Nobody makes documentaries like the BBC. No ‘manufactured’ dramas, no “If they don’t get the tents up in ten minutes, they’ll DIE !!!!!” Just allowing the subject to tell the tale. The unique way in which the BBC works, and is funded, results in these kind of docs. Superior production values, letting the filmmakers tell the whole story, almost regardless of cost. Their worldwide reputation and network of experts are the envy of the world. Nothing opens doors like the words, “I’m from the BBC”. Nobody else can afford to take years making a single program. It’s just not cost effective. That’s why I pay my licence fee with a smile on my face.

Eating the reindeer meat fresh from the kill is actually quite a clever way to conserve energy. No need to thaw it in the mouth or gut and waste your bodies energy. No need to waste scarce fuel to cook it on the stove. The Nenets are masters at surviving in their homeland. All credit to them.

I am just at the very beginning of this video. And that part when Nenet people talked about the reasons why they have to work here. I broke out into tears. I really feel for them. I have been really interested in cultures recently, have been thinking about these places like this, where are considered to be ... "poor". But now this changed my mind. The old knowledge of the indigenous peoples is extremely valuable because it enabled them to live happily for thousands of years. I am a White Guy in Canada but I have learned some of the indigenous knowledge. There is much more to it than most people know. I also have a degree in Engineering and, philosophically, I see no conflict between the old knowledge and the Science. It's all part of the same Universe, the Universe where we all live. Nancy Baldwin I love these types of docs because it gives you a glimpse of how different cultures live even in the toughest conditions. It is quite admirable to say the least, and I for one cannot help to feel nothing but respect for these folks, but to say they live better than “us” or then other cultures is a little a unfair if not self-righteous. I have been fascinated by the reindeer peoples all my life and have read all National Geographic had to offer as a child,,,so this continues my wonderful exploration and I will share it with my grandchildren today. We are mixed blood people in North America and ancestors were nomadic tribes of the northern plains, so we hold dear to our hearts the old ways and love to learn there are people who still live the old ways in this modern world. I am so happy to have found your channel and look forward to following your travels. Thank you! I am from the United States and see the correlation when our first railroads moved from the east coast to the west coast. I can see the pros and cons. Why not find a way to feed the reindeer as we feed our cattle in the winter. Then they can still have their way of life but can do as we do now with reindeer ranches. Remember we used to move our cattle great distances. There has to be a way to do this. Then they will not have to send their children off to boarding schools but can have schools in their community because they no longer have to migrate. They can still maintain their culture but will not have to move their herds but can ranch their herds. Anybody else have any ideas?

I actually thought the Russian gas manager who visited the family was being quite honest. He said blatantly, industry destroys, not builds. If this took place somewhere in th West, you would definately not get a straight answer. Look at what the US government is doing in Flint , Michigan with the water supply issue. Or the fracking issue in US. Or the pipline Dakota Access Pipeline issue. The US government are running roughshod over their own people. They may do the same in Russia... but I dont think theiir spin and lies are worse than the West's spin and lies.

Charlie Charalambous your comment is right, about US. I live in US, and all those things mentioned are not well liked by all. We have lived in a Democrat run nation, far too long and much damage was done all over our Country. Most people are hoping that President Trump can straighten out this mess that was made, but he too is having to be up against the Democrats in office. He has made some great changes, but there has been so much corruption going on, it’s going to take more than just a 4 year term to get more done. Americans want him to once again be our President for another term, but time will tell. The Democrats are continuing on, with causing all Americans and America trouble. I have also seen all three episodes and I feel Kate and the team have done an Great job. Her stile is engaging, and she neither judges nor exploits the people she works with. She gets a bit emotional at times but doesn't go out of her way to over dramatize these people's lives. Excellent.

For thousands of years nomads like African nomads,Persian nomads,Indian nomads,Kazakh nomads,Turkish nomads,Norwegian nomads,Moroccan nomads,Mongolian nomads,Eskimos etc etc are surviving and thriving to this day without any religion nor education nor with any technology.... They get the best food to eat,they don't have shit to worry about....they live with the least principle yet they are morally and spiritually far more superior then anyone....they always live happily and die peacefully....

The lady makes such a beautiful clothes despite of not doing any dress designing courses. I liked the long skirt she made for Kate in which cutting, stitching and design was so beautiful. Hand made coats are priceless. They will cost u fortune if it was sold in the country like US or any other country but they are not allowed to sell animal fur clothes which I can totally understand. Hats off to u talented and beautiful lady.

