I hope these old news broadcasts are all properly archived at the BBC, ITV etc and someday the public will have full access to them all. In the meantime, these amateur uploads are essential. Thanks and keep up the good work!

Afraid not; some of the film inserts were kept but not the full programmes as broadcast.

+Paul Sawtell Actually, I don't think that's correct. I've heard the full news programmes as broadcast ARE archived - and kept for around 30 years. That's primarily done for legal reasons, and so that programme extracts are available for TV documentaries, etc.

Gavin, you've got that time scale confused somewhat. The full programmes are only archived for 30 *days*, not 30 years. Anyone wanting to begin legal action over something libellous broadcast has 30 days from the date of broadcast to begin legal action. After that? Tough shit! Some full programmes are archived, but this is pretty much on an ad-hoc basis. There was no formal archiving policy beyond 30 days for full news or sports programmes. It's the reports themselves that were considered to be of main interest at the time and now, not the full programmes.

Excellent theme tune. Made you sit up and listen. All facts, no bullshit fake news.

Deadpan , factual and trusted with no apparent bias. How things have changed at the BBC.

I remember John Cole working as political editor BBC up to around 1992 when he retired at the age of 65 (which was compulsory at the time). Sadly John died in 2013 (aged 85) leaving a wife, four sons and several grandchildren.

Boy, those were some vintage file pictures of Torquay they came up with. A lot of the fascination of these is spotting cars that you hardly see now; a Morris Ital police car 10:05!!

These images are so familiar to me, that clock and the gold letters. So nostalgic.

I’ve got the Master CD theme tune used in that edition, it’s by George Fenton, only the two tracks, it’s a real masterpiece opening and close titles.

A couple of months before the reboot into the 2 presenter format and the move of the late regional bulletins to 9:25pm when the regional closedown bulletins were scrapped in September 1980 were there plans in 1980 to move the closedown regional summaries to after The 9' O Clock News and if so were they delayed

oO(Didn't Tatum O'Neil become Michael Jackson's girlfriend?) '[...] Britain adopted the gold standard and guinea became a colloquial or specialised term. However, it continued to be used into the 20th century as a unit of account, especially for luxury items such as art *in the world of horseracing,* worth 21 shillings or £1.05 after decimalization.' ~ en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guinea_(coin)

Spectre of terrorism as usual. Interesting no real mass panic. These stories today would be accompanied by mass hashtags, fb posts and general hysteria. #twa847 #beirut #seasidebombs #irabomb #bombthreat #jimmypalmer #releasetwa847
