In real life, Stirling did not refuse to integrate the French. It was even quite the opposite : he asked De Gaulle to "borrow" French paratroopers in England. There were too few SAS men and he needed experienced men quickly. Nowadays there are English and French SAS, with the same motto (Who dares wins/Qui ose gagne). Incredibly brave men. Long live the Anglo-French friendship

Written by Steven Knight of Peahy Blinders fame. The same style, modern music used, very stylish, cracking story and about as real as peaky was to 1930s gangsters in B'ham. Writing strong female roles is one of his strengths hence i suppose the invention of the french agent. Its a good watch, but the real story is just as amazing, just not as exquisitely shot.

Interesting to see an Indian officer in one of the scenes. My grandfather (Australian) rarely spoke of the war but did say that he found the Indians to be an amazingly courageous force. Spoke highly of the British soldiers also. But British officers were as “useful as tits on a bull”.

Too bad it somewhat does a disservice to what the SAS was in North Africa. Stirling specifically designed this force and trained his men to be Saboteurs and demolitions experts for blowing lots of stuff not mercilessly killing loads of the enemy. Historically there was one instance during a raid were he reprimanded Paddy Mayne for shooting up a cabin full of German pilots and ground crew that he caught having a party. Since their job wasn't killing loads of enemies but blowing up loads of planes and whatever else they could manage. He apparently did this to rein Paddy in and discourage that kind of behavior so he'd focus on blowing up planes instead considering his depiction of being crazy enough to pick fights with anyone and everyone is quite accurate to based on his fellows wrote about him after the war.
