Maybe, maybe not. It represents a serious loss of income for the BBC and the government may decide to replace the licence with a settlement out of general taxation, whereupon the BBC may feel they have the licence (pun intended) to broadcast even more political bias and generally crap entertainment content. One things for sure; no government would ever allow the BBC to show adverts in the UK. So the BBC have a "Corrections and Clarifications" web site. On this evidence, I wonder if it says Jimmy Savile never did anything wrong and he never worked for the BBC.

I've always thought the second most disgusting thing about the tv license was charging blind people half price 'to watch live broadcast tv'. Being "legally blind" does not mean that you can't see a thing, they can still see to a degree, just not as well as a fully sighted person. A simple Google search says "If you're legally blind, your vision is 20/200 or less in your better eye or your field of vision is less than 20 degrees. That means if an object is 200 feet away, you have to stand 20 feet from it in order to see it clearly. But a person with normal vision can stand 200 feet away and see that object perfectly.

Well, it's still bloody wrong on the corrections site. Reminds me of trying to apply for PIP.... They use weird definitions for things, vague and require reading through reams of documents to understand if you fall into a category or not. The purpose is to try and get as few people on their system as possible, or in the case of the BBC to confuse people into thinking they need to be on the system. I moved into my own flat recently, out from family. My sister was telling me I had to get a TV license, it wasn't an option. I don't watch any sort of TV, nor do I watch any sort of streaming service because there's frankly nothing good on and to my knowledge streaming services shouldn't even fall under the TV license's jurisdiction anyways. I applied for the opt-out thing and they mentioned "live services such as [...] KZbin". That threw me off so hard because why in the god damn fuck does a video hosting site owned by an American company where almost all its content is uploaded by the users themselves fall under the BBC's control? Well Government website specifically states that KZbin does NOT fall under it and closer looking at the phrasing makes it sound like it might potentially refer to KZbin livestreaming? I mean that's still BS but sure, whatever... BBC overreaching as per usual. I don't believe they have any real way of checking if you need the license, my TV isn't smart so doesn't get streaming services and I have no boxes tied to it, so if they did break into my house to check they'd pretty quickly figure out I have no way of watching TV anyways.

The fact there's people that contact you to say that if you have a TV you need a license is shocking
@cyqry
@cyqry Жыл бұрын
That's my biggest problem with how the TV license is phrased. Sometimes its "if you have a TV", sometimes its specific types of services, sometimes its just for watching BBC. Hell, I remember looking at their OWN site that stated if you use "live services such as ... KZbin". When you look at the Government's site it actively states that KZbin does NOT count. My best guess here is they're talking about livestreaming from KZbin but even then that sounds like absolute bullshit because that's users doing that not anything that the BBC might have agency over. I was almost going to give in and just get one when I saw them mention KZbin because clearly they're overstepping their boundaries and trying to use everything as an excuse to need a license, hell I wouldn't be surprised if they said watching DVDs you bought required a license soon enough. Thankfully I don't have any sort of box attached to my TV nor any broadcasting services to my name, they can check my bills for all I care, so they have no way of proving I require it beyond some arrogant belief that anyone gives a shit enough about the BBC to watch them.

Something else that might surprise people. You also need a TV license to watch live television that's broadcast from ANYWHERE outside of the UK. It doesn't matter what country the broadcast is from. If you're watching it in the UK whilst it's being shown live in any other country then you've gotta pay the BBC. In France you are now paying more for National French television, than when you had a licence fee. The cost of the National French television was simply moved and added to VAT in France (VAT was increased to cover it). No. The BBC wanted to put a no-licence-no-view restriction on all catch-up streaming services run by other broadcasters. This would have covered the likes of All4, ITV-Hub, My5, and UKTV. The independents told the BBC to take a hike, and there was nothing it could do about it. That's why the Player is the only one behind a (virtual) paywall. Parliament was unwilling to upset its commercial friends by making it a law, so it never happened and the BBC had to retreat with it tail between its legs. I think the reneging on the over-75s was a petulant revenge move.

