My university is struggling with how to deal with it. Online submissions are making it incredibly hard to track. What we have done, as professors, is change how we assess students. Multiple smaller assignments, worth lower amounts, and ones that require personal experience input from the students, are a couple ways that some of this type of cheating can be addressed. It is also very important to stress to the students that they can come to us if they need help and/or an extension. Many don’t know that they can be held ‘ransom’ by these services. It is scary and truly an unnecessary service. We need to be accountable for our own work and learn from our struggles and mistakes if we wish to truly succeed.

I definitely agree with incorporating smaller assessments. But yes, I think the most important strategy is reiterating to students that they can approach their faculties for help. University policies can alienate students - like the one in this docu. Student feel they can't ask for and get help in honest circumstances, which leads to dishonesty - the antithesis of the values universities should be encouraging. That breakdown of trust has become systemic, which explains why services like these are so prevalent.

Don't you think professors (lecturers) care a great deal about their students, including doing their best to help and support the ones who want to succeed? Part of their duty is also ensuring that the students who work hard are not disadvantaged against those who take short cuts.

I'm sure there are students using this service in order to avoid their responsibilities. I'm equally sure that there are students who seek these services as a last resort. Students with a mind to cheat will always find a way. Finding ways to detect this is of course, important. What I'm suggesting is that we need to change the university systems and policies which encourage students who wouldn't ordinarily seek to cheat, from approaching these sorts of services.

He just chose to party with his mates in London instead of being responsible. He lost over £400 and is in debt in the thousands, serves him right sadly. If you ask someone to write your essay you also need to make sure that it hasn't been posted anywhere on the net and that they're not writing the same essay for other students on your course. You also need to make sure it's gonna be good. And read through it changing wording and trying to improve it as you go. Basically if you're gonna cheat you need to know how they catch the cheats and you also need to hand in a good finished product. Otherwise what's the point.

What most students don't realise is that they can use a proofreading company to polish their essay or dissertation - without having to resort to cheating by using essay writers. Everything about university has become a joke, not only in this documentary but the system itself. Degrees are watered down, standards are lowered so absolutely every one can get in. @Jane Lawson The level of motivation and responsibility required to do an essay on time or within the late hand-in period really isn't that high; it's a bit insulting to 18 year olds to suggest that most of them lack it. You don't need to be your 'best self' to sit down and bang out an essay. I fucked about a lot in my first year and didn't miss one (although I was close a lot of the time), neither did any of my mates, and none of us are exactly exemplary students. It ain't hard, nobody likes doing them but you've just got to suck up and get it done. The attitude of someone that buys essays isn't going to hold up well in 3 short years when they have a job.

What I'm trying to say is that some young people will struggle with time management skills in their early adult life, and having a judgmental "suck it up" attitude doesn't help people develop them. I was doing a postgrad last year, a nigerian student in our class spoke very broken english and was not the sharpest tool in the box. but somehow he kept getting almost 100% on all his essays and courseworks. i later found out that he was using a content writer back in his home town to do his course work and his dissertation for him. and as for the exams, he simply downloaded all the previous exams papers and memorised the answers for all the common repeated questions. So yeah, with these services you can breeze through university and even get a distinction masters degree with little to no effort.

I'm in my first year of A Levels. I did 1800 words for my last philosophy exam which took about 4 or 5 hours to complete. I know it isn't at the same level as a uni essay but 3 days for 2000 words isn't hard if you just sit down and do it.

CRINGE lol there's no honour in wasting hours of your life writing essays of which you won't be able to recall their subject matter within 2 years, most degrees are arbitrary, employers want to see if you can handle doing tasks you hate for extended periods of time to a regulated degree of quality, which is what you do once you start working for this ensues for the following 50 years or so, I know some people like their jobs of course but a lot of people tolerate them, which is what you learn to do at university through assignments. I write essay for money and it's surprisingly easy to write an essay on a topic you've never studied. It shows how little is actually learned at university when you can write a first class essay using a couple of lecture notes and google books. I don't have access to a university library, don't have any expensive textbooks and have often never studied the subject that I'm writing on yet get feedback from clients that they received high grades and ask me to write their next paper for them.

Totally disgraceful. If students are not capable of writing their own essays then they shouldn't be at university in the first place. Academia is not for them. Simple as that. Totally unfair that these crooks could get job advantages above honest graduates with their false qualifications. A very scary prospect if they later go on to have careers with responsibility such as in medicine or primary education. Students caught using these services should be thrown out of university forever with no course refund and prosecuted if they have secured employment through deception .
