Kashmir elections: How unemployment is driving educated youth to desperation | BBC News India

Assembly elections are taking place in Indian-administered Kashmir after a decade. A lot has happened in those years. Article 370 was abrogated, which allowed the state to have its own constitution, a separate flag and freedom to make its own laws. This was something that did not go down well with the people, but they were promised a boost in economy and jobs. As we dive into these elections, the BBC's Antariksh Jain asked the people, especially the youth, what their biggest issues are.

I cannot understand the logic of how they have become unemployed because 370 is removed. Because of 370 removed more people can go to colleges and get education. Unemployment is there everywhere in India and it is not unique to Kashmir but I agree private sector jobs are less in Kashmir. Who is to be blamed for that. It is because Private sector would take some time to realize that Kashmir is peaceful and once things are fine jobs will emerge. The real culprit is Hurriyat and ISIS because of which terrorism was there and people and private sector have a fear for investing heavily in Kashmir. If Kashmir remains peaceful and accommodate other Indians as one among them then things will change. Goa , Hyderabad, Sikkim, Arunachal etc joined India after independence and they integrated well.

After abrogation the reservation has been increased to nearly 70% which is simply unconstitutional. Everywhere else there is a cap on reservation at 50% but not here. Its also known that here more population belongs to general category still have they done it for appeasement politics, vote bank.

This is an Indian problem with 370 or without 370 unemployment is everywhere in India.. I come from state of Kerala the most educated state with very good English and computer skills here the unemployment is very VERY VERY very high even with a stable government,peaceful atmosphere,liberal multicultural society and pleasant climate but no job if you are lucky you will get a government job.. there is not even one person in my town who studied with me everyone is somewhere living as refugees 😅😅how can you expect modi to provide jobs that too in a difficult place like Kashmir

For four years there was halt in recruitment. Posts were advertised and withdrawn many times. I paid thrice for one post even my fees was not refunded after the posts were withdrawn. Similarly contractual lecturers at +2 level and in colleges have been rendered jobless even after serving the department for 10 to 20 years. Now thousands of Ph D, NET/SET holders are running from pillar to post to get a job so that they can earn their livelihood. Most of them have crossed their upper Age limit. Many of them got court orders as Apex Court of India settled the issue of replacing temporary employees with similar arrangement but in J and K that too has no worth. Equal work and equal pay (Supreme Court Ruling) is thrown in dust bin. Those who worked in these schools and colleges are sitting idle at home. BJP claims that they recruited 30000 youth then why unemployment is on rise and why those thousands of contractual teachers are sitting at home. BJP destroyed our economy, wasted our human resource and took our right to have our own State. They give figures as PM Modi gave a+b ka whole square.

The GOI with the help of LG administration is replacing Kashmiri Civil Society by the method of giving reservation to the Majority of Jammu (except mainland Jammu). The entire population of Pir Panchaal Valley is under reservation. Shame to the deep Pockets of BJP who think they will replace us, but they forget the Allama Iqbal's reference of Kashmir as "Little Iran." We are seeds when burried we will rise. Preservation of article 370 is preserving Islamic separatism the indigenous Kashmiri Hindus were violently thrown out of their ancestral lands and properties and forced into exile by Muslims in Kashmir and that is the reason for darkness in Jammu and Kashmir. If it was the incorporated on temporary basis in the constitution of India then what was the rationale behind it's incorporation in the constitution of India at the time of accession? I think there was any other logic behind its temporary status. The contextual history needs to be studied very carefully in this matter. I am from Kashmir and i know my society. How educated youth are, is at another level! But due to lack of knowledge about job finding is pain in the ass. I know not a lot of people can afford to go outside state but guys trust me money is following outside state! Just take this step don't fckn waste your career. And fckn institution like KU abd other universities won't tell how to proceed for a job after grad or pg.
