I live on the island of Oahu, and see this behavior from the our native 'Auku'u heron all the time in the Kawainui stream. I'll take some bread and through it at the 'Auku'u and it will carefully and strategically position the bread within easy reach so that it can grab the Tilapia that come to feed on the bread. He will constantly reposition the bread to keep it from drifting out of reach. Not sure if it is a learned behavior or natural instinct but either way it is amazing to watch, and not uncommon.

Funny enough I had the weird thought that this is in fact the same sort of thing Jesus did to collect a ton of fish with just a bit of bread. I was researching using bread as bait on KZbin and this came up. Noticed how a TON of fish came after that little bit of bread? As if it was some sort of feeding frenzy? Imagine just setting a net out for fish and catching little to nothing. Toss a loaf of bread into the water atop the net after casting it into the water. Watch as a frenzy of fish gather around the loaf shredding it to pieces. Once you can no longer see any bread remaining immediately pull in the net. See how much more fish you catch using such a method. This is an experiment for me to try someday.

Just a reminder to never feed bread to birds! It's really bad for them. Go with birdseed or cracked corn instead. Ducks, geese, & swans are also happy to take lettuce.

At best, it's essentially junk food - lots of calories with very little nutritional value. If they eat too much of it though, they can get malnourished. In extreme cases, a high-calorie diet can cause ducks and geese to develop a condition called 'Angel Wing' which makes them unable to fly (look it up on Wikipedia for pictures and more info). A little bit of bread isn't really harmful, but the problem is that in many parks many people are feeding birds bread all the time, and it ends up making up a huge portion of their diet. Another problem is that people often feed birds leftover stale or mouldy bread to get rid of it. Mould is just as bad for birds as it is for us and can make them very sick.

It's actually against the law .. but if the city employees catch anyone ... they concentrate on education, rather than fines .. and they'll ask the offenders to give them the rest of the bread too

I’ve always found night herons endearing. There was one at the Maui Plantation that would wait for guests to throw fish food into the pond it hung around, and would stand by the food until it saw a suitable sized fish. It was pretty interesting seeing it get excited when people started feeding the fish, and it would hop over to the site before waiting impatiently. Always seemed like it had a personality.
