Yes she certainly is. Put HERSELF on the RIGHT track. Even went to open a SAVINGS account. Good on SHELBY! & she worked. I was thinking, keep up on that track and your thinking & planning. If you continue on that stocking job, keep going from there, It is something to put ob a cv for future jobs. Then get back to school & keep working and saving as you continue your education. Soon you will be MILES ahead from where you came from.

My mother was kicked out for being pregnant at 15. Had two children by 21, was divorced by 22, worked 3 jobs full time and was a single mom full time, she's now a nurse practitioner and through her raising me and pounding education and work ethic into my head I am a DVM. It can be done. It is not easy, but it is possible. Do it for your unborn child.

I'm always amazed at the care free attitudes of young people in these videos, when they get arrested, jailed and go to court. They don't seem bothered by it and many laugh and joke around. My oldest son had gotten into trouble with the law once. I told him he's on his own. I made him pay restitution for his vandalism with his college savings (it took every penny). When he was let out of jail at 3 in the morning I told him he could walk home in the cold, barefoot, he did just that and it was a couple of miles. I call it tough love. He now has a good job, successful and we are very close. He told me many times that I did the right thing because it opened his eyes. I love him with my whole heart!

the fact that the 17 year old from Glasgow is getting just 250 a month for working 30 hours a week is shocking. just a way for company's to get cheap labour. this "placement" is no different than a job. they need this work done right? give her the job then not a "placement" that gives the poor girl barely enough to survive on.

Not sure how "placements" work in the UK but it seems similar to what we call "Temporary". Temp or Temporary workers usually go through an agency for when companies only need extra help for a short period of time. Companies don't want all the hassle with hiring an individual for temp work so they hire the temp agency instead. The temp agency does all the tax work, paper work and determine which people are best suited for the type of work a company wants. The temp agency then takes a percentage of the workers wages. There are also laws which differ between states that give temp workers certain benefits "IF" they work a specified number of hours.

My mom was raised in a house with no running water or electricity...with abusing parents and stuff. Her grandmother helped my mother and her sister but she left her family at 14 and went to a boarding school. She told many sad stories and I'm really proud of her that despite of the circumstances she is where she is now. Also I'm really thankful that she broke out of her situation and did her best to provide me a better life.

Lucky? Have you learned the kind of skills involved here? Very few people get to retire at 17 at public expense and their vices intact. The key in most Western countries is having enough children to maximize qualification while not getting so slovenly that the children get taken into care so the qualifications are lost. You probably didn't have an upbringing that gave you this particular skill set and your retirement age is probably much older as a result even if it's in a richer environment. (The exception and good argument for a public investment was Shelby prior to her pregnancy.)

Bridie admitted she would laugh at people who wanted to be successful, then assumes they’d be laughing at her for sticking with her plan to live on 100 pound a week. But she didnt take into account the probability that those success seekers came from stable homes with loving supportive families who would help them succeed so they wouldnt have to struggle, unlike her parents who denied her the basics and left her to it. Please people, take care of your babies!!

I really admire Shelby in this documentary, I feel like she's really trying to make the best out of a really really crappy situation, she's literally working slave labor, with seemingly no family or friend supports. Heartbreaking to read at the end that she was pregnant. That's pretty much going to condemn her to a life of poverty forever. She seemed to have good instincts on turning things around, but with a documentary they create narratives based on overall footage. Clearly, there was a recklessness about Shelby that we didn't get to see among all the budget calculations and shopping lists.

I'm actually so hurt to see all the judgemental people in the comments judging them. Don't you know this kinda thing can happen to anyone? Granted some of them don't seem motivated to change their situation, but even the sweetest and most gracious of people lose their jobs and or face a serious struggle. Poverty has no name, it can happen to anyone. These series make me so grateful for my life. I suffer from GAD (anxiety) and I literally save at least 50% of my income so I can avoid this kind of struggle. People judge me but it brings me comfort to know I have well over 10K for emergencies. It eases my anxiety because my biggest fear is being homeless. I do believe some of these girls need a wake up call and need to do better. Being young is not an excuse cause I'm young too (22) and I started saving from 17. Partying with friends and blowing your money on alcohol, drugs and junk is not gonna bring you financial security. I do feel so sorry for them though 😔

Three cheers for Shelby. She will make it. A lot of people are born poor, or have things in life happen that put them in very bad situations. Often behaviors and choices make things worse. There is no free ticket. Shelby has the mind, gumption and tenacity to pull herself out of this situation. I loved seeing her budget things out, I've been there. Before you attack me, I would know. At our low point my family was homeless in the USA. I now write this 25 years later with an MBA I paid for myself, a cute little house that I bought alone, a newer car (house and car are my only debts) some money in the bank and a retirement nest egg started. Yes for my age I am behind many of my peers, but other than moral support from my mom, I did this on my own. I wish I could find my Shelby. We would both enjoy the fruits of our hard labor and our modest blessings.

