuver. He's bringing the ball across his body, so there is no dip. By keeping the wrist flexed the entire time, he introduces tension which will make the release inconsistent. Good shooters do not walk around the court with their wrists flexed. In fact, they usually catch the ball with a loose wrist, often with hand on top of ball instead of behind it. For example, go watch the video of Ray Allen making that shot in game 6. In a very very quick, catch and shoot situation, he catches with his hand on top of the ball. Quick pull up jumpers are about making space. It's about getting your defender off balance or leaning back on his heals. It's about timing. It's really lower body quickness more than hand quickness. About the only thing correct in this video is the left hand bringing the ball to the right side of the body instead of the other way around. However, I feel that any player who shoots his normal shot with the hip and elbow aligned with the basket will automatically do this. The only people who would have trouble with it are the ones who shoot with the ball starting on the opposite side of the body. Those people need to work on fixing their regular jump shots before they get into the pull-up jumper.

These techniques redefine what an open shot is. Combine this with shooting off the dribble using the hop and it won't matter how close the defender is, he simply won't do anything to affect the shot. Having your wrist flexed is absolute NOT what ProShot means about tension. Having the wrist flexed is a really important skill to have in order to prepare for the shot. You should really reassess what he's teaching here.

BBALLBREAKDOWN ... I appreciate that you take the time to respond to comments. Also, just so we're clear, I'm a fan of bballbreakdown. I subscribe. I watch most of the videos. It's a great channel. That said... perhaps the technique should have been demonstrated at full speed in a game-like situation. From the way he's showing it, it simply looks like a quick shot with very little legs involved. That's a very poor way to shoot a jumper. Moreover, if ProShot hasn't specifically made a video about the tensed wrist, he probably will soon. He's actually mentioned in a video about how he's observed players catching with loose wrist. I don't think he's completed his video research to present it yet. However, make no mistake, most great shooters don't walk around with flexed wrists. It's the same concept as not dipping the ball. It's an old time piece of advice that isn't really true.

Agree with you, an athletic, elite defender WILL affect that shot, especially if he had scouted the shooter. Plus that method is rushed, with little rhythm and "touch" to the shot itself, hardly a shot/method used by elite shooters (D1 and NBA).

You don't need to dip off the dribble since the ball is already low, that's been stated by ProShot before. I can see the wrist being tense, but maybe a compromise between a relaxed wrist and a wrist that's ready to shoot can be made? I think the most important thing about this entire video is moving the ball from the off hand to the shooting hand..

I think a lot of people don't really understand the concept of the move he's educating you with. It is actually a VERY effective move. Watch the video a couple of times, go outside and practice it, or even email BBall Breakdown to break it down more for you before you post foolish comments.

I remember a time when you only could shoot when you were wide open please kids develop with your team and work together to get open practice on knocking down shots off screens get in the weight room get under the bar and get your screen game right develop your hips to be strong focus on defense and please only work on creating your shot like this on last second situations when there is no other option playing like this will drive a great coach nuts.

the entire motion seems rushed, not quick. my idea of a quick release isn't necessarily the motion itself, the but realizing the opportunity and reacting in time. in my opinion, this technique seems to promote forcing a shot as opposed creating necessary space for an open shot. what would be a practical in-game situation where this technique would be useful? and for what type of player?

getting the ball off quick is one thing getting space is another. Rythm is the key to shooting consistantcy. I can see your point but your shoot will be incosistant this way. get a good rythm then flow into your shot.

4:25: That statement is simply false. Good shooters don't usually flex their wrists while they stand. 5:44: You should not pick up the ball like that to shoot. There's a large amount of side-to-side movement there. As far as I know almost all good shooters with standard shooting mechanics keep their non-dribbling hand wrists in a relatively straight, natural, relaxed position. This idea that it would be useful to flex the shooting hand wrist is strange here as hand quickness isn't really a problem in quick dribble pull ups. The problem Coach Nick talked about is a separate, basic shooting mechanics issue. Usually, when you talk about getting quicker shots off the dribble, you talk about getting low enough while dribbling so that you don't need a separate dip and then exploding straight up while maintaining control of your core. Also, getting the correct alignment for your shot on a very quick release off the dribble is difficult - that's why you see correction movements like the hip rotation from Steph Curry or the leg kicks from Tracy McGrady. This was a strange video on a channel that's pure gold.