Than you so much Kate and your team for exploring the world and share with us your expedition. I have learned so much from your travels about different cultures that the schools can’t even teaching my children. I too came from a third world country but grew up with a gold spoon. I have only visited my native home land once and that was only to bury my brother (2 years ago). I appreciate every culture and traditions and couldn’t wait to implement their simple way of living. They are the most realistic people and truly respect them for the life they live. I Look forward to watch more of your educational videos :)

The whole place has its own special magic, and life seems wonderfully peaceful and fulfilling despite its simplicity. Makes you feel like spending a couple of weeks in the tundra. She criticizes Gazprom for disturbing the nomadic way of life, but changes are unavoidable, and the Nenets seem to adapt well, because they use mobile phones now. She shouldn't criticize Gazprom. Instead she should remember how the British destroyed the North American indians' way of life when they colonized USA and Canada without any respect or consideration.

I thought so too - he was very honest infact and answered all her questions, including the compensation question. Otherwise the rest of the documentary is very good. I think maybe BBC, not Kate, is disappointed that Gazprom is so respectful to the people of Siberia because the English would never have given these people a cent

there are some problems with it they are free of all taxes and goverment pays them money if they live in traditional way, because it`s not very profitable but they still want to have modern goods. and there comes a problem - the most passionate ones are going to cities (like everywhere in the world) to have a nice salary, least active part just imitate traditional live to have subsidies from goverment, and only part of them really live this way (it is really hard and brings very high pre-historical risks) may be the biggest problem - they are very vulnerable to alcohol (the same level like heroin for others) due to their genes

Those people get the same education as any russians, their children leave tribe at the age 7 and live in a boarding school in the city. Most boys get 9 years of school, some quit earlier. Most girls finish all 11 years (mandatory in Russia is 9). People who live in tundra have cellphones, satellite TV, satellite phones and they are regularly paid visits by doctors who fly in by helicopter, also if they have a critical medical situation they can also call a helicopter, it is free for them. And they actually have enough money, they just choose this lifestyle.

Watched the whole film-documentary. Nice footages, interesting view inside the life of this people. Very good at explaining some problematic situation and controversy. Very much lack of information about the real daily life. How the relation, coordination and logistic are held. Nothing about social and political organizacion, since they, despite being nomads, have to be in constant coordination with another nomad... where do they bury their relatives, what are their cultural tratiditions; nothing about their language, their music, their handwork (just a few images and nonsese talking), what are their believes, it was merely a turistic travel of a very rich girl... strong and very nice one by the way. thank you.

She spent one , ONE week with them. You expect them to marry and kill someone so you can see music, weddings and burials ?? It was about one week of day to day life, not comprehensive documentary. Music, language, political situation can be easily found online, all that info is out there. Ironically it seem like touristic travel video is something you would actually prefer.
@AG-ig8uf

@anonymous It is ONE ordinary week from life of those people, not detailed documentary. Title and descriptions make it clear. Unfortunately westerners are too used to staged mocumentaries, with natives in most exotic outfits doing all kinds of social activities, from weddings to funerals and everything else, "coincidentally" when documentary was filmed. This episode has VERY telling part when russian Gasprom manager "visits" natives, from food on the table, to his entourage attitude, it tells a lot to those who can see.

@anonymous "if they really cared for the nenets they would be helping them to go through the court system against the oil companies." Assuming in good faith that you are not trolling, but just ignorant and naive, this is Russia and Gazprom we talking about! Get some reality check.
@AG-ig8uf
@AG-ig8uf 4 жыл бұрын
@anonymous How does Monsanto being sued has anything to do with this video? With Russia or Gazprom ? You made no points and no sense. Gazprom been destroying native habitats for ages now, European governments been riding Putins dick for years too, Germany being the leader, for natural gas supply, and would never do anything to jeopardize it. They would never engage in any legal battle with Gazprom, as "green" economy policies made them extremely depended on Russian gas. Monsanto was American company designated by "organic" mongrels as evil, and despite all studies and scientific evidence pointing to glyphosate not being carcinogenic, still got sued and convicted by clueless jury. Just shows how dumb and brain washed western society became, ignore well known and ubiquitous carcinogens like nitrites in food, alcohol, and even organic produce having much higher levels of aflatoxins, instead blindly attack some red herring company.

I enjoyed seeing how these people live, and even more so, that this lady was able to participate in their daily life, and they look like they are of Chinese ancestry, as also their lifestyle is also that of Native Americans and other natives worldwide, in which they respect the nature and the oneness of the animals they come in contact with, and I also notice how their customs are that of which God speaks of in the Torah of how men and women are different and notice how they have a custom of the female that enters into menstrual cycles , even after centuries of separation from their tribal origins
