After nearly a year of trying I have just managed to persuade my employer (a small business owner) to cancel our office TV license. We have 2 big TVs on the wall that only show phone stats etc and he was staunchly of the opinion that we needed a TV license because of that. When I pointed out to him that we only needed to pay for a license if we watched live TV, he refused to believe me at first until I showed him this channel. He's been blindly paying it for years because he'd fallen for BBC & Capita's misinformation & false narratives.

Is a bit of a backlash from people who are paying for a licence. At the same time seeing people saying. I have not bought a license for years but it has not stopped my TV working. It’s obviously that as far as the license goes people can’t be trusted. Funding the National Broadcaster from tax would put a stop to the cheating.

I contacted the police to make a report of harassment against them after receiving 3 letters in one week after their system made a mistake (to which they admitted after the fact). The police told me that "This is not a police matter". I asked them if they were confirming that harassment is not a police matter and they could not answer. I asked them why it would be a police matter if I were to send 3 unwanted threatening letters to someone's address, and again they weren't prepared to answer. Insane.

They make you pay the entire licence in 6 months so the instalment is double, then it reduces to the normal rate so you remain 6 months ahead. This makes it much harder for people initially buying a licence, but it means a refund is due once you no longer need a licence as long as you inform TVL. Stopping your direct debit without telling them leaves you licenced for another 6 months with no refund.

@@pjcnetPeople have been caught out by obtaining a six month license arranging to pay by monthly instalments. Stopping payments after a couple of months does not cancel the license. Just leaves them in default on their credit payments.

We’re waiting for ours as well. They seem to go through a cycle. A red envelope, dire, then we’re opening an investigation, then threats, then almost begging well with the normal dire warnings. I suppose I should have kept some so see how many different one there are but unfortunately 'Shreddy' gets hungry and wants feeding. Main course and dessert as we get it in Welsh as well. I'm a postman and as well as receiving one of these letters myself I must of delivered hundreds and hundreds of these letters this week on my delivery, I was really surprised how many address no longer have a TV licence, more and more people are cancelling. And it's not just my delivery all the other postmen in my office were delivering hundreds of these letters, if I had to put an estimate on the amount we received in the office to deliver then it must be close to 30 thousand.

I always have a good laugh when I get their not so scary letters. I’ve given up watching television of any sort, I do sometimes watch You Tube stuff but most of its old stuff and none of its live. I don’t miss the news as I have a smart speaker so I can listen to that. The pizza menus and junk mail certainly make sure my shedder gets a balanced diet and the license letters are for deserts as it were. With winter not far away and the weather it brings let’s all endeavour to make sure the licensing folk get to enjoy wind and rain too, why should they miss out?

I informed them of my "no license needed" status, I genuinely do not need a license completely legitimately. I realised I hadn't needed one for years and wished I had dumped the license years ago. I still get the letters addressed to "The Occupier". The BBC are nothing short of gangsters . I do not like pizza, never have, "Dominoes" down the road do not send me threatening letters saying I have a pizza free home and must do something about it. I then got a letter with a massive envelope, I used said envelope and packaged all these 40 odd letters to my address and sent them all back to the tv licensing address in Darlington. Btw, look closely at the form you have to sign every 2 years to get them to stop pestering you. It requires a "declaration of truth". This is common law, and they can criminally put you away if what you declare is found out to be untrue, as it's perjury. Same thing on a tax return. This is why, in this case, I wouldn't even declare anything or sign that paper work. I do the same thing with SORN. In general, I declare the bare minimum possible with all government entities, except HMRC, because if you fail to file tax returns, they can make it very difficult for your legal person (fines etc) and will ultimately eject you from their society due to non-compliance.

@@TheOriginalCoda I'm the same sort off. I don't have a driveway or a garden to park on, so if my car isn't taxed, then I can't have it outside of my house on the road. But in reality, my house is up to the middle of the road albeit adopted by the council who then look after it. So if my car isn't taxed, I'm stuffed anyway. If your driving your car on the road untaxed, then you are committing an offence and you can be fined. So they are finding you guilty, before they have found you committing an offence???? I phoned them up to tell them I hadn’t been driving the car. They said it didn’t matter. All cars have to be insured unless they are SORN. I asked how I was meant to know about this new rule/law. They're quite correct, they CAN come around at any time, and be told to piss off. I actually make a non requirement declaration by email every two years and ignore the knock, which they still do occasionally. I don't use a tv or have a working aerial either. The cable for the old analogue one was cut off at above head height by yours truly, following vandalism to the lower end of it.

