Module 11 of the Behaviour Change Intervention Ontology (BCIO) online training programme aims to provide an overview of Basic Formal Ontology (BFO). This is the upper level ontology that the BCIO comes under. It is a small ontology that describes in the most general terms things in the world. It is widely used in bioscience and social sciences, which means that the BCIO can be used with other ontologies such as CHEBI (covering drugs and related chemicals), the Gene Ontology (covering a large section of biology), the Mental Functioning ontology, AddictO (covering addiction-related constructs) and OMRSE covering socially relevant constructs.
The module consists of a 30-minute video that takes the form of a conversation between Robert West and Janna Hastings.
This module covers the classes in BFO, not the relations or properties. These will be covered in another module.
