Lucian was a real master of singing in speech rhythm. Exeter's recordings are a joy to listen to, especially the Psalms. So many choirs let themselves down by dull, laboured psalm singing - including some of our alleged "Premier League" establishments.

Lovely singing. Shame about the rather brutal editing which cut out the lessons. Not the Archive's doing, I'm sure! I'm always a bit sad when lessons and prayers are edited out, as they add the prayerful context for the music. Without them it is just a concert.

Back in the day it was the only way to get a full choral evensong on a 45 min side of cassette tape, the 60 min ones stretched and didn't last over time!

@@petersumner7367 Ah, that would make sense. It would explain the bursts of unrelated music at the editing points. Clearly the tape was being recycled :-)

We never edit out the lessons but as Peter says, it was because of the length of the tape. Most choral evensongs which are donated on cassette have the lessons cut out.
