So, this is awesome that jay has made it to BBC content. But I'm wondering why the production quality on his own videos is so much better. The audio for example is super consistent on his videos but this was a mess. Echoes from the room then nice mic recording on the talk over bits. No consistent volume and weird timings. On top of that, he was only allowed to do one silly thing with the oven...

I think there are a lot of negatives about city life that can't really be solved with smart technology. You can't create extra green space from an internet of things, nor can you fix an overstretched transportation system (though some improvements are possible). If we could we'd design the city of the future from the ground up, and it would probably look very different, maybe large apartment blocks in a park like space with motorised transport like cars trains and buses buried underground or elevated. But we have to work with our existing designs so we end up with very imperfect solutions.

Well, cities, particularly major cities are double edged swords. On one hand, they allow millions of people to live on a relatively small piece of land, on the other hand, major metropolitan areas tend to be hot beds for crime and there's kilotons of stress about making ends meet. Also, commuting to a downtown or midtown office is often a nightmare, particularly for those who live in the outer suburbs.

smart infrastructure is an appealing target for hackers, and there's been some media coverage of greyhat phreaking in America already - I'm kind of along for the ride on that. If someone works out how to send morse code through streetlights, it'll be a more interesting world.

The most important thing for a city is balancing a lot of things mainly transportation, if a city solves transportation they there is room for solving other problems, like a city can create a better image by removing cars and adding parks in those places, like insted of a parking lot there could be a playground there.

Do I live in a city? That really depends on how you define a city. Certainly this is an urban area of sorts, but whether this qualifies as a small city or a large town is very hard to nail down. And, it is otherwise in a rural area well away from other things. (actually by the standards of this country it's incredibly close to many other towns and cities, but oh well... There's those variable definitions again...)

I live on a cul-de-sac, my neighborhood only has single-family homes, the nearest (open) "subway" station is 15km away, and more people commute out of my municipality than into it. I surely cannot be living in a city. And yet I live in one of the 10 largest cities (by population) in the U.S.