Hi Jon, Here is my tip for dealing with the BBC strategy of INTIMIDATION BY POST. DO NOT OPEN THE ENVELOPE. Put a line through your address on the envelope and mark it “ RETURN TO SENDER” then post it UNOPENED. The post office will return the letter to the return address on the back of the envelope. I get approx one letter a month and do the above with the envelope. If everyone does this, the whole strategy of sending intimidating letters fails as the BBC will know nobody reads them. As for the so called “enforcement officers” simply follow Jon’s advice: Say nothing and firmly close the door.

I do a return to sender every time, stating that there is no Mr L Occupier at this address. Blanking out the QR codes so they have to open the envelope to find who it was sent to. For this one I also write and you are G00N5 under the reference number in the window, also blacking out part of the logo on the envelope so it says TV Lice. For the envelope with the "we are opening an investigation" message in the window, I write more than you can say for this envelope under the window, before sending it back. If nothing else it must waste the Post Offices time and money, which will hopefully eventually lead to higher charges to the TV Lice.

Had a letter on an empty flat asking if I would be home on a certain date. I phoned them asking for a time so I wouldn’t miss them. After 3 different people I told them if they didn’t turn up on that date I would charge them for my time. They eventually admitted it was a general letter and they would not be round. If your home has a door entry system that you have to press the number of the property you want to access then just ask who they are then deny them access. Sometimes the goons press the number of other properties saying that they have a delivery for that address and they're not in and that person lets them in. In my property anyone can gain access from 07:00 to 12:30 but after that you have to press the number for the property you want. I'm awaiting my September threat O'gram, it normally arrives between the 27th of the month and the 7th of the following month

The other day I was thinking that I must be due yet another letter from TVL, I heard the Mail being pushed through the letter box. On inspection and to my disappointment nothing. The following day, deep joy, there it was. I immediately put it unopened in the pile with all the other unopened letters from DL98 1AT. If they want to check to see if I’m watching TV without a licence they will have to bring a set with them (or fix mine 🤣)

They use the threatening language because they're allowed to get away with it. It's time they were reined in, but don't expect the government to tighten the laws concerning such behaviour, and don't expect the police or courts to enforce the laws.

I had one of those recently. Like every other TV Fleecing envelopes that arrive in the post ; torned up and binned❗ 🧐 Also , if this so-called licence is only needed (allegedly) for watching live broadcasts , then 'Live TV Transmission' licence would be a more accurate term 🤔 ❗

The licence is also required for watching BBC iPlayer. Due to the terror laws your ISP is logging your online activity. Don’t forget a license may be needed to watching some live internet streaming.

I got an exemption a few years ago and then I went to renew it a couple of years ago and I answered the correct "no" to all of the questions and they told me that I still need to have a license! I have just ignored them ever since and the toilet paper keeps coming and the other day I got my first IN letter! Thanks for the reassurance.

I only watch ,youtube I've even stopped watching talk. TV and GB news.I'm getting threatening letters too. And have even had hand delivered, red form with Officers number In blue biro. You will just get an email asking you to basically buy a licence or renew your no licence status

Yup. Same here. Did the online thing, did get one visit shortly after, politely told him I didn't need a licence without lettinghim in, he said he'd update the system, and I've never heard another word since. I also moved house five months ago and still haven't had a visit or a letter. I get the point that I shouldn't have to ask not to be harassed, but doing the declaration online seems to work and I'd think it would be a lot less potentially frightening for people if more of them did likewise. Of course, it helps if you *genuinely* don't need a licence and aren't just avoiding paying what you rightfully should! Happily for me, there isn't even a TV in the house these days, so my conscience is clear and I'd even happily walk a goon through the house if he or she asked nicely. 😅

This is what they rely on - fear and ignorance. Please dont worry, they are just sales people selling licenses (on commission by the way!). If they call, open the door and say you're not interested and shut the door.... done!

Their latest ploy to those who say they don’t need a license, is to send an email, followed by a threatening letter, accusing you of watching BBC iPlayer. They say they have monitored online activity and it clearly shows I have watched BBC iPlayer, which I definitely have not!

They can't prove it really. The most they ask for is a postcode, which if you don't have a licence, you're hardly likely to be honest about that are you!

actually... tell a lie, if you've registered your iPlayer account with the same email you declared to TV licencing that you don't need a licence, they _can_ in theory apply an address to your iPlayer account and extrapolate from there.

I too play a straight game and don't watch or record any live broadcast TV on any channel and have un-installed BBC iPlayer on my TV. How is this harassment legal?

Ditto. The harassing letters began a couple of months after my declaration and refund. They appear every month since. Obviously I ignore them as I watch no tv nor iPlayer. The waste concerns me tho. Think I’ll need to return to sender to see if they get the correct message?
