This isn't scientifically accurate, and Badawi is wrong to present it in this way. "White" and "black" are modern social constructs. Human population characteristics are fluid and not so easily categorized. Egyptians were not "white" or "black" - they were Egyptian. Claiming that they were either white or black is a product of ignorance at best, and in often an outgrowth of racist sentiment.

I love how Dr. Hawass said he could find out the queen died from cancer but did not want to do the DNA test. I would do the DNA test because it would be fascinating. But that aside, just from their statues you can see they are Africans, and and most likely mixtures of other races. I don't know why people are still debating that a civilization that is located in Africa could not be African. I love this series, though not perfect, Zeinab Badawi has done a great job trying to present this complex history.

A CT Scan is a noninvasive procedure, that's how they discovered the cancer. DNA testing requires the destruction of parts of the mummies, as it would require bone marrow for the test. Or are you talking ethnically/racially, if you define it through that small minded lens, then North African's are ethnically different than Sub-Saharan African's. Ancient Egyptian's share more genetic markers and similarities to those from Ancient Mesopotamia and Ancient Anatolia. It is true there were "Black" pharaohs but only one short lived dynasty, the 25th dynasty the Nubian's from modern day Sudan and Ethiopia.

@@Andu_music I think the truth is a long story.. & probably a bit more complex than now known. from looking at all the evidence I could see, I do think the early dynasties & Kingdoms had at the very least a ruling royal class of black African ancestry of possibly sub-Saharan origin. but in ancient societies, the ruling class sometimes is not representative of the general population. the only DNA survey of ancient Egyptian remains comes from a middle Egyptian Cemetary w burials dating from around 1200 BC to 1000 AD. so no DNA from the earliest periods are included. its reported that the DNA was relatively stable showing the closest connection to the Levant not sub-Saharan Africa. But I also see what everyone sees, especially in the earlier sculptures..."African" type features in the faces of the royal families. what I also see, it seems, is that over time, the features became somewhat less "African" looking. so this seems to fit in with the later DNA evidence from middle Egypt of the later period. are these royal burials or just upper-class or middle-class burials? it could make a difference in what the DNA actually means. Once the Assyrians & Persians invaded, the foreign influence on Egypt grew. the DNA shows that with the arrivals of Arabs in the 7th century AD...sub-Saharan DNA crossing the desert to North Africa increased during this time. so the entire story is still yet to be fully understood by way of the evidence.

@Esireyewun Sanni 8:28 The wall paintings literally prove it, no arabs or any caucasians can look anything like that or can be nearly that dark and rich brown, its impossible they don't have that melanin and no arabs look like that anywhere unless they are at least half black, these people are the exact same color and appearance as Ethiopians, Eritreans, Somalians or black southern Egyptians like in the video 5:32, you can see this woman as she say's is the exact same color as the majority of the ancient Egyptians in the art, its literally common sense, anyone who denies this is a completely delusional mad person. But because everything you hear about Egypt is dominated by racist biased white people who bombard your mind with movies and cartoon images showing white actors dressing up as Egytians and cartoon images of a fantasy white Egypt, your brain makes you mistake all this conditioning as reality, especially coupled with the years of degrading racist propaganda against Africa and black people by neo-colonizers that dominate the media, its literally a cover up, the first European explorers all admitted they were black at first site of the artworks and the Sphinx, but the European scientific racist darwinists took over the narrative and tried to bully and discredit the first wave of honest explorers and used the power of books and motion picture to create a fantasy whitish/caucsian Egypt that is non existent in the ancient artworks.

They didn't just simply show up cuz the desert got hot. The engine that drove African culture before AE was the Neolithization wherein pastoralists who originated in Ethiopia spread into the wet Sahara, The Nile Valley, north Africa, the Levant and Littoral Europe. They spread language, cattle, agriculture, cultural elements and the kingship tradition throughout these regions. This was BEFORE ancient Egypt or Mesopotamia existed. So during this wet phase , what is now The Sahel was the richest and most fertile land in the world and the center of African culture. It is also the location of the oldest implementation of agriculture going back 15,000 years. The Sahara-Sudan Neolithic was the largest continuous culture in the world at the time and parts of it are still intact to this day. Ancient Egypt was a culmination of African culture. Before Egypt there was Punt or Kush which is also called Nubia. It was this culture Ta-Seti was founded on around 5900 bc. Ta-Seti had at least ten pharaohs before AE was a civilization. It was the cultures in the south that went north to establish Kemet. Before that there were the Badarians, Capsians, Quadan, Halfan, Kebaran and Sebilian cultures. All of those cultures existed in the Nile Valley BEFORE AE and that is only going back 30,000 years. So spare me your elementary school version of African history.