A Mc first of all contraception for woman is expensive, it’s not readily available like condoms are. And yes woman should insist on condoms being worn but often men can make you feel pressured or intimidated if you try to say no. Lastly regardless of who’s fault it is, the man helped make a life and should be there. It’s fucking disgusting how many men choose not to have anything to do with their children. Ultimately if you’re not prepared to take care of a baby then use contraception or accept the consequences of your actions. Don’t just point the finger at the woman and use abortion or weak ass arguments like that as an excuse to be a piece of shit. Men aren’t a meal ticket either because most of the cunts aren’t even in the picture which is the whole point. I don’t think you know what your on about talking about double standards and equality. It’s the woman that gets lumped with the kid and the cost. Where’s the fucking equality and double standard there you prick

Being on benefits is bloody hard, as someone who has been there myself I understand the situation people can sometimes get into through no fault of their own. I don't agree with the smoking when pregnant at all but I can see why poor people smoke from the stress of it all. I've been through all that these girls have and I now live in a 4bedroom detached house and have a good job. It wasn't easy getting here but with lots of determination I finally got there. At one point I thought I'd be dead by the age of 30 through drink and depression, I tried to take my own life many times. I now hardly drink and don't smoke. I was a single teen mother worked for below minimum wage (apprentice wage) to support us. I’ve worked my ass off, with most of my pay always eaten by childcare, rent & bills but I’d rather do that all over again then live on the dole. At one stage I remember the job centre said to me I should quit my apprenticeship and just collect benefits, as they were more than my job brought in. I refused and struggled through it. 10 years later I’m now on a very good wage, live in a lovely home and I regret nothing. I can tell you now from experience what Shelby is doing will work out in the long run. Working for your money, even if it’s sometimes less than benefits give is always the best choice. It’s so easy to fall into the benefits system, to rely on it and choose it as the ‘easy option’. Benefits should always be temporary to help through hard times, never a life choice. I really wish Shelby the best... She’s working hard and eventually that will pay off! 💪🏻

Some folk can't help but judge people, thers no enough empathy or understanding to people out ther struggling, everyone has a story dont look down on people's path in life just cos yours has been easier, it can all change in a heartbeat and you could be that person,we all need to be humble to remember us we all make mistakes help people don't ever think your better than someone we all need to pass on the help we all have to give 👍

Yep. She looks in her 50s at least. It's not because she had a baby. Tonnes of women have multiple kids and still look fantastic. I'd put it down primarily to a lifetime of very poor nutrition, processed food, probably alot of alcohol and smoking too. People often overlook the impact of diet on the psychology and physicality of poor people in our society. I honestly believe if more was done to inform and support these communities in terms of providing people with better nutrition and fitness regimes, there would be a marked improvement in how they look and behave. It's not all about money, it's about knowledge. You can eat very healthy whole food diets on low budget. A single meal from McDonalds costs more than 2 / 3 days worth of proper food.

I was chain smoking for years and when I found out I was pregnant I quit cold turkey, was the best choice I made. It is selfish to smoke whatever excuse you make when you are pregnant. It shouldnt be a hard choice when you have a baby especially 'wanting to give the baby a good start' being healthy is a good start.

UK gives so many good free opportunities to people for e'g free schooling and benefits. Back in my country we have to pay for the school, low income, no benefit. We have to earn money from working even though the income are very low. People living in Britain are very lucky, take that as a opportunity to build your own life by going to school and get job as theres hundreds of job out there.

I'm not sure where lunar is from but in Africa they pay for school right from the beginning to end. In America we pay registration fees starting in some public high schools. Not to mention private schools which cost regardless of the grade.

The system was originally supposed to help people that worked. Elderly and disabled were to reap the benefits of taxes. Social Security to take care of yourself after retirement. Modifications to the system to help the impoverished came later. Of course there will always be people who abuse the system where they can.

Lunar Rae I can see what you are saying but the problem is that if both your parents quit school and you see all your friends drop out of school, when your young you don't think about the future you just think about what's fun so why would you stay in school when you hate it and your family doesn't care if you get and education?

Bridie just need to outgrow that "trying to be cool" phase in life and direct her energy somewhere else productive. That rebellious and nonchalant attitude that got her into trouble is exactly what is needed to rise above everyone else.

That work scheme that Shelby is on is a joke. You here politicians and business people endorsing the idea, saying that it gives valuable work experience to the unemployed. What it actually does is provide businesses with free labour. What people like Shelby need is a job. Instead of taking the piss and paying her £55 for 30 hours work which equals less than £2 an hour, pay her a proper and fair hourly rate for that type of work which is around £6ish. But no, as soon as the shop had taken advantage of all that free labour (because the government pay the £55, not the shop) they essentially tell her to fuck off. I've always been lucky with work and have been employed every year since I was 16. I'm 28 now. However., I have always been paid at least the minimum wage. If someone tried to get me to work for £55 for 30 hours work, I would have felt very angry and exploited.

Blade Blunter I agree that the schemes aren't much good to those going on them, but remember she wasn't just getting $55 a week, she was also getting her rent and council tax paid, which all together equals more than minimum pay.

Blade Blunter 17 year old do not need to be paid as much as an adult because they do not have the same bills as an adult. They're usually either living with their parents or in some kind of hostel (in Shelbys case) because it's not legal for a 17 year old to sign a contract to live in their own flat. If people like Shelby dont wanna be treated like a slave then she should go back to further education like she's supposed to.

I was an apprentice in London earning £30 a day (about £3.50/hr), I was paying full fares on the trains and tubes, I thought that was bad, now I feel for her, earning £55 for 30 hours work!

Shelby is a lovely girl and needs assistance and help, as she is working and being treated as a slave of the government.. Poor gal is working and trying to help herself but being pushed down, she has a brain and not going out getting pissed or on drugs like the majority of them. God bless her... She will be good and will grow strong. Love to know her updates after 6 yrs have passed since this video was uploaded..

2012 was a brutal time….At least financially for me! I was 18 and fresh out of the care system…..and no family who gave a toss. I was barely an adult and all alone. On the other side of that now……(Thankfully) it is doable but it takes a hell of a lot of work. I hope these girls are in a better position today ❤
