I’m 45 and my 14yr old must have discovered them on his own online somewhere because he was studying with his headphones on humming “number 13’ I asked what he was listening to and he said “this band I found. The Pixies, You would like them, kinda a violent femmes meets Jane’s Addiction .” I honestly was overwhelmed with emotions out of nowhere. It was like looking at myself at that age, lost, angst filled, trying to connect to something, anything that made me feel seen, heard, understood, anything just to not feel so all alone. I remembered my mom telling me my music was trash and throwing out my tapes. I saw the Hope in his eyes and the excitement of introducing me to one of my favorite bands back when I was his age. So I didn’t ruin it for him. I let him play the entire Doolittle album and afterwards told him it was the coolest album ever and thanks for sharing it with me. It was a beautifully touching moment and I have the pixies to thank for it! ❤

Lol and then I asked "Is your name Frank?" and so on. After telling him I was a big fan and had Surfer Rosa in my car he goes "well today i'm just a fat guy buying yoga clothes!" I have been watching this band perform this song for 30 years now and the last couple of years it has become an almost religious experience. It has transcended everything it has ever been before and ascended to a plane of pure sonic joy for me that nothing else has even come close to. I'd say that in its current incarnation, the live version has achieved perfection, but that doesn't do it justice. It's perfect, but it's perfect even for a Pixies song. There is simply nothing to compare to the experience of standing in the middle of a dance floor in a crowded auditorium, eyes closed, gently swaying to the calm-before-the-storm bass groove, knowing that with each controlled-chaos verse, hell is going to break a little more loose. By the time we get to "break the walls and kill us all", I am screaming the words back at Charles Thompson with the understanding that though he wrote them, I am feeling them, because that is his will. This song, and the way it is played today, stands as one of the greatest rock and roll achievements of my lifetime.

@VeritableSmorgasbord5 жыл бұрын
I think a strong appreciation of their '90s material is essential in coming to that conclusion, which is something that sadly far too many Pixies fans lack. Those are the albums that raise the Pixies from a band that can hang with (and often better) the best Rock n Roll and Punk bands to a band that can hang with the best "serious" pop and art bands (Beatles, Kinks, Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, as well as stuff they inspired themselves like Radiohead and Arcade Fire). To be a band that can rock so hard AND play such beautiful things is basically unprecedented, and the result is an extremely important catalog of amazing sonic depth.

Exactly. Pixies are all about contrast between bassy calm verses and noisewall choruses

Listened to this a couple months back, I had a dream today where I was playing this intro with my bass. Felt happy like I haven't felt in years. This performance is out of this world.

Gouge away, you can gouge away Stay all day if you want to Missy aggravation Some sacred questions, you stroke my locks Some marijuana if you got some Gouge away, you can gouge away Stay all day if you want to Sleeping on your belly You break my arms, you spoon my eyes Been rubbing a bad charm with holy fingers Gouge away, you can gouge away Stay all day if you want to Chained to the pillars A 3 day party, I break the walls And kill us all with holy fingers Gouge away, you can gouge away Stay all day if you want to

franks voice definitely has gone... but this means some new pixies material will have a more "bluesy" quality to them

Paz is so cute and talented! I like her playing and her singing! She compliments and improves this song! I’m so glad they found her! She has reinvigorated and revived this band! And they are making good music! This late in the game that’s a minor miracle! And she can play the violin too! I’m glad they are still touring! One of the last great indie type bands! 🔥💥🎸😎

The texture/lyrical/musical genius that Charles and Joey created together is lightning in a bottle that won’t be seen again in anyone else for a long time. Can’t forget how much Kim brought to the table either.
