The Taliban always had sympathizers/members within the Afghan government and armed forces. So, a Taliban take over was assured once America left. The only question was how quickly it would happen.
@Valyssi3 жыл бұрын
It didn't even need sympathisers, mere apathy was enough. The Afghan army knew it had more to fear from the Taliban if they resisted, than it would have to fear from its own government if it deserted (after all, the Afghan government and a lot of generals fled the country). Any convictions they might have held aside, the only logical thing for them to do in that situation was surrender and ensure their own safety. America either greatly underestimated the importance of morale in war (which I doubt since they have plenty of experience with war) or straight up didn't care

When they say that billions of dollars was spent on military equipment, it would be interesting to see what it was spent on and where it went. We shouldn't forget that the Pentagon has never passed an audit. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that equipment that was officially sold to the Afghan government was never even manufactured, let alone sent to Afghanistan.

No... the Taliban did not seize that many aircraft. Yes a few aircraft were left by fleeing Afghan forces. The vast majority of airworthy craft were flown out with much of the older equipment the Afghan Security forces had. Yes it is also true some Afghan Security forces defected and handed over the aircraft and the equipment they were supposed to fly out. However we've remotely disabled these craft and some equipment. Sure, they'll figure out how to bypass some of our disabling measures. But you're grossly over exaggerating the situation. As for the billions in military supplies and equipment. Much of it was over valued hand-me-downs. Additionally there is a lot of corruption we had to deal with and to some extent allow for fear of losing the few ranking memebers of the Afghan Security forces. Yes! It was a struggle just to find a few competent men to hold high ranking positions. Many were corrupt but all we had to work with. There came a point in 2011 when we could no longer choose to weed out the bad ones if we were to ever leave. Remember, we did this. We overthrew the Taliban government. We had to at least give the appearance of a functioning Afghan Security force in order to leave. Few men signed on to join the force. At which point we began accepting "former" Taliban members. Desertion and drug use among the Afghan Security forces was rampant. They simply couldn't rise up to the level required to secure the country. We tried for almost eight year to play a supporting role. So when they appeared at to look organized and capable we took off. In reality we needed to stay on with a skeletal crew to feed intelligence and advise like we continue to do in many countries across the world. The Afghan Security forces simply lacked organization, professionalism, and integrity. Few were willing to listen or learn how to be soldiers. They would played solider, particularly for news cameras... but in reality most smoked pot, others used heroine, and refused to take the job seriously. The vast majority thought our being there would be indefinite. When we did leave desertion, disarray, plundering of equipment and supplies, and tanking morale soared. It was too late for us to stop. We were already speeding down the runway.

Looks to me like the USA did what they planned to do. Take out Osama and train Afghanistan to be a better Afghanistan. Who is to blame if the Afghanistan troops preferred taking drugs during training instead of paying attention. We did not lose. Afghanistan lost to Afghanistan.
@itsourlife3 жыл бұрын
@@julesybethmedlini That's very simplistic. This is intelligence failure not only on part of USA but every other country in the world. Without existing situation it's impossible for a 9 day literally bloodless takeover. 20 years and they don't even know what's going on? Shameful. Shows downfall of the west if it could not judge.
@julesybethmedlini3 жыл бұрын
@@itsourlife sometimes the simplest thing is the truth. 20 years and billions spent. We did more than our part. Easy to blame the entire world, but where does this get us? Have you not seen, we more than knew what was going on. Biden was advised. He chose to believe in the Afghan troops. What happens after a country is left on its own is up to said country. Obviously we have two sides to the political culture here. I am neither. I believe in views of both. Democrats aren’t usually that in favor of money spent on military overseas. However if push comes to shove; unfortunately we will return. Trump was in favor of the withdrawal as well; but he probably would have started the war that ends all wars if you even think about rubbing him the wrong way. Very easy for us to debate this topic but what else is the answer? I don’t have it. Our other alternative which is impossible is Trump and his plan- Now if Biden administered Trumps plan- with conditions. Would the Taliban have listened? Who knows, I happen to believe they would not have listened. If Trump was the President - would they have listened. ? I bet to an extent they would have but secretly plotting otherwise. Which just prolongs the inevitable.
@itsourlife3 жыл бұрын
@@julesybethmedlini Look I am more concerned about the intelligence failure on ground that the two political sides and thier decisions. Trump is not the President so he escaped all the troubles with such tough decisions. Having said that I firmly believe he would have listened to intelligence reports about the situation on the ground. Remember the last minute withdrawal from engagement with Iranians? We all thought this was it. Better sense prevailes or rather he read the intelligence reports right and acted accordingly. Either way I am as shocked today as I was on the morning of 9.11.2001. How does the most powerful country make such mistakes and miscalculate such events. Even the best intelligence report gave 90 days to Taliban where it just took 9. This is not right.

They will want, music, education, art, technology, TV, equality etc. Everything they're used to and are about to lose. The youth will prevail eventually because it will be intolerable otherwise. This is really a good lesson to any superpower, that no nation can impose their will or try to teach another how to behave or live. Culture and religion are very tricky things, the US and West should focus their energy to the like minded countries in the developing world, at least those countries that have similar/close beliefs and lifestyle - but yet again and I dont think the west want to help anyone, because there are some people and countries in Africa, Asia and south America that would have good governance and democracy if the West genuinely give them the chance.
@Dj-sy4kj3 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right. I personally feel every country is culturally and economically evolving. When the country reaches certain level of economic sustainability, its education system improves, its life style changes, access to smartphones and internet will start changing the way people think. Once that happens, the whole population would have moved on from the medieval mindset and eventually democracy prevails in such society. US should stop funding wars to bring democracy in the countries where the mindset of the population is still medieval.

@Sipho Thenjwayo if it was any other country outside of the west were to be in the same position. Would they build roads and bridges? Fund education... ? then give it all back to the country and walk away? No, most countries would take over and keep all resources. So don't paint the west as the same evil it was in the past. There has been greater evils, but the west decided that it can't just conquer and exploit anymore. It is better to have peaceful trading partners so everyone can prosper.
