It took Stockton 3 years to win the starting position from the great Ricky Green. The next 9 years in a row he lead the league in assists and was in the top five in assists AND steals most of his 19 yr career. Played both ends of the court. Incredibly he stole the ball just 0.6 times less a game for his career than he turned it over. Averaged basically a perfect game with his ball handling and decision making. Shooting was superb averaging 51, 38, and 82% from the line. Steph Curry as of now 47, 42 and 90% from free throws. Stockton didn't shoot threes at the start of his career since it wasn't considered a good shot averaging only 0.3 threes a game his first three yrs. His most threes averaged a game- 2.8 attempts shooting 44% from deep. He went over forty percent from three seven times but his forte was getting in the paint and setting everyone up. How tough was John Stockton? He barely missed ANY games his entire 19 year career. At age 40, he played in all 82 games. This despite the fact that he was one of the smaller guys in the league, battled against men 6-10 inches taller, 50+ lbs heavier. Considering how soft the league is now and how guys are content to sit out for three weeks with a hangnail. Way tougher than anybody today.

Was in Spokane a lot and Stockton was a year younger than me. Smart, tough, and never "took a play off." He'd take the most vicious hits on picks that he'd set, and get right up. 19 years with the Jazz & they made the playoffs every year. Only missed 22 games in his Hall of Fame career. 6'1" 170 lbs of heart and determination. Other players hated his focus and lack of trash talk; but every player respected him. Truly extraordinary player and person. His assist and steals records will never be broken! I appreciate him and his career. He was great, but never cocky. Good job, John!

“pure pg” doesn’t mean anything at all. Any position player is to be judged on their impact on the game when ranking them. There are pure PG’s who never won anything, and their are non pure PG’s who have won a lot. Magic, Steph, Zeke… easily better PG’s than Stockton. It’s a weak excuse to say “ya but player X wasn’t a pure PG”. Who cares, they were a PG no matter how you define one. Steph agreed to let the ball be taken out if his hands l, going from averaging 8.5 assists with Jackson as coach, to 6 assists playing off the ball. End of the day, he plays the PG position and is far more effective for his team than Stockton ever was for his. Impact defines greatness. Stockton wasn’t the greatest PG. Any argument to the contrary needs some mvps and rings to back it up.

He still suited up that night after the car being totaled, who knows what he had as far as pains, aches and a concussion? When asked, he said he was fine. He didn’t care, he kept on playing. John is class. When I was a ref in little league, I had the pleasure of doing his sons game. Stock would walk the sideline as a parent, he never complained about any calls or anything. He would talk to me as I would go up and down the sideline. He takes no bs from anyone on the court, I see him as the Larry Bird mentality. He gives it all he has and plays hurt. He would light you up if you weren’t expecting it.

@@fifthdimension8142 I would say that Steph Curry is the best shooter of all time, and possibly the best scorer of all time! Those right there are two huge statements. What is the purpose of a point guard? To manage the floor, run the offense, distribute the ball, to pass!! And, he brought it on both sides of the court, Stockton was a great defender (most steals all time). To be honest it's not really a good comparison comparing Stockton & Curry. They are completely different players. Steph is the the best shooter ever. Stockton was the the best to ever run the point guard position. His assists and steals records will never be broken. Almost 20 seasons with as many missed games in his career. Made the playoffs every season. Best point guard ever.

Why is John Stockton never in conversation for GOAT? JS is all time leader in steals and assists by wide margjn. MJ leads in nothing. Some would point out MJ has 7 rings to JS 0. Well if that is criteria then Bill Russell is GOAT with 11 rings. BR or Wilt would be all time leader in Block Shots if they kept that stat back then. MJ was easily best marketed player of all time. If I'm starting a team with today's rules assuming player is in his prime it's Stockton, Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, or maybe John Morant. I think I go with KD. If I'm starting team with rules before 3 pt shot when centers were relevant my choice would be JS, Issah Thomas, Wilt, BR, L. James, or Magic. Guards took pounding and had to set screens. JS is one who could play under any rules. He's humble so teammates would kill for him. He was that very rare great player who sacrificed to make his team better.

Yeah...it was more than that, he'd fuck with people on the court. He was a sneaky bastard. I'm not saying that to diss him, but it's true. He was sly and used the rules of the game to his benefit. Kind of like Harden today, except in a sneakier way. The game isn't physical like it was back then, so Harden draws BS fouls. Stock would get under people's skin and get absolutely hacked. Or do shit like you saw on the fast breaks, slow down at the last millisecond and get fouled.

Best PG ever and easily one of the top 20 players of all time. There are 5 mayor stats, points, assists, rebounds, blocks and steals. He is the all time leader in two of them. Basketball is not only dunks and flashy players. Not only he has those two records, he only missed 20 games in his entire career. That's crazy. And he always made it to the playoffs. Him and Malone one of the best duos ever. I miss that old NBA.

If you need to build a team around a solid pt guard… I would pick either John Stockton or Maurice Cheeks… Curry third. Curry is sneaky good with his off ball play, but doesn’t have the same grit as Cheeks and Stockton but makes up for it with his shooting. But I will take grit/determination over high level skill at pt guard. Rod Strickland was amazing also at getting to the hoop and getting his shot off while taking hard fouls.
