Ours is crumbling too. But they are moving into a new part of Parliament, and will take about six years for the whole thing, the Senate is also moving so they can get fixed at the same time. Cutting new basements under both chambers at the same time and finish the rest when they return to their homes. Why? It sits on top of a solid rock plateau of Canadian Shield.

What's the betting that in late 2018 or early 2019 the government will announce a further delay to the start of repairs, thus likely bumping up the cost and timescale further?
@johnnyboy39497 жыл бұрын
mittfh then labour will come into power and delay it further and further.

The official decision has been made. House of Commons will move to Richmond House, with a replica chamber to the current House of Commons there being used. House of Lords will move to the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre. For the annual State Opening of Parliament, the ceremony will be based all at Richmond House. The start date is now set for 2025, and the restoration period of work will take 6 years. They want to only move out once Big Ben and the clock tower is fully restored, with completion on that project set for 2021.

It's now 2021 and restoration has not started yet? Both houses of the Canadian parliament have already moved out Parliament Hill to begin their restoration.

Delay it until 2019?! Why is that amount of consideration time necessary? Am I the only one baffled by the stupidity of this delay?
@namelessguy1994 жыл бұрын
This is a bit misleading, it was not delayed just for the MPs to make up their mind, it is that the project of such a scale takes a while to plan so in the mean time, the MPs can still remain in the building

Already happening to Canada's Parliament Buildings. The House of Commons and the Senate have temporary locations!

Old MPs are scared they will never get back in again. That's what it's all about.

Better still move out permanently in a new building in another city. Why do everything has to be London centric in UK.
@murdelabop7 жыл бұрын
Just move into temporary facilities and get the job done most quickly and with the best value. This is such a no-brainer it's impossible to understand why they don't just do it. But I suppose nothing less than the building falling down around their ears will get their attention!

Knock it down and build a new building. Stop living in the past. It's not as if there has never been another parliament building.
