Just one run a week can significantly affect the length of your life. That's according to scientists who say regular running reduces the risk of developing serious illnesses. Neil and Georgina discuss the story and teach you vocabulary in this free English lesson.
The story
Researchers say regular running, no matter how far or how fast, substantially reduces the risk of an early death. A team from Australia, Thailand and Finland examined data on nearly a quarter of a million people, and found that any amount of running was linked to a 27% reduction in mortality.
Key words and phrases
slash
reduce something by a significant amount
Examples:
Running could slash the risk of dying prematurely.
Rob needs to slash his biscuit intake!
premature
earlier than the expected or natural time
Examples:
My sister’s baby was born premature.
The England fans were premature in their celebration at the Rugby World Cup!
run for your life
move as fast as possible away from danger
Examples:
There’s a fire! Run for your life!
We thought we saw a shark so ran for our lives!
Language challenge
Which of these is wrong?
a) to go for a run
b) to go a run
c) to go running
You'll find the answer on our website:

1/ Slash (v): Negative meaning: cut something by knife violently Positive meaning: reduce something by significant amount To slash the risk of something 2/ Premature (a): earlier than expected or natural time Pre = before, mature = to be ready 3/ Run for your life: move as fast as possible away from danger Negative way: get out of/ move away from dangerous situation Positive way: doing helpful something now, the good result will come in future. A slow 50- minute jog a week is very effective to help live longer. It can not only slash the risk of health issues but also the premature dangers. Thus, we keep doing exercise to run for our life!

Hi~ I've got one question about this video here. When they were explaining the word "slash", Neil said that he would not say 'Rob needs to slash......'. And Georgena agreed. However, that sentence is shown in the slides as an example. mmmm... I feel a little bit confused.

I think that those who simply can't run, or have difficulties to do it, have obviously a bad health, so they die earlier. But in another point of view, those who run often, will not stop being able to run, if they like it. So they will carry on their health to remain able to run.

Although we're sure chefs and cooks would agree with you, we commonly use 'cut' with 'cake'. In weddings there are often cake-cutting ceremonie where people gather to watch the bride and groom make the first cut (slice) into the cake. 😃
