I hadn't really liked much of the music they made since their comeback, but this sounds great. I think the main problem was that their older stuff was so influential that most of the 00s indie bands sounded like them. So upon returning, they ended up seeming derivative, even though it was their very own groundbreaking original sound. It was just the wrong time. Now that that glut is finally over, and only the more creative bands endured, they are sounding fresh again.

Joey is one of those guitarists that started up, learned a few chords and some single note lines, got into a band, band gets famous and he decides "well, this works, no need to practice, improve or evolve." Like, if you just put a guitar in his hands outside the context of the Pixies, he wouldn't know wtf to do with it. If you didn't know who he was you'd be like "well hey, maybe with some lessons..."

Yes, guys like Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and Curt Cobain cite him as influences because he has no clue what he's doing. Keep that big brain working buddy.
@enkiea83225 жыл бұрын
@@nilsheutehaus7546 Well, those guys mostly cited the Pixies as an influence, not specifically Santiago. Regardless, I'm not saying what he's playing doesn't have value or fit wrong within the contect of the Pixies music. I'm saying he's never improved as a player, period. Being "influential" doesn't change that fact. I state as much in my original comment that he/they certainly are successful. Being successful doesn't make you proficient. Whether or not you're influential/successful; never improving at your craft in 30+ years of professional gigging/recording just because other influential players give you props is lame. Btw, intimating someone is unintelligent just because you don't agree with their opinions/observations doesn't say much about your "big brain," you salty, sensitive little fan boy.
@enkiea83225 жыл бұрын
@Luke Robinett I've never known major 7 chords and single string, 8th note melody lines to be "unconventional." I'm not saying he should or needs be Steve Vai or whatever "masculine guitar trope" types you're so repulsed by but there's certainly a middle ground between everything and nothing.
@enkiea83225 жыл бұрын
@Luke Robinett You're misunderstanding me/overreacting to my point. I'm a huge Pixies fan. They are also one of my biggest influences. Since growing well into my 30's, it's been a while since I've listened to or watched any Pixies. I heard the single "Catfish Kate" and loved it and then after listening, KZbin recommended some new live performances. I saw them play live several times years ago and after seeing them play in these videos for the first time in years, I found it kind of shocking that not only had he not improved, he seems to struggle even arpeggiateing simple barre chords and plays sour notes on simple melody lines. Joey himself is aware of it and clearly self conscious about it because I've already heard him point it out himself in several performances and interviews. Just because I love, respect or am influenced by an artist doesn't mean I should make them immune/above critical observation. Sadly, it seems the world is heading full steam into that direction. Thicker skin is required.

low energy and low creativity, this sounds like a random track on a boring Franck Black album. They did make a few great new songs since they reformed but they added so many "meh" ones. There wasn't a weak song in the first four album. Mixed feelings.

Not quite. Beneath the Eyrie is moody and Head Carrier is fun but then again just average for Pixies standards. But Indie Cindy is classic Pixies from beginning to end.
