It's been four months since the Taliban swept to power in Afghanistan, something they did faster than anyone anticipated. Since August, they have had to make a rapid transition to running the day-to-day business of a struggling state. From Kabul to the Taliban stronghold of Kandahar and the mountainous Wardak province, our team have witnessed the grim reality of Taliban rule. FRANCE 24's senior reporters Catherine Norris Trent and Roméo Langlois bring us this exclusive full-length documentary.

Follow the language. There are 2 main languages in Afghanistan - Pashto and Persian (Dari). whenever you hear complains in the documentary - their main language is Persian. whoever praises Taliban - they speak Pashtu. This is what missing in this documentary. To understand the conflict, you need to go back in history and understand how these 2 factions came to be. My father is Pashtun and tells me all the stories about the reality of the situation which is absent in almost all documentaries available to date... in short, these 2 factions will never see a mutual ground until one control's the other.

They aren’t grateful though. It’s sad in 20 years they didn’t want to listen and do better thinking US and NATO was going to be there forever. I was one of the last to leave. Afghans that worked for me still writing me trying to leave. I only helped those that worked hard and I know they would work hard in the states. After 20 years of giving them money they have nothing to show for it. Training wasted for nothing. Sorry my rant is over.

I think they did a better job than many of these documentaries with the identity protection. they mostly showed individuals who very deliberately decided to be on camera, and I think therefular people just moderately speaking theirminda will be ok. the taliban are not strictly forcing people to pretend that everything is fine. if the taliban give journalists permission to film, I don't think that they will then punish people merely for talking to the journalists.

@@PARCE93 The pride is the same, but the assumption of significance in the other's perspective is not. He's all "perhaps you've heard of my brother" while his buddy swipes through his phone ("we do still have a photo of him, don't we?"). Fine to be proud of one's martial victories -- the ignorance of the world is the difference. Put it another way, he's never left Afghanistan and it shows. If you watch it again, you can see in his eyes that he's aware of this at some level... I assume the French crew didn't react the way he expected or hoped. Plus, it's just tacky to do what he's doing and illustrates how small and pathetic the Taliban are. Big honchos in Afghanistan once more, slapping people around and crushing young girls' dreams (mothers selling their babies!). Meanwhile, representatives beg the outside world for validation and cash because they can't deliver. That disconnect is the "limited horizon" I'm referring to, and this moment with him is just one example.

It's quite interesting to see a wider range of stories, rather than those pushed only by either side. At least they do accept their past and try change it. We hope for a better future for the country.

Watching a history of the country, the different groups who have ruled Afghanistan are in the number 20+ range. I was trying to understand who the "real" or "first" Afghans were. Depends on who you ask I'm afraid.

I've seen documentaries talk about Afghanistan's borders being a construct of westerners with artificial boundaries that group together people who have almost nothing in common except religion. I'm not sure what the truth is but they speak multiple languages and have very different customs depending where you go.

This documentary is missing a critical component. ALL of the extremist positions are from Pashtuns. The Persian speakers All talk about more progressive principles or have real social complaints. This must be mentioned and the role of it

They were going to school before the unfairly elected biden administration made a complete blunder of this. See what happens when weak men get into power, no more school for women. How about ask the people that suffer who they wanted there in country? Many people the victims of bad evil governments around the world prefer the imperfect US although far better than there own leaders.
