Every aspiring musician should watch this. If they don't watch it all, they should at least listen to the last five minutes. Five star advice.

What a great Masterclass. I've saved and made pictures of a couple of quotes from here! Defining your expectations - which John Mayer also speaks of is so important or overlooked. Find it all very relevant.

I haven't used a radio in years. I still believe, although it may be the destination, that the very statement of this fact in this way just proves that radio had and still has a chokehold/monopoly on music and the music industry. In parts this lecture is brilliant but in the back of my mind is why is this coming from the BBC ;)

No, any aspiring musician should ignore this video. It's grim!... He's saying you should just post your music online and hope for the best!. Wow, what a fantastic world.

'The rule of nine' - Thank you! That is going to stick in my head now every time I'm writing a song and I hate it, I'll remember what you said and I'll FINISH it instead of chucking it away, and I'll keep doing that until I get to the nine. I'm so pleased I watched this.

Tom makes a lot of sense, but as far as what he said about fans, real fans support the music when they buy it. If someone can get music for free why buy it.Fans that buy the music provide a valuable service, they make it possible for artist to make more of the music the fans love. People aren't stupid, they know professionals sell their music. When someone presents themselves in an honest way,I'll listen to what they have and if it moves me I'll buy it. Buying music and paying for concert tickets shows respect to the artists that dedicate their lives to share what's in their souls. The greatest hits of all time often times were accidents.

They're people who try to get your music played, be it radio or adverts, films or TV. They've essentially replaced the promotion aspect of a record deal. Now all a record deal does is give you money to record. Whereas they used to do everything for you.
