My sister has this, has since she was born, she’s 28 this January 7th. She had a tracheostomy to have permanent assistive breathing put into place December 2nd, don’t know how long she’ll live but each day is a blessing. Thanks for all the love, didn’t expect this to blow up.

it's a pretty big deal.. If he's ever alone, without someone who knows the severity of his condition and he gets knocked unconscious, he'll probably suffocate to death. A minor car accident that leaves him unconscious could end him.

mikokuijn Sleep apnea is a much briefer interruption and the body’s reflexes catch that the apnea is happening and make you wake up to get a breath (which is why people with sleep apnea sleep poorly and feel tired during the day). In Liam’s case, said reflex does not exist at all. The body doesn’t catch that breathing has stopped when he sleeps, and won’t wake him to take a breath.

Elizabeth Ferguson hi, yes it was very hard in the beginning, I didn’t even knew anything about a “trach” to be honest I didn’t know what was it , i had never seen one or someone with one . I was terrified to bring him home i used to think he was gonna die cause i had no experience with any ventilator or how to change his trach or anything else . But thank god he had this amazing respiratory therapist that showed us everything we needed, and now my som is more stable , he’s just like any other lil kid plays runs very active . we just need to watch him not to fall asleep without his ventilator.

the reason why he has lived so much longer than the 6 month he was given is because of his parents. Im guessing with a condition like this they give 6 months because it only takes one mistake, one lapse of judgement etc to have it go bad. however props to the parents for keeping up that level of care and attention to detail to keep him alive.

TheConTraDemOn People with disabilities can do thousands of different jobs. Most don't have the attention span to sit in a room and solve intellectual problems all day, but heck, I don't either. Often times, schooling and job training for these types of people are modified. He might not get there exactly the way your average engineer would, but he can still get there and could lead a fulfilling and inventive life as an engineer. Also, what exactly is surprising about Amanda being an engineer? You don't know her.

I took no offense to that, people don't tend to think that a beauty youtube will be in a field such as engineering, I get surprised reactions all the time. The curriculum could be hard for him as even the best students struggle, but if it's something he naturally is predisposed to through building leggos all the time he may be able to be successful especially through a more spread out or non traditional program. That is, if that's something he'd have a desire to pursue at all :)

It's quite nerve-wracking at first. After several years, I look at it the same as the danger of crossing the street without looking. I just have to NEVER forget to use my machine, and can never stay anywhere overnight without it. Mine's not the same diagnosis as Liam's, but my brain does stop me breathing every 45 seconds on average while I sleep due to central sleep apnea -- not the snoring kind. Most folks don't realize there are 2 kinds of apnea; I didn't.

Seeing Liam makes me really realize how selfish people are. Like, in regards to the pandemic. So many people complain about having to wear a mask and social distance, as if it's the hardest thing in their life. While Liam has to suffer like this everyday. Not knowing if he will wake up each day. He has to go through so much every day, as have his parents. Who've never gotten proper rest because they're so worried about him every day. Waking up is a privilege. Knowing we're healthy enough to wake up every day is a privilege. We should make a healthier world for people like Liam. One this title is misleading NO ONE can survive if they cant sleep NO ONE. Two Life is not precious you fool. Only a brainwashed person would say so. Three. highlyanticipated is not wrong. This boy will commit sucuide at some point once his parents look away long enough because HE sees them too you know. The hardest thing in life is not you but the people around you suffering. IF your the cause of that suffering you will be tempted so much more then you think. Four: Best chance for this kid to stay healthy mentally is to be with others that are different as-well because we are all programed to find similarity among each other. Last. Reporting someone for texting something you don't like proves your weaker then this boy here and quite frankly should of DIED as well. BEGRATEFUL to the system that keeps you alive weakling.

my dad has the exact same condition, he has to wear a mask when he sleeps, yet if he sleeps he has a 87% chance on dying and he has had this condition since he was 14, he’s now 43, he has slept without his ventilator before, and has survived.
