@@wanjikukagira6692 it's about time Africans stopped getting offended by people talking about their accent. It's nothing bad; any person in a foreign country/region will sound different to the natives. I switched from a dogmatic critic of this queen to an avid reader of her books and loyal admirer. Initially, I believed what "some people" thought about her: that "she is a dangerous rebel in the thick cultural subjugation of women in Nigeria, that she will turn women's head into fighting for what was not there's to have in the first place, that she's a critic of the Catholic church, etc etc". I believed "these people" then but thank goodness I sought the truth for myself. I delved into reading her books, gulping down pages and pages and tearing down the fat scales my eyes had been blinded with. I listened to her talks, interviews, the recent phenomenal speech at the Humboldt Forum, and now this video... I'm short of words at Chimamanda's intelligence, composure, diction, and salty-calm humor that disarms even the meanest critic. Thank you Chimamanda for who you are and what you are to the world, and to us Nigerian women!

Amen, as soon as I raise my voice, my husband labeled me as verbally abusive and overreacting, just because I was challenging him about being present at home and responsible and because he was irresponsible in a quiet and manipulative and I was outspoken. "The goal of feminism is to make itself redundant." "Men and women are not the same." These two statements speak to Chimamanda's type of feminism. Anyone with legitimate criticism of feminism ought to make a distinction between Chimamanda (& people like her) and the rest of the people they criticise. There's so much nuance, so much reason and intelligence in what she says.

I adore the way she speaks so eloquently. I 100% agree with her stance on trans issues. In my culture, trans people have existed throughout history and mythology, and have in recent years been legally recognized as the third gender i.e a class of their own. So I often wonder if the "trans women are women" line of thought exists in the West solely because of the absence of trans people in the public eye throughout their cultural history.

Yep, this is true for most of the Indian subcontinent. I have read Pakistan issued passports with a transgender category around five yrs ago. We should be taking note. It's disingenuous to suggest trans women are point blank 'women'. They are 'trans women'; they have different lived experiences, biology, socialisation, etc. But like you said, trans people have been part of the fabric of society for generations in India, which likely plays into why a third gender category is more easily accepted.

I admire her poise. The way she gracefully answers the questions without raising her voice, being confrontational, or verbally abusive just facts, originality and plenty of insights should be studied 💯

As I watch this, my heart goes out to you over your grief. It's also brings to mind the Comfort God gives us that we'd meet our loved ones at His feet. The question in the middle of these all, is believe. If you believe, ma'am, you will find hope in this grieving period. I really pray God's comfort to you and your family.

I'm happy she talked about the trans language gatekeeping problem, like she said, we simply cannot pretend there are no differences, and that trans and cis people won't need different care. Of course trans women will have their own problems and issues that need to be talked about, but in terms of womanhood, they will never have a period, give birth, probably unlikely to have been catcalled or harassed by a man (before they transitioned), etc. etc.

There is one thing I disagree with here with my idol: framing this issue as politically left. Yes it does come from a group that has left ideas in American terms, but first, American Left is not Left. It's more what they call "progressive-liberal". Second, this is an issue that surpasses left-right dichotomy. I am a stark left, a total socialist, born and raised in Yugoslavia, and I am totally not on board with the this craze. I think of the issue word for word the same as Chimamanda. Except I don't frame it as left. When I was first shunned from the LGBT (after having been their not just supporter, but literal protector, houser, queen of the sorts) for saying we should not dismiss women like JKR but listen in good faith, I was called this TERF name, and also - a right winger! This still baffles me, and it came from people who were well aware of my stark left history. This speaks to what she was saying she is against, putting people in hegemonous groups. Most feminists who are gender-critical are Left. This is not a left-right issue, but it's easy to frame it as such.

She's right. It's a leftist issue but more of an extremist view. I always thought of myself as a leftist and was horrified to wake up to the tyranny of the left. Even feminism today has been pulled to such crazy extremes. That's not what I signed up for as a teen.

It is a far-left issue. Progressive liberals believe left is the correct direction but they don’t know where the end point should be and they only keep going left.

@@GreenDino-gj6vc I respectfully disagree, but not fully, I do agree to some extent. All the women I know who are on our side are very far left. The right approaches this issue mostly through actual transfobia followed by racism and all other isms, and I am not with it. Neither is any of us.

Thank you for protecting LGBT people in the past. You should continue. Listening to people is part of protection. Your story doesn't seem to suggest that you were protecting, rather that you were attacking. JKR has a stark record of transphobia. If you don't get that, you were not listening. and if being called a terf makes you stop support, then you have a fragile ego (case in point, imagine you're a man among feminists who gets called misogynistic for asking not to dismiss Trump for the statements he made about women). This things are not that hard, really.

@@arinzeagubalu6008 I simplified my story in orden not to ramble on forever. Trust me, I was there. I physically put my body on the line. And I always will continue to do so. But people who I literally died for dismissed me as right wing after knowing me for so long - nothing to do with my ego. All to do with either you blindly follow or you are our sworn enemy. I will always continue advocating for equal rights, love and respect of all of us, with all of our diversities. But I will not disregard biology. It’s simply there. And do you realize how you reacted just now to my comment? You don’t know me. Yet you insulted me at least twice in your reply. And this is the problem.