My brother in law back 1990s used to have a radio receiver specifically for receiving television transmitions, no licence was needed for it as no visual transmissions could be received, the only reason he had the receiver was because he was (a total) blind person, and yet he still had the occasional visit from the goons, but my bil was so clued up even if they gained access to his property he could blind the goons with science and they left with their heads spinning so much they should not have got behind a steering wheel

This. I moved into my own flat recently after living with family and saw that the opt-out thing mentions you still need a license for using a live service like KZbin. KZbin is a video hosting site, most people don't touch the "live" aspect of it. Also its owned by an American company and almost all of its content is user-created. BBC would have no jurisdiction over it whatsoever. But I very nearly folded and just got the license because of that. Then I realised my TV isn't smart so I can't use live services on it and I don't have any TV box nor would any services be tied to my flat except for broadband (to which my contract states its ONLY broadband, no phone or TV) so if they did try to force their way into my home they'd find no evidence whatsoever to justify their actions. Take me to court, I'll happily bring my TV and all the bills I have with BT to prove that I have no way of using a TV service. If they continue to insist then I'll give them a whole long-winded speech about how arrogant they are to think the BBC broadcasts anything worth watching.

I believe that the government came to an.agreement with the BBC concerning the free over 75s licences, the government allowed the BBC to raise the license fee at above inflation on.condition that the BBC kept the free over 75s licences. Unfortunately for the BBC so many people have stopped paying the telly tax they decided to reneague on.the agreement,to make up the financial shortfall caused by people not paying the telly tax.

A bit out I think. Government agreed a tv tax rise and as part of the deal the BBC was supposed to take over the 'cost' of the over 75 free viewing. Rather than get a hand out from the government to cover the loss of potential tv tax of it. So not really the Government avoiding the promise, they had an agreement for the bbc tv tax rise to cover it in effect

As an American I find the concept of a TV license as absolutely ridiculous from a freedom standpoint. What good is free speech if your not allowed to listen to anyone without paying a TV Fee/Tax. It's beyond silly and worthy of ridicule. Isn't your BBC already payed for by your taxes? We Americans have tossed shiploads of tea into the harbor for less.

You're right, the BBC is paid for by our taxes. The intention there was to keep it free of advertisements, whereas other channels need ads to fund themselves. Not watched TV for a long time because frankly there's fuck all worth watching these days, but I seem to recall BBC channels having ads now as well. They're just greedy bastards trying to increase their revenue as much as possible. To my knowledge, they have no real means of checking if you need it, they use vague definitions to convince you to get the license or to win in court, threats to try and make you fold, and goons at your door though they rarely have an actual warrant. Lots of underhanded tactics. Shame we can't toss the BBC itself into the harbour. With all the privatized water companies now spewing waste into our seas, we might not have had to deal with the BBC anymore...

Did the BBC not take on responsibility for the free over 75 licences when the government agreed to allow them to incorporate iplayer into the licence fee? If so, then they have back tracked on the agreement, maybe iplayer should now be removed from the licence requirement.

I will of course plead NOT GUILTY and say "but I'm over 75 your Honour and I'm on pension credits so I thought that at last I could watch TV". I would probably get found guilty but only get a slap on the wrist and I would of course get the local newspapers involved to highlight the total injustice of the BBC TV licence scam. @@byteme9718 The 'license fee model' does NOT allow you not to pay, not watching live TV and catch up etc allows you NOT to pay otherwise you are breaking the law, when we reach the point where enough people are not paying [which we are approaching] they will choose another option, possibly through advertising or as you say some sort of taxation, you do have to factor in though that BBC viewing numbers are greatly in decline, not just because the BBC has become so disliked but because of online streaming and Netflix etc etc etc etc, we may well see the BBC become self funding. It's all such a shame imo as the BBC 'should' be the pride of Britain but all this anti British stuff and anti Brexit and biased political stuff and 'woke' nonsense has been very very wrong for them, they have been very badly managed.

@@stevenhowe6677 It absolutely does allow you not to pay and leaves you the option by doing it legally by not watching/recording live broadcasts or illegally by breaking this law. They will not become a subscription service or show advertising so funding through general taxation would become necessary. It will never be able to fund itself and you highlight some of the reasons why. As bad as it is, the BBC is still better than the TV services is backward countries like the US.
