In the Sporting Poetry round, Rory said Jonah Lomu was soft, which Chris Eubank countered by saying he wasn't. Rory then said "he's a poof", to which Chris responds "but he's a _big_ poof". This led Nick to insist that it was now on record that Chris Eubank thought Jonah Lomu was "a big poof".

One of the best TV moments of all time. What the clip doesn’t show are the comments Chris Eubank had been making about him earlier in the program, which was one of the reasons for the crowd reaction when the great man came on, the other reason of course was the genuine respect for a great, humble, respectful human being who unfortunately left us too soon.

In the Sporting Poetry round just prior to Feel the Sportsman, Rory said Jonah Lomu was soft, which Chris Eubank countered by saying he wasn't. Rory then said "He's a poof", to which Chris responds "Yes, but he's a _big_ poof". This led Nick to insist that it was now on record that Chris Eubank said Jonah Lomu was "a big poof". That's why after Jonah comes on stage to that huge reaction, Nick says "Well, that was pleasure itself!"

I remember playing in a regional sevens tournament in NZ in 1991. All the players were senior players with an average age of probably 23 to 25. There was a whisper going through the whole tournament about this freak schoolkid dominating everyone, yep it was a 16 year old schoolboy Jonah Lomu.

@anononomous
@anononomous 14 жыл бұрын
I suppose even though he was already a Z list celebrity in those days, Eubank would secretly fancy his chances of dropping him if he managed to get a decent punch in. He's much smaller, but still, he was the best middle weigh boxer in the world for quite a while.
@lutonmale1983
@lutonmale1983 11 жыл бұрын
No it's not end of story- You have to remember that Eubank was a super-middleweight boxer, whereas Lomu would defintely be classed as a super-heavyweight. Furthermore, reading about Lomu's background, I'm sure he can throw as well as take a punch! In alliance to this, what would further tip the odds in Lomu's favour would be if it was an MMA type of fight.

To those saying Lomu would kill Eubank, okay Lomu is a walking bear, but Eubank is a trained fighter whose profession was to go and knock people out. Trained fighter vs anyone else = win for trained fighter. Either way Lomu is a legend, the best ever, to call him a poof is a pretty poofy comment.
@JungleTunes94
@JungleTunes94 9 жыл бұрын
If I remember right there was something more to this hence the reaction. Eubank had called Lomu a poof or something. Ofcourse he was joking and Eubanks rants are legendary but that might explain the reaction of the audience.

Got to say, in New Zealand, someone always, always had a chip on their shoulder about JL. In the UK where I now live, EVERYONE loves him, at my work, no one knew rugby, they knew him, his role with Heiniken was a great example of a world brand using him to be their ambassador and boy was he in big demand here. I think its just human nature. The royal family are despised in Britain, in NZ they are loved as rulers, higher class then the public and so on.
