LifeisLikeSailing - Vancouver, BC Sorry to hear and see your disappointment on the workmanship. It does look much better now! I try to do as much as possible on my boat as well but one thing that I am having a hard time finding here is a boat yard that will ALLOW me to work on my boat while its on the hard. Everything has got to be done by employees of the boatyard. I can't even do the bottom pain and have to hire it out. I am going to keep looking but so far no luck. Thanks for sharing.

I have heard about yards like that so I feel pretty lucky that I can work on the boat myself here! I hope you find a place you can do the work yourself!!

It's a shame that most people hired do not dedicate themselves to provide quality work. In the boating maintenance industry, word of mouth is king, and I'm sure people like that do not get recommended. I'll be looking at some similar work by next year on my boat. I just happened to remove a Jabco head similar to yours to rebuild the hand pump, and I'm seriously considering a composting head and replace the holding tank with an extra fresh water tank on my E33. I'm currently at a marina in FL, but plan on being on anchorage by early next year, so the extra fresh water will come handy. I guess I missed out your haul out videos, so I'll be searching for them. Thanks for sharing!
@lifeislikesailing9 жыл бұрын
+javacup912 I agree that a composting head is probably the better route to go! Once I know for sure if this is the boat I will keep long term then I will likely make the change. Always nice to have lots of fresh water aboard! :)

Great video as usual!!!! The pride in workmanship is even worse down here in FL. They just want your money and then run. Atleast he came back out when it was leaking. Better then what some would do down here. Keep up the great work. Looking forward to the cruising videos.

Nice boat and good videos . There is no excuse for bad workmanship . The valve you have has a bolt on the side . Get spares as the tend to corrode away in time .. (I had this happen crossing the Atlantic). There should have been an absorbent washer / spacer between the nut and the hull . Keep videos coming . Great stuff.

Wow! That was a horrible install job. I put off installing our 5 thru hulls for months when we were on the hard. It seemed like the scariest job, but it ended up being pretty easy. After watching this, I'm glad I didn't have the yard do it. BTW, we are OCD with boat projects and that would have drove me nuts!

hello excellent videos! I'm wondering how you secured the base of the head-bolts or screws? if bolts how were you able to tighten the nut on if its solid underneath the head? thanks
@chrisjustiniano22549 жыл бұрын
Wow...sorry to see and hear that, Alfy. Is it normal to put that sealant on the threads of the sea-cocks? When I replaced mine ( i didnt change the thru-hulls), but only used tape-dope (teflon tape) on the threads and elbows. They don't leak, but I did put the sealant on the hoses where they connect to the fittings. I also replace the plumbing with the new white hoses like yours, and I also got a new jabsco, but the miniature one since my head is smaller (27ft boat). Its gonna be a mess when you have remove the sea-cocks for their inspections/maintenance. I was surprised to see the mechanic put the sealant on the outside fo the hull to where you wanted to epoxy. Well at least you have a nice new toilet and all new hoses and valves! Glad to hear you back on the water, though. I launched but pulled the boat out since the stuffing box started to leak. 1 drop every 5 seconds with no rotation of shaft, not a terrible leak and I tried to tighten it, but it didn't help. Since i do my own work, and it was the first time for me, I pulled the boat out to change the replace the old flax with new. I try again next thursday, so I hope my repair was good. Anyway, thanks again for your videos. It's awesome that you share this with us. Great to see other sailors and how they deal with issues and sailing. Take care, Alfy.
@lifeislikesailing9 жыл бұрын
justice tek I'm not sure if it is normal practice to put the sealant on the threads and I figured teflon tape would have been fine as well? Glad to hear your don't leak. :) That stuffing box sounds like it was leaking a bit too much so good you are going to re-stuff it and sounds like you are getting lots of things done on your boat! :)

Hi Alfy Another great video. I can only begin to imagine how disappointed you must have been in the shoddiness and neglectful manner that the work was carried out on your dollar. Have you remonstrated with this fella - he should at the very least pick up your haul out charge. Does he work for the yard maybe tackle them? Maybe naming and shaming so he gets no more work? Shocking shocking shocking. Just one other comment - I am not sure those hose clamps are best quality I was always told to avoid the perforated type.
@lifeislikesailing9 жыл бұрын
Norman Boyes Payment is in discussion still. He was open to renegotiating the bill especially after a $200+ extra haul out fee! I don't wan't to get into shaming someone, but I wanted to use this video to show everyone that in many cases you might as well just do the work yourself rather than throw money away on a final product that I would be ashamed to ask money for.

