What's so weird is that I had the opposite thing happen. It was another reminder for me not to buy into the hype and marketing of things.

Preach! Everything you said is spot on. As a kid, I used to hide my opinions because I didn't want to get ridiculed for liking something dumb. Keep in mind, I was the youngest among my brothers and cousins so I felt ashamed to like things that were unabashedly "kiddie." When Last Action Hero came out in theaters I freakin loved it! But because of the reviews and everyone hating it, I had train myself to despise that movie otherwise I would feel dumb for liking a bad movie. I've grown far beyond that now. I only pay attention to reviews if I'm somewhat iffy. I usually go more in depth rather than just go by a number or letter score. What was good? What was bad? Sometimes what may be a negative to one person, maybe positive to another. I've seen reviewers criticize Wukong for being too linear but that sounds like a plus to me. I like open world games but not everything needs to open world. And glad you used TOTK as an example. Lately there's been a ton of negative discourse surrounding the game, saying it's really not that. Sure, there are valid criticisms but I don't care. It's my favorite Switch game and one of my favorite games ever! Probably right up there with Ocarina of Time.

I've had that feeling in the past 2 weeks after a week long break of, "Maybe this just isn't for me" with games and anime. Also in those 2 weeks I've started Doom Eternal and Vinland Saga. Anyone who has played or watched one of these knows that these are the perfect type of game/show to remind you of what you like. Their themes are unapologetically violent and badass. Most importantly this severed the connection between games I knew I had no interest in, and allowed me to listen to myself again. I can be confident in the fact that Ill never be unsure if the stuff I hid in my steam library was for me or not. On the flip side of game releases, Space Marine 2 has been flooding my feed I was already hyped for it by the time the first gameplay trailer dropped at the Xbox Games Show. My hype is very much there but I am not paying for early access despite everyone playing it right now. I also have stayed away from any reviews at all. I am very excited and I have 2 days off by happenstance to soak it all in.

I was a kid in the 90s and gaming was this huge enigma. Unless one of your friends had a subscription to a games magazine, there were so many surprise games and moments of joy. The world is different now, and better in many many ways, but don’t let trends take away your joy

One of the best things I've done recently is decouple myself from trying to keep up with a friend who has way more free time than me. We normally play games in coop, but his pace just makes it impossible to keep up even with Singleplayer games were both interested in. Over the years he's gotten more free time & I've gotten less. I wouldn't trade places completely but I'd really like to have some of the free time & energy that he has available to him & it kinda sucks. We both have played tons of games regularly our whole lives despite not meeting until our early 20s almost 20 years ago, but I had to take back gaming for myself vs being beholden to his time-line. He wasn't doing anything to pressure me outside of asking to always play coop games & my game time had now become mostly coop time, which is a choice I need to make to say no. Unfortunately I love coop games too, so it gets hard sometimes. My hope is that now that I've spent time organizing my life a bit ill be able to get back to playing more games & completing personal projects that hsve been on hold for way longer than I planned.

I have been trying really hard to do what you mentioned with totk for years. If I see a game I think I can really get into this. I immediately stop looking it up. Don't join the subs. Not watching update trailers. I find I have been enjoying a lot more game more frequently since I started doing this. Around 2015. Sometimes I'm still weak and watch development of games and joining the conversation. Often that's a conscious choice on games I know aren't super important to me. Edit: example, cyberpunk I played on launch on pc. I never sought out info or hype for the game leading up to release. I thought it was a middling 6-7/10. After a while I saw every one else saying it was 4-5. I won't deny it was very rough and not polished as much as it should have been.... but I didn't have a visceral hate towards it.

I’ve felt the same way for a long time. I remember when everyone was crazy over Skyrim, it was everywhere and no one spoke negatively about the game. I felt the hype and bought it ( pun intended). I remember starting the game, making my character and then being dumped into a world, that felt 2 dimensional, boring, dull color palette and very much lackluster. It don’t grab me at all. I thought for a long time that the problem must be with me, but I realized that this game simply wasn’t my genre. I played the Fallout games to death and loved them. I now play the games that I want to play, rather than the games that everyone else, tells me I should be playing.

Here's a tip I got that has been really helpful for me. Stop telling everyone else what you're doing. Obviously there's some people you need to share with, but every single coworker doesn't need to know what game you're playing or book you're reading or show you're watching or thing you're planning to do. Not even your friends need to know. I shared EVERYTHING and I found that it really just "transferred" my excitement for the thing to the person I was telling and next time I go to pick it up I'm not interested. Rinse and repeat. Once I stopped, the things I enjoy I enjoy simply because I do, not because I have 20 people to talk to about it. It actually increased my focus on completing said thing as well. Hope this helps!

I’ve long had a practice of not watching trailers for movies I know I am going to see so I don’t get anything spoiled for me. I want to go in as blind as possible. I think for games, it’s a bit different as it’s a larger investment both from a money and time perspective, but again if it’s a game I know I want to play, I’ll avoid internet discussions about it.

