Additional Notes: - I just learned that the Franklin Pit's cost includes shipping, It cost me $500 to have the Goldee's smoker shipped to my house, so the price gap is closer. - Brisket cook will be out next week (So subscribe pls!) Hope you guys enjoyed this review, it feels good to be back at home cooking again. I haven't cooked in my backyard in almost 6 months! I'll be back on the road early next month shooting the next BBQ Story in NC, but it was nice to stop off at home and cook like the old days. If you guys enjoy this content, then please like, share it and subscribe! That way I know I should make more of these types of videos! BBQ Story featuring Bar-A-BBQ in Montgomery will come out first week of November, so stay tuned!

This is absolutely the best independent review of the Goldees pit! The is an evolutional step compared to conventional offset pits. Great coverage of pros and cons to allow people to decide if this is the one for them. I would think that if you are spending this amount of cash, there would be no reason not to go with the Goldees pit.

Interesting review. Although I have a good Shirley Fab offset, this was informative. Interestingly enough...you should give the Shirley Fabrication 94 gal traditional offset a look. It answers your every con and lower price point than the two you mentioned here. Been enjoying your channel's content for a few topics. Thanks for taking the time.

Great review and comparison video. Haven't used a smoker and your approach gives people the info they need to know about those smokers so they can make an informed decision. I understand more about an offset smoker now and some of their features. (build qualities) Finding out on your own is why people have had 8 different smokers (and not knowing how to use them or what they're good for) so I would love to see what's best for the novice that's not going to a competition on the weekends. To me from what I seen a cabinet smoker seems to be an easier pit to master but I haven't spent big money on a smoker yet so.. Nice video anyway, stay cool!

The first thing I noticed on that elbow joint from the firebox into the cook chamber was that there must be a tremendous heat loss making this too inefficient to run especially if it is used in the northern climates. Another potential issue is the pipe exhaust into the cook chamber is concentrated and could use a diffuser of some sort to tame temperatures spilling onto the grate. One could say you can wrap that elbow joint in an insulated fiberglass sleeve to preserve precious heat. Yes, unique design as a conversation piece however all the other traditional "tankers" do not employ that method for a reason I am sure. Love to hear your comments.
@frank_osuna

This design works amazingly well. Only thing that would make it better is rounded ends by the smoke stack and firebox by the elbows. That would help eliminate the hot spot in the cook chamber and allow better smoke travel up the elbow exchange. Great job showcasing it.

@@AntsBBQCookout Some smoke leakage isn’t a big deal at all. On my 1975, I close the stack damper 2/3 and it’s a huffing puffing machine with some smoke coming out the doors, grease drain, and firebox door. I feel like a lot of smokers are putting effort to redirect that front blast of hot air coming from the fire box recently. Makes me feel justified with my cheap Old Country smoker where I kept the baffle plate, but put a piece of foil a few inches after the baffle to ramp the air back up. I need to do a biscuit test at some point to see if it actually helped even the temps, or if it's just in my head...

I can't help but believe that there's a way to eliminate or almost eliminate the hot spot in front of the heat/smoke entry point but I'm not a smoker designer. Still, I would like to experiment with different entry baffle designs and possibly add pieces of steel/shields in other areas if needed to try to more even out the flow of heat at that point. I have a couple welders and metal cutting tools so this would probably be something I would attempt if I had one of these high end backyard smokers. If none of my attempts worked as hoped I could always cut out the added pieces and go back to the original design. I would look at it as a challenge since it seems to be one of those things that hasn't been perfected yet. Also, if I had the Goldee's smoker I'd cut the smoke stack at a reasonable height in order to push it into a storage place/garage and fabricate a hinge and weld it on so that the stack could be folded. Many welders are affordable these days and while the cheaper ones most likely couldn't weld 1/4 inch steel for structural purposes I'm sure they'd be plenty good enough to add the things I've mentioned. I'd also fabricate and add a shelf on the front while I was at it.
@AntsBBQCookout

This can easily extend into a very overly long winded reply! I am also in the process of rebuilding my burned out smoker. it's only 30ish years old and is pretty much burned out on the fire pit. I've seen the Goldeez and really like the concept. The one thing that really frustrates me is all of these smokers have the opening to the end on the right hand end. I am going to rotate my fire pit so the opening is to the front, and instead of using an elbow, I am making a rectangular duct, for the throat, from the fire pit into the cooking side. I do expect to need to install future deflectors, but I won't know for sure until I have my first fires. I will continue this later, "more on the news at 11:00".

I cooked with them side by side for an event last Tuesday. And it ran noticibly better. I think it's because of the stack, the stack is the same width but taller on the goldees so the draw is nuts. Even at 25% closed damper it was rolling beautifully. Holds temps way better too. I think people are gonna be blown away by the brisket cook that I'll post next week. This smoker is amazing, I love it.

You can run this pit like a Franklin. Just open the damper and the door. The design just gives you more capacity in that "golden convection space" in the cooker. It would just take way longer to cook since the heat would be rushing passed the brisket. The damper let's you keep the hot smoke in the cook chamber cooking it faster and giving you insane color. It's almost like turning it into a less hot version of a cabinet smoker if that makes sense.

Cool pit design and great review. But I don't think you're giving Aaron Franklin the credit he deserves for his design. He built it so that you can't (hopefully) screw up a cook by playing with the stack damper and the firebox door adjustments. Just maintain temps with good fire management, as Jeremy stated in his comparison video,. On my Moberg 250, the area closest to the firebox is the coolest area unless I crank it up to 300 -350 degrees to finish a cook or to smoke chicken. You (and others) should review the Moberg backyard pit. #gottagetamoberg.

I said those exact things in the video. It's a beginner friendly design. Just the franklin and the goldees are dummy proofed like that. It's a positive feature for beginners. I would love to man, I have no biases towards any smokers, I'd review them all if I had them.

Nice video as always Ant! And a great review of the pros and cons, thanks for that. What gives the Goldees more capacity than the TMG? The TMG cooking grate is 52”x27” where it looks like the Goldee is 50”x24”. Or are you doing something like factoring their hotspots into the equation? Either way, it seems like it’s probably close.

Thanks man! The TMG capacity was solely based on Mad Scientists comments in his review. Im guessing thats because of the hot spots? But I have seen the vollunteer in person at TMG, and that thing is a monster. It's noticeably bigger than the goldees pit if I remember correctly.

Nobody wants to mention the workhorse 1957 anymore. I watched Jeremy’s biscuit test. He never talked about how it was trying to maintain temp on each smoker. The price of these are extremely high. I enjoy the bbq I make with what I have. We all know. We want better. I don’t know. Does better justifies the cost?

1975 is a beast! at the price point for a traditional backyard offset i think its a no brainer buy a complete league in its own . but based on my cooks and what i share in the video, i think the goldee is a better design for a backyard offset. i'll see if i can borrow a 1975, would love to do an in depth review.

I am with you on that, the weber kettle is all I have and I use wood chunks for smoke flavor, the food always turns out great. I am single so its usually just me but I can do a 17 pound brisket or 2 racks of ribs and its the perfect size for me or if I invite a few friiends over.
