Thanks. Another episode will upload tonight or in the morning. The next two are in high demand: collector and firebox/cc joinery.

Do you have any videos on the roller stands the tank and firebox sit on during the build? Top notch work there!

I have not done vidoes on those yet but thats a really good idea. I'm about to release a new door band roller video. I've designed a new model and will offer the kit for sale. At least for a limited time. You can see a few photos of it on my Facebook profile.

Hey, awesome videos. Should rename to “demystifying smokers”. Quick question, my tank (old air compressor tank just under 1/4” thick) has holes dead center on both heads. I plan to do do firebox mount a bit below center/grate level, how would you recommend doing the head repair?

How large are the holes? If they are two or three inches or less, I'd use a piece of 1/4" plate cut larger than your hole by about an inch all the way around. Heat the plate with a torch to glowing orange and shape it with a hammer to the approximate bowl shape that you're looking for. It will take a while to get it hot but it will get there. Then, trim it to size and pop it in the hole. Let it stand taller than your tank head. That will give you plenty of material to remove your hammer marks with a sanding disc (36 grit) and bring it down to a smooth transition. Hope that helps.

@@mysticsmokers3014 thanks for the advice, will do. Not at home but it can’t be more than 1-1.5”. Also, do you have any of your flat Abe rollers left? I didn’t see any on your website. I think you had also mentioned in a previous video Harbor Freight sells something similar but I can’t seem to find it.

@@johnmayberry9800 I designed and made this roller for the guys who are tired of trashing the Harbor freight versions. I am making several as we speak. Contact me via email at mysticsmokers@gmail.com and Ill give my phone number from there. I purposely haven't placed them on the website yet.

Is there a scrap tank you have that you could cut one large patch instead of several small patches? Just came over from your other channel. Now I’m binging 😂

That's a good question Jason. I really never cut a tank in a way that would generate scrap. As you see, I use the entire tank less the parts that come off for the collector or the firebox joinery. Those parts have compound curves to them and having come off the heads (end caps), they are usually thinner material as well. The reality of it is, its easier to roll and make patch material than it would be to keep a scrap a tank of each diameter. In addition, just like the Gnat project, the series is geared to help guys using tools and materials that the average home builder would have access to. As rare as these old tanks are getting, it would be a shame to cut one up. In fact, I sell patch material and door bands to guys who don't have access to a roller and dont want to purchase one yet.

@@mysticsmokers3014 Ahhh, I thought I heard you mention you had scrapped tanks in the past when the doors go sproing. What do you use for your firebox a tank or pipe? I don’t have access to casing pipe in my area so I am using half of a 60 gallon compressor for my 80 gallon build. I do agree with your use of Nomex. Do you have any issues with rain getting in past the seal when not in use? I never cover my grill and will probably never cover my smoker. Thanks for your reply!

@@jasond4084 Yeah, by scrap I mean scrap yard or give them away. I see what you mean though, pull a large chunk off to use. I could do that, but honestly, making them is still probably easier and quicker. I use pipe for fireboxes. 3/8" wall usually but sometimes 1/4" wall. I dont like going thinner. Rain will seep past the nomex over time but nothing like if you weren't using it. Keep everything oiled up good and allowed to drain. Also, if you notice water getting in, its better to leave the doors open for airflow. Mold will go crazy in there if not. Of course then you have mice. Toss up I guess.

Hard to understand why you don't use hearing protection. I now have hearing aids as a result of a lifetime spent in the shop with substandard or no hearing protection. Just a thought.

I do use hearing protection. In later videos, you will see that extensively. I also use a PAPR system for anything other than a very quick grind or weld.
