Watch and react to the whole series. It's a good one. I've watched it several times over the years. Over 25,000,000 Indians volunteered, but the British took only 10% of them. There was some concern that training and arming that many Indians might be an issue for the British after the war. If you remember the speech Dr, Shashi Tharoor gave about reparations at the Oxford Union, he broke down how many men, and how much money and supplies India gave to the British war effort. To this day, the British government has not built a single monument to the Indian soldiers who served to protect Britain. My own grandfather and his cousins and his brother-in-law all served in WWII (as did other family members during WWI) in France, North Africa, Mesopotamia (now Iraq), and Burma. This series, and others, are a way to learn a bit about those family members' wartime lives, since they had all passed away before I was born.

Your reactions to the videos are most wellcome. The Indian Army today, as of old is a voluntary professional force, with a proud tradition going back centuries. The battle honours of regiments include those engagements which were fought during British rule. Britain lost her world power status, after losing India , and the Indian Army.

Obviously British BBC would certainly undermine the misconduct and discrimination by them in these videos but yes watch rest of them as well. And Churchill could be your War Hero against Nazi but he was Hitler for us Indians. There are actual quotes of him which was so hateful that you have to wonder why he hated us so much. My great granddad ended up serving in Malaya. And that's how my family started here in Singapore and Malaysia and Thailand. After he passed, my great-grandma promptly, and enrolled in the Jansi regiment, following Bhagat Singh's call to war, and eventually rose to the rank of Major in the medical corp. She recruited my entire family, including my mom and her kids. Family gatherings were armed to the teeth. Growing up was weird.

I do hope India does not forget the diaspora that spread to South east asia, as a direct outcome of the war effort. So far, we have not heard from the indian leadership. When they are ready, there are war memorials here filled with Indian soliders. When someone in Delhi is ready, they are welcome to lay some flowers.

It's sad even after this documentary and all the recognition, the Europeans and their media choose to ignore and treat us Indians like second class citizens of the world. They always forget that they won the WW2 because Indians fought their war for them expecting to get freedom from British rule which was a false promise. They even built statues for dogs who participated in the war and they still don't know the names or the exact number of Indians who lost their lives or Indians who captured as pow .

14:05 I'm not sure where everyone is getting this notion from, 1.) A Japanese/German alliance only worked on paper, never did the two actually fight for one another, in fact the Germans were training Chinese soldiers in the 30's. 2.) the allies were always destined to win, the Manhattan project was always going to decide the power battle and Hitler wasn't actively researching a nuclear program, and thirdly this was a war of attrition, Germany was running out of men and resources as was japan. There is no evidence to suggest India being defeated would have done anything more than delay the inevitable out come of the war.

Apart from just sending volunteers for the war, India contributed in many other ways. India supplied food grains, livestock, clothes, rubber, manufactured ammunition, military equipment, and even aircrafts. Out of the total Britain war debt, around 60% was owed to India and never really paid back. If you adjust the amount to inflation, in today's value the amount would run into billions of dollars.
