The way connell held marianne’s hand when she was reaching for her drink was so perfect

I totally agree; it's magic isn't it? I find it absolutely extraordinary that Tom Varey [Daisy E-J supposed wimp of a boyfriend and an awful actor besides…see ’G of Thrones’] won’t watch the intimate love scenes between Marianne and Connell in Normal People. Does he believe Daisy to be his own private property? He should be immensely proud, as she is, that the intimate scenes were so incredibly beautiful and performed exquisitely. They actually make one feel as if you are intruding into their private world as they express their love to one another. Daisy is a beautiful women and my only disappointment is that she didn’t get an Emmy for her amazing performance. Varey, you are an immature idiot. I suggest you find another job and I suggest that you Daisy, find a better boyfriend.

@@morse1883 I don't believe that him not wanting to watch his girlfriend have extremely intimate sex with another man implies that he think she's his property. It would make a lot of men uncomfortable. He said he found the series 'very beautiful' though and I assume he is "immensely proud".

That hug she gave her when they arrived. When my parents got divorced my mom was pretty much out of my life. Hugs like that from people who were like mother figures to me meant everything. It made me feel like people still were looking out for me. I feel like with Marianne that’s something she never got from her own mom.

It's extremely telling that Marianne feels more welcomed at Connell and Lorraine's house, than with her emotionally abusive brother and distant mother. Just goes to show that sometimes, family isn't who you're related to, but who you choose to have in your life. 🎄🎁❤️

Happens quite a lot, I think. You don’t choose your family. You’d think sharing DNA would inextricably draw you together for life, but often it doesn’t. I love my family, but family can be overrated. Family is a certain kind of love, but for some individuals it is a flightless love without wings-perhaps even mercurial and uninspired. One can’t always be themself. It sounds so counter-intuitive, but there’s an anonymity that comes with relationships outside mi familia. Think how often family makes one hurt or unhappy. Makes one flee or become distant? How family can destroy one’s spirit, only to reinstate a kind of pseudo equilibrium later-but you may never feel on solid footing again, or sorted. The sort of cognitive dissonance and insecurity we find ourselves in as children may never leave us as adults. Some of us are lifers in this regard. The power family has over ones’ sense of self and ones’ future self. Families are high-risk. They shouldn’t be, but they are for many people. It’s a roll of the dice. A crap-shoot. Choice is the operative word. Choice is our only way out. We choose friends, compatriots, lovers and so forth. The energies people share outside familia can be extraordinary. Primal. Spirits drawn to one another by choice and not merely thrown together. There’s something liberating about finding meaningful connection with someone outside your familial purview. I can be who I am now. I’m not implicated in prior histories of who I was thought to be. Families can hold the memory of you in perpetuity. They may not see you in evolution, but in stasis. The most compelling relationships I’ve had in my life have been with people with whom I’ve shared an emotional or spiritual understanding. It was very much like “oh, there you are my friend. I turned over this (random) rock, and f@ck- there you are!” I love that we all can make meaning in our lives. That we may create our bonds, even when born into a family that would not have us. Love to you all.

@@katebadley5464 sadly enough, we don't choose the ones we fall in love with. I speak about love as a feeling. I also believe that loving somebody, I mean not only speaking the words of love, but proving it with actions, is a choice

The scene that really kills me is after this one, where Lorraine, Connell, and Marianne go shopping and as they walk back to the car with bags of goods they bumped into Marianne's mother. She tries to ignore them but Lorraine says Happy New Year to her...and she just keeps walking without saying a word back, not even a hello to her daughter. That was so devastating. I can't imagine my mother or any family member or friend ever doing that to me. Poor Marianne at least found a new family in Connell and Lorraine. I think they love her more than her own mother ever did.
@Circa16282 жыл бұрын
But it does seem on point. Her emotionally distant Mother sees her daugther having a family moment with another family. It was awkward and gut wrenching. But it would be outside the box for her to what?..start screaming, start demanding answers, start apologizing to Marianne. No, her mother just walks away, pretending its not happening, like she pretends alot of things were not happening in her household

Even though this is one of the best shows I've ever seen, saying nothing comes close is just not true. You just haven't watched many other things then. Watch Six Feet Under. Best show ever made. By the end of it you be emotionally destroyed like you've never been in your life. Emotional depth of that show is out of this world and last few episodes and especially the last 10 minutes are the best ending ever in any show. Even years after watching it it's in my mind and I don't think anything will ever beat it for me. There would be some parts of the show, especially towards the end where I would just explode into crying, can't hold it and can't stop it. Whoever watched it knows what I'm talking about and I have yet to see one person who watched it and didn't feel the same way about it. It's a must watch if you like real life character focus drama.