Unfortunately being mainly a PC Gamer i've slowly been drawn into social media over time and i've also noticed my mental health deteriorate quickly by doing so. Luckily i've catched myself before falling too deep and i wasn't even that deep since i was mainly just on youtube so no twitter, reddit or whatever. KZbin alone had a strong negative impact on me and i think because i've been so "detached" any small step into any direction can have a strong impact. I'm simply not able to handle "the noise" well which is why i've made the decision in the first place but i also saw so many people including my friends around me with their phones out half of the time and with time i just couldn't stand the sight of it anymore. But unfortnately not everyone can do that which is understandable we are human beings we do stuff subconsiously sometimes. Elden ring is a perfect example I'm not interested in any of the discussions online behind the game but one of my real life friends I asked him for his opinion on the expansion and he always goes back to the reviews, awards, online disscusions on it and I'm like okay thats cool but what is your opinion on it? I used to be very self conscious. I still am to some degree. Now that I’m in my 40s… I stopped caring. Firstly, the external world will NEVER validate you enough. You will never feel right until you learn to love yourself and be secure in that. No amount of degrees, no amount of friends, likes, sex or money will do that or prove it to you. You can only fool others that you have if they haven’t figured that out themselves yet. That’s why the world wants to shove some “identity” down your throat but it’s a false one based on superficial criteria - usually one that requires you to hold fast to some sense of victimhood. Sadly this world wants to deny us of the fact that no matter who you are, we are ALL divine image bearers who have the choice to become full fledged sons and daughters of God thru Christ, and rest secured in that divine nature/identity. They know it’s because that’s the only way. When you learn to truly believe that the ULTIMATE reality loved you first, and has the true opinion on who you are - that’s when something spectacular happens and this black hole 🕳️ that we try to fill with anything… everything… finally starts to shine with light ❤

Hey dragoon, from what I've seen, a lot of people get their self-worth and identity by going with the crowd and whoever makes the loudest noise. I think it comes from where we find our identity. For example, mine comes from my faith in Christ, so if my opinion goes against the loudest or most popular people, it doesn't really bother me like it did before hand. Just my thoughts

The mgs series is fantastic though and the one big exception to cutscene heavy games. I normally hate when there are a lot of cutscenes in games and indeed mgs can take the piss a bit but I get so obsorbed in the stories and characters ans voice acting and even the immersive camera work and music that it never bothers me in mgs.

If i did have one I wouldve burned out a long time ago. The hardest part in work for me is dealing with unfairness due to incompetent management. My workload has increased over the years and had new coworkers who just wouldn’t do their job and it would go unpunished. In the end their work ended up with me and hence the burn out. I already said no to many things, but going forward im going to say no way more. For my own health.

I think it’s a matter of time after being exposed to so much noise and misinformation from social media that people realize it’s not that valuable. Sure, some posts can be informative and help you formulate an opinion on something you’ve been debating, but; overall, it’s hard to tell which content is honest. It’s important to value what people think because it can help you grow if utilized correctly, but you need to be very careful what you listen to because of all the incorrect info out there. However, listening to everything and actioning all the notifications is exhausting and not worth doing. I deleted Instagram and TikTok because it brought 0 value to my life and literally wasted my time and I feel it was a great decision. My job doesn’t depend on keeping up with modern trends, though, and maybe as a content creator you kind of need to, depending on your material. Good luck man, sounds like you have a great mindset about how to treat social media and all its verbal diarrhea

I feel like this is just something that comes with age. I’m 37 now and when I was younger and almost up to my 30s I always just cared what everyone thought of me and when you hear stuff like this person doesn’t like you and blah blah it upset you and you would be like questioning why. As I got older though I stopped giving a shit and if someone said that to me I would just be like feelings mutual as it generally was lol. You just realize that people are going to like and not like you no matter what you do. Even if you’re too nice or whatever people will not like you for that so focus on the ones that are worth it and who cares about the rest.

I don't know how to feel about this. I started making game reviews because i loved the idea of sharing my opinion. But not that i realize, it can influence other people's opinions... I don't know how to feel.

I think it depends, its more about making sure you don't hate something just because someone else does but rather you hear what they say, think about it and form your own conclusion. Not something to hard for me, since I like to keep things as objective as possible mostly. So I tend to analyze the persons takes and say " hmm is this truly valid?" with the acolyte watched the first bit it instantly sucked imo and I dipped with the borderlands movie saw a channel review it and I agreed from what I already have seen and heard online that it was dogshit. so its valid to go with the mold sometimes but other times not so much, the same youtuber acted like the final shape sucked but it was a great Destiny expansion, and I didn't really mind most of it, loved it my first time through.

Agreed. It's never good to just go off a metacritic score, but rather to go off the specifics of each review. Plus we can watch gameplay now thanks to KZbin. I remember the days where we only had magazine screenshots to go off of. Certain games I'm buying no matter what. Other games, I'll wait until discount. But yeah, read up on the good and the bad and form your own choice conclusion.
