Henry Whitehead was more than just the local gossip. He was Instrumental in convincing the world that cholera was water-bourne. After Snows death, he carried on the work and ultimately proved the point during a later outbreak in the East End. This led London to remode their sewage systems. Also, it wasn’t the local authorities who refused to heed the advice of John Snow and Whitehead, it was he scientific community. The whole point should’ve been the bravery of two men who were willing to challenge majority opinion using the scientific method!
@hassananwar9833

Another factor that led to the new sewers was the great stink of 1858, that name explains it all.
@IronicHavoc
@IronicHavoc 2 жыл бұрын
That was the point. They mentioned that it was the scientific community that ignored Snow's findings. I think the confusing part is that "people in charge" is referring to scientific authorities in the historical example, and political/governmental authorities in the modern analogy. But I think the general gist of the analogy is true regardless - that people in charge in pretty much any context will have a tendency to keep the status quo.

This story is even more fascinating when you learn that at the same time Dr Snow was investigating this outbreak, another guy was designing the modern sewer system as a way to combat cholera because he believed the smell caused the disease - but in putting the sewage underground to stop the miasma, he inadvertently got it away from the city's water system thus saving more lives. Both he and Dr Snow lived about a block apart while they worked on the same problem and never met.

Well, those poor beggars had no choice but go outside and ask randomly selected strangers about their experiences and then map those strangers. Nowadays all you need to do is make a few phonecalls (pardon, I'm rather old we still used telephones to talk to each other in those days) I MEANT google stuff on the internet or just plain make up things as you go. People don't want facts, they want to be entertained!

He only had a sample size of a block.... And cholera is transmitted by a static source. The moment interspecies transmission enters there are just way too many variables.... People see many more people. You bump into many many strangers each day. Go to the supermarket and buy something specific and count how many people you come close to Once the pandemic ends otherwise your results will be off due to social distancing (I hope). You'll see soon how MANY people there are.

More than likely, they've probably never heard of them. Neither had I until late last year. KZbin is full of niche interest circles and the moment you step out of them you realise that these channels are utterly unknown to the population at large. Try running down your street yelling "Hey, do you watch Map Men?" and I will be amazed if a single person knows what you're going on about. At the same time though, who's to say TV companies haven't already tried to hire them? Broadcasters do make attempts to sniff out talent from the influencer pool, but quite often the influencers reply with a no thanks. The bigger influencers are probably making more money being on KZbin which is one factor. Another major factor is that by working on TV, it means handing over your copyright, as well as your editorial and stylistic independence to the production company and broadcaster. For some, that's a step too far.
