Done the low level throwing it about with Andy Rands. It is brilliant. Funny when you look up and see people looking down into the cockpit.

Bobybot Alas few expect better of the BBC now. I've come here looking for an old series from the BBC on fast jet training. Provosts, not sure if Gnats or Hawks but Hunters, Jaguars and Lightnings. No not the new Lightning but still the fastest aircraft the RAF ever had. Trying to find out if I was just younger then or if the BBC were also less wrong then.

speak thetruth get it right the hawk is capable of Mach 1.2 in a dive
@mrmrs39677 жыл бұрын
I think your being slightly misleading. A stone could do mach1.2 if it has enough momentum to begin with. The fact is BAE doesnt recommend exceeding the aircrafts designed limits and i seriously doubt any RAF pilot which this program is about has ever broke the sound barrier in a hawk.
@sixbells997 жыл бұрын
From Wiki "The Hawk was designed to be maneuverable and can reach Mach 0.88 in level flight and Mach 1.15 in a dive, thus allowing trainees to experience transonic flight before advancing to a supersonic trainer" This makes sense the HAWK was designed for training fast jet pilots by keeping it subsonic in level but allowing students to understand transonic flight they get to learn both elements of fast jets, while at the same time keeping the costs down of the jet, which would be higher if it was a real supersonic trainer.
@PK-bn9rc6 жыл бұрын
The hawk was designed as a subsonic trainer but used to be cleared to supersonic speeds. To go supersonic it needed to be in a dive and at high altitude. The aircraft is now getting old so is no longer cleared to go super sonic.

True. In WW2 they aimed to make RAF Uniform easily convertible to civilian clothes. Not as much difference back then I guess. Stick on a hi-vis over your growbag and boots and you might pass as a bloke on the way home from work

13:20 arrogance from an elderly navigator. Good luck with that attitude when he's applying to be an airline pilot. If he was in the right seat flying next to me, he'd not enjoy it much.

Wow, the arrogance of the guy at 13:20 is incredible. Calling an airline pilot who are often ex RAF 'cab drivers'. I guess these videos were taken in a different epoch, despite only being filmed a few decades ago. I see his ambition but for God's sake; some thoughts should be kept to one's self.
@davidhumphreys70352 жыл бұрын
I knew an airline pilot who called himself an overpaid bus driver, i think an RAF Fast Jet pilot has earned the right to call an airline pilot who let's face does nothing more than transport people or cargo from A to B, the time they earn their money is when the wheel comes off.
@n1msu2 жыл бұрын
@@davidhumphreys7035 yeah but is he a fast jet pilot? If he got his wings then fair enough; I've not seen the end of the series, but as of watching he's just a trainee

@@n1msu yes he got his wings, in those days they got them at Linton on Tucanos, they're actually wearing them on arrival at 208 when they're wearing their best blue.
@paulward4268 Жыл бұрын
Dave McBryde had already been a Tornado Backseater for 18 years, and took part in the 1991 Gulf War lomg before this. So in his highly experienced eyes, he knew what he was talking about. Compared to fast jet flying, airline work IS cab driving.
@n1msu Жыл бұрын
@@paulward4268 As I said, filmed in a different time. What you're stating isn't anything new to me. Does that mean somebody who flies internationally every year is qualified to fly an airliner? Or somebody who sat in the front seat of a car/cab as a 5 year old until they're 16 (if they were fortunate enough to have a parent drive them to school and back every day). Does this mean the child is able to drive? I couldn't drive a car when I first had lessons at 17. I could go on. There is confidence and then there is arrogance/hubris.

the 38 year old nav was talking shit about airline pilots .. but he is not a pilot , that's precious. And if he ends up in a C-130 what then? since airline pilots are cab drivers what does that make him?
@redbaron90292 жыл бұрын
Truck driver perhaps.
@paulward4268 Жыл бұрын
That Nav had 18 years of combat experience behind him, including Gulf War time. So when he made that comment - so he most certainly knew what he was talking about. Compaeed to fast jet flying -airline work IS cab driving. ( And I know that because I worked for BA for 31 years).

I like to think of myself as a modern thinking, mostly politically correct, non misogynistic, equal opportunities for all, type of guy. Really, I do. But when I hear a woman narrating this type of program it just doesn´t sit well with my ears.
@colin5577 Жыл бұрын
They’re not all female, black or trans recruits. And it’s in colour. So I know it’s later than the fifties, but Jennifer Lawrence isn’t in it and she was the first woman combat pilot ever, so it can’t be more recent than Hunger Games. Gosh… dating this is tricky.
