I'm Japanese, and today's topic is quite interesting. In terms of crying, it seems that Japanese and Brits have a similar tendency. I'd like to avoid crying in front of people as much as possible.

In Italy, instead, when someone dies, it's common to express your sadness by crying, we don't pay someone to do that like in India, but we tend not to repress our feelings. Even when we meet a person we know, we tend to express our friendship by kissing or shaking hands

I totally agree with that video. People of each country express their feelings differently. I've heard that people In Russia hide their emotions when bad accident happen. However men did that. In my point of view expressing emotions depend on individual people too

Vocabulary from this video BBC 6-minute English "How culture affects sadness": - Best-selling (adj) - extremely popular, be sold in very large numbers. Bestseller (n) - a product that is extremely popular and has sold in very large numbers. Exp: She is a best-selling author; a best-selling book. - Down in the dumps (idiom) - feel unhappy or sad. Exp: She's a bit down in the dumps because she failed one of her exams. He feels down in the dumps when he sees his girlfriend go with others. - Miserable (adj) - unhappy, sad, blue; unpleasant. - Depressed (adj) - unhappy and without hope. Exp: He seemed a bit depressed about his current job. He felt miserable. - To be fed up (adj) - unhappy, bored, or tired of something, especially if it has been happening for a long time. Exp: Everyone is fed up with Covid. - Melancholy (n) - a type of intense and thoughtful sadness; depression or sadness that lasts for a long period of time, often without any obvious reasons. Melancholy (adj) - sad Exp: In Irish culture, melancholy is expressed artistically in poems and songs. A melancholy song; melancholy autumn days. - Grief (n) - great sorrow, unhappiness, strong sadness, or emotional pain, usually caused by someone's death. Exp: In India, grief can be expressed by professional mourners who are paid to cry by the family of the person who has died. - Repressed (adj) - unable to show their true feelings or emotions. - Conquer (v) - defeat, overcome. Exp: The Normans conquered England in the 8th century; You must conquer your fear of the dark. - Ruling (adj) - governing/ being in control of a country, a society. - Stiff upper lip (idiom) - not showing or feeling emotions. To have a stiff upper lip; to keep a stiff upper lip. Exp: Someone who has a stiff upper lip does not show their feelings when they're upset. There are many words that describe sadness, such as melancholy, grief, sorrow, and depression, but they can have slightly different meanings. The way people express their emotions is also influenced by their culture. For example, in Irish culture, melancholy is often expressed through poems and songs, whereas in Japan, crying is seen as weak and shameful. Similarly, in the UK, many British people are not encouraged to express their sadness, and men often feel pressure to maintain a stiff upper lip and repress their emotions. It's important to remember that hiding your true feelings won't make you happy. Instead, try making new friends and learning new things to help you feel better. Many thanks for this video. Have a great weekend.

Turkish: Yas tutanların ünlü sert üst dudakları, acılarını bastırmaya çalışırken sarsıldı, ancak içten içe mutsuz ve üzgündüler. English: She was feeling down in the dumps and fed up with the associated sorrow and grief. Turkish: O, içine kapanık hissediyor ve bu ilişkilendirilen hüzün ve acıdan bıkmış durumdaydı.

There are so many expressions for the feeling sadness nowadays. The earliest way of describing the sad feeling is the phrase fed up. It is also important to notice that each culture in certain periods have distinctive ways to show sadness. In Victorian time, the British was to be the conquerer so they had to keep the stiff upper lip or in other words put up a brave front. However, this is an unhealthy pratice as it hinders emotion expressions, which later make someone feel repressed.
