Libya floods: fears that 20,000 have died - BBC News

There are fears that as many as 20,000 people may have died in the flooding that's devastated northern Libya after dams burst during storms.
The coastal city of Derna suffered the worst of the disaster. There have been desperate calls for more humanitarian support as victims lie wrapped in body bags and others have been buried in mass graves. Many people were washed out to sea when the floods struck.
Rescue teams have been digging through the rubble of collapsed buildings in the hope of finding survivors. At least 30,000 people are said to be homeless.

The main dam holds 25 million cubic meters of water (the other dam doesn't count, only 1 million to catch water for local agriculture.) At least 200mm of water fell in the region. Spread that out over 125 square kilometers and you have 25 million cubic meters of water. The drainage area for the Wadi (which means dry river) is more than the needed 12.5x10 kilometers. This is not a tragedy caused by a failed dam or lack of preparedness, but of unprecedented rainfall. Hmm... why does this sound familiar?

My 95 year old uncle ,a Engineer built a dam and we are all very proud of him. 😊 Engineering is an amazing profession.

Met his 85 year old sister ,my aunt in a social function, introduced her to my daughter and sought her blessings, but couldn’t meet my 95 years old ENGINEER uncle and his family, we are big family, they also have 7,8 siblings, it’s a bigggggg family. 😊

@ rebukeme, or something, ethnicity ,sect ,effort,hardwork matters, then comes the dedication of completing the project with non existent structural problems is important, planning , catering to future challenges,newer adaptations matters in mega projects such as building dams by high quality Engineers, my uncle is now 97 ,I think built a dam in his home state, way back in the 1960’s or something, he retired as a Chief Engineer , and is highly respected even to this day for his productivity and his integrity, he was not corrupt .

The main dam holds 25 million cubic meters of water (the other dam doesn't count, only 1 million to catch water for local agriculture.) At least 200mm of water fell in the region. Spread that out over 125 square kilometers and you have 25 million cubic meters of water. The drainage area for the Wadi (which means dry river) is more than the needed 12.5x10 kilometers. This is not a tragedy caused by a failed dam or lack of preparedness, but of unprecedented rainfall. Hmm... why does this sound familiar?
