Who is Julian Assange and why does the US want to extradite him? - BBC News

Julian Assange, the man behind Wikileaks, says he’s the victim of a US conspiracy to punish him for exposing alleged US war crimes.
Assange set up Wikileaks in 2006 to expose secrets that he, and others, thought should be exposed, including alleged US war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan. But the US says the leaks broke the law and endangered lives.
Assange had sought asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London to avoid deportation. He remained there for nearly 7 years until he was ejected and arrested.
A UK district judge blocked his extradition after his lawyer told the court that the risk of suicide would be "imminent the moment extradition becomes likely". An appeal is now going to the British High Court where they will decide if he should face extradition to the USA.

The rape case itself was ridiculous from the beginning: It wasn't outright rape. It was that there was consent, but he happened to operate outside of the scope of that consent. They claim some women consented to have sex with him, but he didn't wear a condom (even though she allowed that) she later decided that was rape. That's how bullshit these allegations were.

If I got it right, in a 4 min clip that literally spent 70% of it bashing Assange's image. It boils down to, US "telling he should wait in prison". Now, "after 10 year of incarceration without charges, come here to US of North A (because I won't mix myself with their entitlements) to face life-time charges and be tortured". Also, there are the hidden prisons that got exposed like Guantanamo bay, Poland's etc. Also, they torture people? Also, did Germany and Japan really defeated in WW2? Doesn't seem like it.

From France: If I have a great deal of respect for the Americans, it is those who fought in Europe during the last world war. But since the end of the war, the Americans in power looked more like those who had continued to sell fuel to the Nazis until December 1941, when Europe had been at war for 2 years. I have tremendous respect for the people of Britain and their actions during the last world war. They brought us victory. This respect will be greatly reduced if the British still have to agree to submit to the USA by accepting the extradition of Mr. Assange, whose only harm was to expose the shenanigans and total disrespect for international law and their intelligence services. USA does not blame M. Assange for lying, but only beacause he revealed the Truth. I would not be surprised to learn that the relentless way in which the US wants to capture Mr. Assange hides the fear that the journalist still holds even more explosive secrets. For many years, I wanted to see the United States. I gave up. I boycotted the United States, their damn dollar, their oil, their bourbon, and all their products. Let them feed on their produce, their bananas, wines, almonds, wheat and pistachios produced by destroying biodiversity. I know that I am not isolated in this process. If the British had the disgrace of extraditing Mr. Assange, I would do the same for the United Kingdom. No more beer, no more Scotch, no more food, no more products from artists who couldn’t even do a concert to defend Mr. Assange’s cause, no more trips to Scotland, no more trips to Wales or England...

Hi Vinzenso S I'm from Sweden and I totally agree to what you say and to what you feel. Like many Europeans I've had great respect for the American democracy and its quest for peace and stability in the world. I lost that hope many years ago. I share the views on the American culture with Chris Hedges and believe that the politicians who are now ruling the country with all its corrupt institutions (CIA included) and corporations have to crumble and fall allowing a new society to rise from the ashes. As for the UK, I used to spend my summers in England in the 60s. As a teenager I even worked there a summer. At that time it was a place of freedom and common sense, which permeated the society. People were friendly and democracy was at its hight. I find no appropriate words for my disappointment with the UK legal system, which considers a possible extradition, thereby implying that Assange would have been prosecuted and convicted in the UK, had this case been a purely British case about free speech. We have thousands of Swedes living in the UK and they could at least speak up, given that this case is also a part of the scandalous false rape accusations by two Swedish women. The case was eventually and rightly so dropped a few years ago. As a Swede I'm ashamed of us playing a part in this together with CIA. However, there's hope as there're many intellectuals on Assange's side and now even the former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Do you truly believe that French soldiers never committed crimes during war, or even just when invading foreign countries, Mr. Assange is not a journalist, journalists interview, investigate, WRITE, sending their work to their editor. Assange got his information {mostly from Russia} and just forwarded it to feed his own ego .Be thankful to the US!
@itacaperduta
@itacaperduta 2 жыл бұрын
@@dorisaffissio1649 It is useless to invent, and do not make me say what I did not say: I never claimed in my comment that the French soldiers did not commit crimes during the war! Just because I am referring to historical and indisputable facts about the United States does not mean that the French army is blameless. (But if you need more informations, go to: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allied_war_crimes_during_World_War_II#United_States) I’m not going to contrast my version of the role of the journalist with yours, which is a fine example of sophistry. I’m just quoting the Wikipedia definition: "A reporter is a type of journalist who researches, writes and reports on information in order to present using sources. This may entail conducting interviews, information-gathering and/or writing articles. Reporters may split their time between working in a newsroom, or from home, and going out to witness events or interviewing people. Reporters may be assigned a specific beat or area of coverage." This is, against all odds, what Mr. Assange did! Reading your comment, I’m afraid to understand that, when information comes from Russia, it is necessarily false. (another sophistry!) No! What the public expects of a journalist is not the interpretation that the Democrats, the Republicans, or the other politicians will give. What the public expects is only the Truth. So, as I have already said, this is demonstrated: the USA are not suing Mr. Assange for lies or defamation, but simply for revealing real secrets. Even if the information had been given by the Russians, the fact is that he told the Truth. I was already say to be grateful to the American soldiers who joined the Allies. I thank all the Allies who fought against tyranny. I pray for all of them. But, I am not thankful for those who have committed war crimes, crimes against humanity, rapes and acts of plundering; I do not thank those who have caused the virtual extermination of Amerindians, Armenians, and other ethnic groups; I do not thank those who make poisons that kill nature, agriculture, ecosystems, flora and fauna. I do not thank those who want to impose the laws of their country on other nations. I do not thank those who allow themselves without permission to monitor my phone, listen to my calls, read my private messages, or those who want to take possession of my personal data. etc (the list is unfortunately too long). To judge, you must have to have a clean ass. Do you want soap?

I’m a 51yo Melbournian I’ve known Julian Hawkins (real name) since 1989 let me fill in some gaps Julians father left when j was a baby and vanished for 25yrs he moved 40 times 30 diff schools never made friends & spent all day on his computer hacking US & Aus sites until caught and he pleaded guilty to 24 hacking charges but to avoid jail he made a deal to work for police (he only had 1 skill to offer) so it was well known he turned snitch🐁 he left Australia for a reason & won’t return, If you spent 1 hr with Julian you’d realise he’s a very strange person with a very bad temper who has escaped accountability all his life by moving on or making deals or seeking asylum in foreign embassies who doesn’t have close mates but craves attention, Do you realise every document Wikileaks released is now inadmissible in any court giving USA immunity from all war crimes! 😳🤯
