And the problem is they are right, they don't have to compete. It doesn't matter whether Gary Lineker or Doug from down the pub presents Match of the Day, the BBC still get £3.5 billion .So, why do they insist they have to pay to get the "talent" to present the programmes when it doesn't matter. If the programme is good, people will watch, but it doesn't have to draw the audiences. Independent TV do have to produce high quality programming as their income depends on it; no viewers equals no advertisers equals no money. The BBC don't have that requirement, they could produce 5 channels of absolute garbage 24 hours a day 7 days a week, and would still get paid. In fact, if you want to watch ANY live TV on any channel, and never watch any BBC output, you still have to pay the BBC. That is iniquitous.

@@MikeEves We don't want to lose the right of at least being able to choose. If it's added as a media tax then you won't be-able to use a broadband service at all without paying the BBC. If it's added to council tax which I think is more likely, then you'll have the full might of enforcement and bailiffs if you don't pay, if you're on benefits it will ultimately just get removed anyway or via an attachment to earnings. The other nasty option is a media licence which means you'd be breaking their new law if you watched anything on demand or KZbin or even downloaded a movie to watch, this would make enforcement very easy for Capita since virtually every household would need one and they'd probably get access to ISP information. Just defunding the BBC forcing them to compete isn't something I believe the government is truly considering.

I was always a licence fee payer and enjoyed paying for something I wanted to watch, but I watch KZbin, amazon prime, Netflix and rarely watch normal channels like BBC or other terrestrial channels, so 2023 was first year ever I never renewed my licence as I don't see the point to pay for something I don't watch, and I like watching sport like snooker etc, but I don't have to watch live coverage, I can catch up later...makes no odds lol. But I don't see how £159 is money well spent... its not in my book. Nice upload mate... hopefully someone from the BBC sees your channel and passes the word round and see how much everyone is united in not paying for a bloody TV licence.

Hi Jon,I got rid of my TV around 8 years ago, for various reasons; i.e. I don't like paying wages to sex offenders, perverts, narcissists and ego-maniacs or more recently, BBC newsreaders who flip the bird at viewers. I got a stack of harassing letters, all slightly different and in creative colouring promising me a visit from a jobsworth. I made sure to have plenty of teabags and biscuits in stock because I was looking forward to a chat, not having a TV means I thrive on connection with other people from all walks of life, even the mentally challenged. I spoke to a Licensing representative over the phone a few years ago, he was so interested in my life I was astonished. He wanted to know what I do with my evenings as I don't have an idiot box. I told him all about my hobbies and he got a bit bored. Maybe he should get a job he enjoys? Every year I have to ring them up and say I don't have a TV. But it's a bit easier now as it's multiple choice and you don't have to speak to anyone. I encourage anyone who reads this to get rid of your TV and start enjoying your life instead. I've had no TV since 2009. No licence, no TV, no satellite or cable or subscriptions; I've got no interest whatsoever in the BBC or ITV or Sky or any other broadcaster. I haven't seen a news bulletin or a newspaper for almost twenty years. I don't care what's going on in the world; I withdrew from the whole sorry, miserable mess and haven't missed it one little bit. I don't even have a mobile phone. I live very simply in West Yorkshire on a tiny income of around £1,000 [yes, that's one-thousand quid] per year. I haven't minded filling in the 'no TV licence required' declaration form every few years as requested. The Licence Fee department hasn't bothered me; I've had no threats or angry letters or visits or investigations. Meanwhile, I have hobbies. I build things. I grow veggies. I read books. I write. I paint. I'm a musician (of sorts) and compose, record and produce at home (it's done through headphones, so my neighbours don't hear a thing). I don't watch live TV, at all. I watch KZbin videos on a cheapo tablet. If the traditional TV licence fee is abolished, there is absolutely no way that I'll be forced into paying any kind of blanket 'media tax', however they try to hide and impose it. I will not support a TV network that has nothing to do with me. Likewise, I won't be paying my neighbour's car insurance, nor shall I buy a fishing licence for the friendly but slightly bonkers carp fanatic who lives across the road. If there's any attempt to sneak a media component onto the Council Tax, I'll cancel my Direct Debit and go back to paying by cheque so that I can remove the media element and only pay the rest. I loathe what the BBC has become and want nothing more to do with it. Auntie Beeb won't get another penny out of me, ever. Like a lot of people, I've been pushed around quite a bit in life; taking control 15 years ago was the best thing I've ever done. Anyone who thinks I'll meekly pay for something that I don't want and don't like and don't use is going to have a very messy fight on their hands.

