The Distaste the GHQ hated the SAS were for the very reasons Paddy Mayne stated. They could and often did operate without direct orders. It was also the same things that was hated by the first formations of Green Berets. The first groups looked like a Rogues Gallery of misfits and casts off from every European Army post WWII, and that is doing those men a great disservice. Here is the thing, this is a show that to one extent or another sensationalizes some of the events that happened. There is an old writer's truth. Fantasy has to make sense, reality rarely does. A lot of the things that actually happened, didn't make it into the show because folks wouldn't believe it happened.

Paddy was not crazy, but just a man dedicated and far better suited to the demands of close combat than those skills of putting up with people he considered 'pen pushers'. He upset some people, so he did not receive the Victoria Cross. But he received the Distinguished Service Order FOUR times - The DSO was second only to the VC for Officer valour. He is probably the ultimate in combat leaders - wild, eccentric, skilled, brave and with a group who would have gladly followed him to the gates of hell if he asked it. He was a great rugby international for Ireland, and his best friend died early in the war. There was nothing going on between them, it is called pure comradeship. If you have served, you will understand that you can 'love' your soldiers - NOT in that way - as they are your friends, your family, you fight as a tight nit unit, and they would die for you if necessary - as you would die for them without question. The series is not totally accurate, but the events at Termoli certainly are. It gives an overall 'taste' of what went on. I will not elaborate on Paddy's personal 'ride of the valkyries' in 1945. Oh, to have been there on that day!

There is a difference between getting into a drunken scrap and letting Paddy go back to the regiment because that’s where he needs to be just look at general Patton. I don’t believe they let a constantly drunk loony with zero respect for the rules. The real paddy was a way better character than what’s portrayed in the tv show.

Yeah, I'm sure the real Paddy was a bit mad, but I don't think he was the deranged drunken psycopath as portrayed in the series whose own men were scared of him (although he was known for getting into scraps). The real Paddy was also born to a landed family, played Rugby Union for the British and Irish Lions, and trained as a solicitor, so he wasn't quite the aristocratic-hating working class man as portrayed in the series either.

In this video it captures MONTY,as he was known, American Generals disliked him,it was after the Japanese bombed Pearl HARBOR, America was forced into the war,Monty wanted all the credit for winning the war,but WINSTON CHURCHILL knew better, without America, we would be living in much different world, then today. Nowadays America has to be the world's POLICEMAN, as many different dictators have come and gone, but nowadays everything is very high technology, which isn't cheap at all, takes a lot of money, to produce and maintain these things, since I am a Vietnam era Veteran, everything has changed for the better of mankind, democracy still prevails supreme.

Crap spoken by American Generals who were afraid he would expose the lot of them for their casual disregard of casualties. Don't forget Ike put him in charge of two US Armies Hodges and Simpson after Bradley was in a funk. And with his 21 Army Group they straightened the Bulge Simpson and Monty got on well both had been at the front in WW1 We left Vietnam and left South Vietnam to the mercies of the NVA and then did the same in Afghanistan where they killed our allies there. Although I must say the Vietnamese under the Communists are doing very well .

Rogue Heroes Season 2 is bad. What happened to the staff that wrote and filmed Season 1? Season 2 is complete crap, with bad writing, terrible acting and amateurish filming and special effects.

Prince Bernard of the Netherlands indicated that Montgomery was an extremely unpleasant person. He is also largely responsible for the failed Operation Market Garden, but he made the Polish general Stanisław Sosabowski bleed for it. Sosabowski was deceived by him into promising that he could lead an invasion of Poland. At that time an uprising had broken out by the population in Poland. So he should have gone there immediately to help, but Montgomery first told him to fix Market Garden. Sosabowski warned from the start that this would end in a bloodbath, but Montgomery would have none of it. During the time that Market Garden took place, the uprising in Poland was forcefully suppressed by the occupiers. Many felt betrayed by Sosabowski and executed several of his soldiers after the war. These men were real heroes. They were the last to leave Market Garden to cover the rest. After the botched operation, Sosabowski was destroyed by Montgomery and died alone as a poor ticket seller. Fortunately, this was corrected by the Dutch government by posthumously honoring him and his battalion with the highest military decoration, the militaire Willemsorde.
