Looked like they were fronting the programme from the Newsnight studio that day. (It also looked like they ran the opening rather than closing titles in a panic when the tape froze.)

That's actually how Grandstand ended in the past they played the opening titles first then zoomed out for the credits

Eh? Strange comment. England's cricketers currently hold both one-day world titles and have been frequently good at Test level these last 20 years with the odd blip here and there. Even the football team have improved over the last 5 years

Must have been a *good* six years after this was taped. R&S didn't reach UK terrestrial TV until at least 1994 via BBC2 (this was from 1988). However, those old TV tapes could lasted years, if not *decades.* We had tapes that were taped off TV we kept for at least 20 years before the digital switchover came about and we had to chuck them away.

5:10 to 5:43 : Same with England *every single* international championship bar one or two exceptions, no matter the manager, the players, the conditions; always the same on-field collapses, the same results and the same excuses. The PL and money has just since further hindered it since, but I think the biggest problem is the FA themselves and the system they put themselves out in terms of developing English players and coaches. Unless that changes and changes now, England will keep churning out the same failures and excuses for decades and decades on end.
