Welcome to the 5th installment of Old School Badass Pedals! Today we look at an overlooked classic, the Sonic Stomp by BBE. While the rack unit this pedal was based on is generally dubbed superior, the pedal version still has a lot of practicality and usefulness! Even though it may not sound like it does much 😝 Hope ya dig it!!

I've been using the Sonic Stomp on a Marshall JVM 205H for 7 years now (for the past year on a Marshall Plexi 1987X), and it certainly adds "definition"/ "fidelity" to the mix.

How many JVM did you have to trade in to get a 1987X? I would rather have one 1987X than 100 JVM.s

@@michaelcraig9449 I didn’t trade one for the other. I’m big on 50 watt amps because of the early breakup of power tubes with minimal difference in max volume (vs a 100 watt). The JVM 205H is a wonderful and versatile amp. A year after buying it I upgraded with Mercury Magnetics input & output transformers, and added a choke. The two are different, but both are great...

Hey Matt. Nice to see someone else using this pedal. I have the rack unit , the stomp and the plugin of this. This is one of the old mystical sound enhancers from way back. Technically, it’s kind of an eq but, BBE’s explanation is that it corrects the timing of high and low frequencies as they are projected from your amp speaker. Apparently this is what causes muddiness as the input signal is translated to sound waves projected from the speaker. I know, right? Science! Anyway, it sure helps reduce the flubbiness ( scientific terminology) of my deluxe reverb. It’s been said it’s like taking a blanket off of your speaker. I have had people say how much better my guitar sounded in a live setting when I added it to my board. So I’m a Belieber. Peace out

Are there any differences in the sound between the rack unit and the pedal? I have both of them for sale in my city for the same price and i am not sure which one i should get.

VAL Schnitzel , I used the rack unit back when I had an effects loop running through a fender ultimate chorus amp .sounded great. I would suggest getting the pedal for putting in front of your amp unless you want to lug around a rack. I use the pedal at the end of my board in front of my 68 deluxe reissue and I think it sounds the same . Excellent that is! I hope it does what you want for your sound . Cheers!