This video is not very helpful. the 1:36 mark, know body dribbles like that, it's unnatural, it's an unathletic stance, and you lose the ability to crossover the ball effectively with your right hand dangling out there like that. Absolutely no basketball player looks like that when they are playing except for people who haven't played before, this guy honestly moves like a tv actor doing a basketball scene who doesn't play basketball. At the 2:19 mark he says that players bring the off hand over to the side with the ball FIRST then brings it back into the shooting pocket before they shoot. Are you f'n kidding me??? Know one actually does that, absolutely know one, everyone pretty much pulls up the way he did at the 2 min mark, pretty much bringing the ball across your body into your shot on a quick 90 degree angle. At the end of the day, it only takes 0.5secs to get a shot off, it's very rare for a defender to block a pull up, i don't care if you're in high school, college or the nba, how many times in a game do you see some ones pull up getting blocked, very rare, add in the fact that their reaction is always gonna be slower to your initial move, plus defenders usually have their hands low in the first place so they wont get it up fast enough to block it any ways. IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A FASTER RELEASE, WORK ON MAKING YOUR LAST DRIBBLE BEFORE YOU PULL UP A HARD DRIBBLE. Coach Nick, you're better than this.

23MoneyE Ehhh, I'm pretty meh on your assessment. Having your wrist in ready position is always a good idea - it'll allow you to then dribble, pass, or shoot. At the upper levels of HS and beyond, if you don't improve your speed, you ain't gonna get that shot off if it's too slow. Sorry.

BBALLBREAKDOWN I don't think having your wrist in the ready position at all times is really necessary. I feel that you could easily move your wrist into ready position before bringing the ball across your body in order to make a pull up and it would be just as quick as if you had it there the whole time. Having your wrist in that position the entire time is awkward, not athletic and doesn't really help if you ever need to crossover or change directions while dribbling. I think the main focus here should be bringing the ball to your hand instead of the hand to the ball.

Tbh this guy was horrible in the video, but I was able to get his technique through and took it into account in my shooting form off the dribble. I gotta tell you. This technique really became another arsenal in my sleeves in the court. I mostly use it to pass the ball or drive in. I would only shoot it when I create space from my defender. Great tip! Thanks! Btw. It's been three weeks since I started practicing these moves, and I became less rusty with my shot especially at clutch moments of the game.

I think it is hard to get momentum or good timing with this. I much prefer to drive and stop with a hop into my shot. I also don't have a shot pocket since I shoot in one motion. I'm actually better at pulling up with my strong hand into my shot, I can feel my turn big time when pulling up with my right hand.

1. Poor rythym for any shooter - there's no dip, no consistency with the movement, low percentage shot even if defender doesn't put his hand up to contest. 2. Bringing the ball across the body with 1 hand like that is much slower and very obvious for the defender to read than this video indicates, not to mention its much easier to lose control the ball -> turnover. 3. By dribbling that close to your body and having your other hand cocked back like that, you're telling the defender you're going to shoot yes, but I disagree with it opening up your drive. Because your arms and feet are so close together, the mechanics are awkward, your drive/cross-over is going to be very slow and much easier to defend. The reason 'Quick release off the dribble' works is because they think you're going to DRIBBLE->aka drive/crossover, which means they are not prepared for the quick pull up because they're scared of the blow by. This idea seems creative and no offense to Tony but that is some weird basketball he plays.

BBALLBREAKDOWN Tbh I'm not sure about this. I think the pros are that you'll get a quicker shot. But the cons are that for not great shooters you won't get the dwade pump fake fouls. And as a bad shooter I can tell you I depend on that a lot. I mean if your a great shooter then yes it'll work really well because you want to get it up as quick as possible. Also I think the hand in hip position makes it difficult to drive.

Really need to bring in pro trainers like Drew Hanlen again or impossible trainers. Tony may have some good concepts but his demonstration makes it look like he's tap dancing or playing something else, not basketball. Drew has some great pull up drills, way better and fluid than this demo.
