Thanks for sharing this well timed video Alfy. You have given me the ammunition for tackling at set of Barient 28s that have been sadly neglected. Looking forward to seeing some of your cruising trips this summer.

Bill Bruce Thanks Bill and I am really glad the timing was good for you to tackle your Barients! I was so intimidated about doing winch maintenance and now after I have done nearly all the winches I realized it really isn't that difficult! I am also looking forward to making the summer cruising videos!

LifeisLikeSailing - Vancouver, BC Completed servicing my B28s today and it was a joy to do them because there were no surprizes. Everything came apart easily even though it has been years since they were serviced. I did find a few of the pawl springs had lost their snap and replaced them with new ones. The pawls were engaging much better with fresh springs installed. It's funny how some springs had lots of snap left in them while others were at the end of the road/wimpy. Any way's they are working as two speeds again, so thanks again.

Dr sausage fingers She is and so am I! :) But I'm leaving to spend a month in the US soon so she'll have to wait a bit :) Once I get back here there should be lots of time for sailing :)

nice. it is not so difficult, but it can get messy. a tip: next time put something like a blanket or a roll of cloth in the gangway so you won't hear "ting- ting- splash" of little parts.;)
@lifeislikesailing9 жыл бұрын
h beek good tip! I ended up putting blanket down for the other winches for that exact reason. haha

just experience!
@lifeislikesailing9 жыл бұрын
h beek And at least no ting-ting splashes for me considering they don't make the Barient anymore! :)

still, losing an allen bolt is annoying, but any bearing stuck inside and suddenly come loose, is when it gets interesting

Great Video, Alfy! Thanks for sharing. I'm going to do mine this season. They are also Barients, but smaller. Thursday is launch day (again), so I hope I can be back on the water.
@lifeislikesailing9 жыл бұрын
justice tek That is great you will be back on in the water soon!! I also did most of the other winches on the boat (only two more to go) and they were all smaller ones. Here is a link for various winch manuals in pdf. I just downloaded the pdf for each winch I was servicing and found it these instructions quite helpful! www.cncphotoalbum.com/indexes/winches.htm

Great video!!! Another site suggested frequently changing the pawls and springs, as well. I also saw a suggestion to find a plastic bucket, just a bit wider/taller than the respective winch, cut out the bottom and then place the bucket over the top of the winch at the beginning of the project to avoid losing parts...I think I'll also take pictures to help me remember the "remove/replace" sequence!!! Excellent time lapse, too....
@lifeislikesailing9 жыл бұрын
donjvalley Thanks!! I have heard of a similar method using a cardboard box and it is a good idea for sure! I was going to take pictures the first time I actually cleaned the winch, but I found it pretty easy to remember the way it all went back together. If there are multiple set of gears like in this winch I just kept them all in their own little piles. I removed the pawls when I did the actual cleaning and once they were cleaned up they looked good and worked well. I don't know if I can get new pawls for the Barients due to them not being made anymore?

Hi there Alfy! I'm really enjoying your videos, they are very good inspiration. But they also make me feel a bit guilty when you remind me of things I will need to take care off on my own boat :-) Keep up the good work. I look forward to watch more videos from you. Kind regards Jacob

i have a question. i'm currently saving up for a live aboard sailboat of my own but as of yet i have no sailing experience but i will be taking lessons soon as its my dream to have sailboat.. anyway my question is how big of a boat does a guy really need? i'm currently looking around the 27-32 range. i will be traveling around the UK working and with hope of traveling to France, Spain, Italy etc.. my maximum budget for the boat will be around £8000 / $12350
@beek0149 жыл бұрын
Dr sausage fingers get one big enough for an inboard shower. a hot shower will do wonders for your mood when everything is cold and wet. just a thought.
@sausagefingers7149 жыл бұрын
h beek cheers for the reply.. iv currently got my eye set on a 1963 25ft folkboat. iv fallen in love with them and i don't know why!. theres one on the UK ebay site if you search for it. it sold for £500 last time. i'm tempted to sell my motorbike, pack up and live aboard while i work on it and find a temporary local job for the meantime. i know this is a little small but its not impossible to live with :)
@SailLife9 жыл бұрын
Dr sausage fingers Chances are you'll be perfectly happy aboard a boat in the 27-32 ft range :) It all depends on what you need to be comfortable, and that may turn out to be less than you'd think :) I believe Alfy's boat is 34 feet. Mine is 30 feet. Don't get too hung up on the length of the boat :) It's not the size that matters ;) I don't have standing headroom, hot water or a shower aboard my boat, and yet I'm in the process of selling my house to move aboard my boat full time. I might upgrade to a bigger boat in a few years. At that time I think standing headroom will be at the top of my list. I know a few liveaboards in the UK. Send me a PM if you want me to connect you with one of them :)
@lifeislikesailing9 жыл бұрын
Dr sausage fingers I think Mads at ***** hit the nail on the head. It all comes down to what you think will meet your needs. After I moved aboard I actually thought that I would need something bigger eventually and now I feel like I have more room than I need. Not that I would down-size at this point (because I really do love this boat) but I no longer feel the need to up-size. :)