I wish someone with money would send letters out to every house hold explaining the rules, law and why you don't need a licence, because there's still people out there who are unaware and are just paying out of fear. As a postman im delivering hundreds & hundreds of threatening TV licence letters every month on my round and all my colleagues are noticing the number of TV licence letters are going up. We are sick to death of delivering them and don't want to deliver them but unfortunately we have no choice, but if someone was to send thousands of letters out explaining how not to pay it and why you don't have to pay it then I will gladly deliver these letters just to get the message across to people.

I stopped my TV Licence in 2002, long before it was a discussion point. At the time I had to get my MP, Sir Micheal Spicer, to write to TV Licensing to stop them bullying me with threats. It worked and I think they regard me as being not requiring a TV Licence to this day. I love it when I visit friends who still have functioning live TV, and, if the BBC TV service no longer appealed to me twenty-one years ago, it simply horrifies me now! I still listen to Radio Three, but I accept that this old school service must be on borrowed time. Nowadays you can get all the music you want on the internet in any case. But I do enjoy R3 on VHF with a fully restored 1957 Leak tuner and Quad amp and speaker. [Amp from 1999 and speaker also from 1957]. What I particularly don't understand is why the Licence Fee should finance the BBC World Service, which is merely an arm of the UK government foreign office propaganda department, and nobody takes this seriously nowadays. The days of 1939 - 45, when people secretly listen to the BBC in Nazi occupied Europe are generations ago. I would stop the World Service tomorrow as funded. If the Foreign Office want to devote some of their propaganda money to continuing the service that would be an election issue to be decided in political manifesto policy commitments and elections. Stopped watching BBC TV about 20 years ago and, for the radio, it’s even longer - stopped listening to BBC Radio way back in 1974 when my area got its first commercial radio station. *The BBC radio listening figures dropped by about 70% and they were whining about it even back then.* They’ve never recovered.

Which is exactly why they don't want to give people that choice, and instead they levy what amounts to a "tax" on everyone who watches any TV channel, even if it's never the BBC. Because it's the only way they can get paid to make programmes that nobody wants to watch. It's an absolute racket.

The BBC is already closing local radio stations. I work for a charity in Merseyside, and Roger Lyon is a patron. He was recently let go from the BBC, as they're only having like 3 local programmes and the rest are now just national services. Losing more listeners in the process. So regardless of the change for "subscription" instead of the license, it wouldn't change for radios anymore.

I cancelled my TV Licence 2 years ago. My husband and I watch Netflix in the evening for a couple of hours. When I am visiting my Mothers in a residential home which has a communal TV Licence I see what she watches and it is all the old repeats of Emmerdale, Coronation Street and Heartbeat. Out of interest I had a look at the television magazine and out of a whole days viewing there were only 5 things that did not have the R for repeat after them. I totally agree with you that the BBC has gone stale and they do not try to better themselves because they are guaranteed the money.

The ad industry follows numbers, and if the BBC make good programmes, they will attract ever growing viewing figures, which in turn will attract advertising revenue, but if they don’t, they won’t. It's not rocket science. Competition is good someone should try telling that to the BBC then maybe they would up their game now in preparation for the inevitable. As for Lineker he was or is still the unofficial, official voice off the BBC, it's just that they know that if they admit to it, they would be in breach of the royal charter, hence the reason why he's still allowed to post on social media at will.

My biggest fear is that, with the more people choosing not to pay, is them implementing this 'media tax' type of thing which you mention at the end of this video. If they force us to do this then it officially becomes the state broadcaster and I would argue that they are then only allowed to broadcast factual information, something they're not currently very good at.

I can understand the argument regarding advertising and it'll cause a big upset in the TV industry if they were instantly allowed to advertise... however this wouldn't be such a problem if they didn't make such a protected giant in the first place! I think they should start experimenting with it. Freeze the licence fee, and allow the BBC to only show X many adverts. The next year if it has worked, reduce the licence fee and allow more adverts; then do more after that.

I've just done my no licence declaration today. I don't have a problem spending 5 minutes on the blower every couple of years to (very politely) tell them I don't need a licence. Been doing it for 8 years now, never had a problem, never had the letters every few months and I've never had a knock on the door. Today was a bit different though. My god, the agent WOULD NOT shut up about just how 'wonderful' iPlayer is. I have honestly had car salesmen apply less pressure to try and get a sale than this bellend did today! I had to tell him at least half a dozen times that there is literally NOTHING the BBC has to offer that I'm interested in, even if it was free. He wouldn't give it a rest until telling him (not so politely this time) that I didn't appreciate him trying to pressure me into paying for something that I neither want nor watch, especially since I've already declared this to be the case. What has always been a very easy, very quick and very amicable phonecall in the past seems to have turned into a pretty desperate, hard sales opportunity for them now.