Alfy, I can realy understand that you are unhappy with that work! I replaced two through-hulls ( correct spelling there?) and valves, being a bit paranoid I did use a bit of sikaflex, but it still looked alot better then what was done on your boat! Been holding for two years now. Also, as you said in the vid, sikaflex is more a sealer than filler material, (even if it could be used as both in a pinch). Why did he ever use sikaflex as a filler?! Chocking..... Thanks for the vid! /T

@kismetadventures9 жыл бұрын
I totally share your disappointment! Through-hulls and valves are also a matter of safety, so one would expect such jobs to be done properly and even with some extra care. Shame on that mechanic! Did he install corrosion resistant (CR aka DZR) brass or just regular one?
@lifeislikesailing9 жыл бұрын
Kismet Adventures Ya so many things missed and I felt comfortable having a 'professional' doing that job. Was I ever surprised to find such a shoddy job! The bronze thru hulls were purchased at my chandlery here at the marina so I am sure they are good ones.
@kismetadventures9 жыл бұрын
Bronze is perfect, far less risks of corrosion! They definitely deserved a better installation. :-|

paul fackrell Yes I always pay after and the bill is still in discussion, but that still doesn't change the fact that I have a crappy job that has to be redone in my opinion! :(
@RobFomenko7 жыл бұрын
Understand you hired it out due to a lack of time. Still a shame that this pos installer did such a crappy job ! I would post his name so others don't get ripped off as well. The through hulls you selected... not ones I would use. Last boat I used Forespar marelon seacocks, but next one will get Tru-Design composite thru hulls. No more metal for me under water. To much risk of electrolysis. Had a boat sink due to it. But a composting toilet would have eliminated a lot of those.

@pierremitham29649 жыл бұрын
I would be more concerned that your mechanic didn't install proper seacocks those bolt holes were there for a reason. they are there to connect the flange of the seacock to the hull. you're new fittings are weaker than the original. seacocks have bolted flanges for a reason. the flange takes the twisting force of the handle off the relatively weak thin wall thruhull. I'd be having a serious chat with your mechanic as he's left you with weak below the waterline valves! those will not pass a surveyors inspection! some of those parts look suspect. The tail on your sink hose looks very yellow. usually an indication that the metal is bras not bronze! dangerous combination in sea water. brass rots away at an alarming rate!
@lifeislikesailing9 жыл бұрын
Pierre Mitham The thru hulls were in there before were very old and the new style thru hulls I found were this newer style which I why I needed the holes filed. There are two raised tabs in the thru hull near the outside opening to hold it steady while it is being installed. I don't think the marina chandlery would have sold me thru hulls that wouldn't pass an inspection, but I will go talk to them and ask some questions about them. They are bronze for sure though. :)
@pierremitham29649 жыл бұрын
Check out this article on installing seacocks. www.pbase.com/mainecruising/seacock_primer He writes excellent articles are n the subject. Your chandler should know that you need seacock, not ball valves. Huge difference in strength. All seacock use through bolts not just the old style. Go have a chat with them after reading this article. Odds are you will be more knowledgable than them on the subject. I would keep an eye on these and plan for a replace,net at next haul out. In your current new install you have mismatched threads. The ball valves use npt threads (tapered) and the thruhull is nps (straight). This means that there is realistically 1 or 2 threads making the joint and seal. Not a good arrangement. I'm not trying to scare you, but never trust the store to know what you need, they're just selling parts!
@lifeislikesailing9 жыл бұрын
Pierre Mitham I will check out the video and talk to them. I do know that the reason I replaced everything is that exact taper issue between the thru hull and ball valve. So the new thru hull and ball valves are both straight and fitted together from what I was told, but I will definitely look into this more and find out. Thanks for the info. :)
@pierremitham29649 жыл бұрын
LifeisLikeSailing - Vancouver, BC Definitely look into it, I have yet to see a ball valve with NPS threads one one end and NPT on the other (which in this case is what you would need)
