I will assume you can't be a judge until you have won a competition. Am I correct?

Actually, it is separate. You can either compete or judge, you don't have to compete to judge. There's actually there's a group of judges that travel the country judging.

I’m not KCBS but I am about to get certified by the Florida Barbecue Association. Per our rules, you don’t have to be a competitor to be a judge- you just have to attend a seminar like the one in the video. However, if you want to be a “Master Judge” (which I guess is like the guy leading the seminar and the people in charge of each judging table) you have to meet several criteria including judge 20 competitions in 5 years, and compete on a pro team at least once. BUT again, you don’t necessarily have to be a competitor to do that- there are teams that will let you volunteer alongside them for a day to help earn you that credit.