Why is Dr hawass so angry about the truth. No matter what people say, these people were black and as black people we all have different shades of colour. Its only because the colonisation of the arabs, caucasions and jews that the country is now mixed. I'm in love with this series of documentaries: it is true that little to nothing is taught in western schools about the history of Africa and how this links to the history of the humankind. It comforts me the fact that essentially we were all dark-skinned some 8 to 10K years ago, and that Africa is the Motherland to all of us human-beings. Living in Africa for about a decade, I also think that the current inhabitants of Africa, especially black people, should abandon this logic of competition (and victimism) among themselves and towards "the West" and aim at the development of the continent without looking for excuses in international conspiracy, because there is no doubt that the future will be (re) written in Africa. There should not be a dominant culture, but the respect (and knowledge) of all of them. The future of humanity will be hybrid and diversity will just be a form of advantage instead of a source of hate and competition. May the good faith protect and promote our Motherland.

We we firstly surprised to see East African. We don’t know any East Africans in the family. Secondly we also had North African. Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia DNA. Yet we don’t know anyone in the family from those areas either. I liked what the black African scholar said. That Egyptians were from all over Africa, that they were a mixture of all Africans from certain regions that migrated to Egypt. That makes a lot of sense to me. It makes the most sense.

thank you so much for this series! I was waiting for an episode on Egypt hence I am one, three to years ago I started to think about my origins and where do I come from. My father is Egyptian and my mother is Syrian. So I am mixed which was a common thing to take place back in the old days. I don't have too many African features except for my nose which can be viewed as a bit large long side a darker tone skin compared to my sister who is white super white haha (she gets most of that from my mother unlike me). I started to think a little bit deeper about who I truly am? I slowly started to stop calling myself an Arab. the only reason people refer to us as Arabs I due to the language we speak, which got me thinking, you can't call Mexicans Spanish only because they speak the Spanish language. I started to read and educate myself bit by bit, and slowly reach a conclusion where I can call myself an African or a man that comes of African descent. The religion I currently identify with was never my people's religion or belief, it was something that came with the people that crossed the land and came to Egypt. the language I speak right now is also not my own but rather it's the mark that was left by the "occupiers" that came to Egypt. Egypt sadly could not hold on to their language nor beliefs. I sometimes feel so upset that we could not carry all of that forward. I don't know, just like putting this one out there. again thank you, and hopefully, we can have another similar series!

Yes, they are Africans by virtue of birthplace. If you were born on Mars you would be a Martian, regardless of race or what you call yourself. I think this is the first programme about the ancient Egyptians I've watched, ever, that just jumps right into this highly contentious topic - it's rather refreshing. I don't know exactly what I think, given its incredibly long history, but many rural modern Egyptians (especially in southern Egypt), I can't help but think that in most contexts even they would be deemed "black" (but that could also be a result of more recent history). Many aspects of the ancient culture too, especially something like the hair/wigs and textures seems undeniably "black".

Do you think all of us, Wether we are Africans, Asians, or Oceanians will know the so called history if there is no Europeans learned our history comprehensively? Will all of us still can see our ancestors artifacts if they never kept it in their museum.? No, we will take all of our ancient artifacts sell it for a cheap price or destroy it all for the sake of religious reasons. I still feel devastated when the ancient Buddhist Statues in Afghanistan was blown up by Talibans and when the Prehistoric Artifacts and Sites was destroyed by ISIS. No, we still can't kept and study our own history academically. Zainab herself was educated in London not in her ancestral country. She will never be an outstanding historian if she grew up in Somalia.

The Akan group in Ghana has their own calendar and the Adinkra writings never mentioned. Indeed Africa is complex than what other people were trying to portray. For many years I have questioned the way the Akan's bury their kings and chiefs, very similar to ancient Egypt, things were not adding up, now it makes sense. People don't trust Egyptologist anymore. Their research about ancient Egypt is not considered academic findings because they are not objective and factual. They attached their feelings and ego to their findings that's why they ignored the Sudan civilisation which was part of Egypt back then. Shame on them. The manuscripts found in Timbuktu (Mali) contains lots of information about African civilisations.
