How to drill a shallow well by hand, and never be without water. I used a fence post auger to drill this well. I'm still getting water from it. I used 3-inch PVC as the casing and 1 1/2 as the drop pipe. I also used a foot valve at the bottom of the drop pipe, then I bought a hand pump from tractor supply and this well produces water faster than I can use it. #shallowwell #howtodrillawellbyhand #handdrilledshallowwell

Man I gotta tell ya that is slick as snot. I got a garden wayyyy out in the country and had no source of water for it. But dang if I didn't give your idea a go and got more water than I could ever use. Thank you for actually putting something informative on here. Saved my ass.

Its too late by now, but these surface water wells are not supposed to be used for potable water or consumable food gardens. Many surface contaminants will leech into this water. Good for grass, flowers, etc.

👍...my hats off to you❕ I did the same thing...however, being 70, I just didn't have the back to muscle through like you did. Went to my local tool rental store and believe it or not they had everything to drill down to 50' with a power auger...dude...My son-in-law helped and over a weekend had water, installed a submersible pump and got it connected to my irrigation system. We hit water at 30' and plenty of it! Since then we have helped several neighbors bust the water department❕ 😛

Man I'd sure like to know exactly what you rented to go down fifty feet. I've hand drilled a couple of 25' wells and it was too much work and hit or miss as to whether I got down that far or not. By the way I'm 70 also and need a shallow well to supply water to a large pond in the summer to keep it from dropping in level too much.

We pounded a 1-1/2" well by hand a few years ago. Only had to go down around 15 feet but I used an old used well point and had to open the slits with a hack saw. It works with the pitcher pump but brings up a lot of sand with it and eats the leathers quickly as well. I made a pipe pounder with an old weight bench setup. Busted butt but got it done in one day.

I just finished getting our well fixed and published the video, so KZbin recommended this one. Can't get away with this in my area, but I like to learn things just in case 😉 -- our well is 460 feet down through solid rock! -- Our well pump is nearly six feet tall! Down in the lowlands around here, they use well points that they just pound into the ground. You can buy those at the hardware store.

You could have used a bailer to get the mud out or dig the whole well. Not to be confused with a bailer bucket but it works the same way. It's a pipe of any size with a ball or flapper valve near the end . works great with mud . I 've seen wells dug with 4 and 6 inch bailers.

Great video mate! You did a magic job of what was a very complex and sizeable project for one guy to take on, especially with just hand tools and no machinery. Your project reminds me of my own experiences of trying to learn how to, by watching videos just like yours, and then putting in the hard work myself to save the enormous costs of trades people (especially here in Australia). You should be very proud of your project, your video and the end result. Just awesome! With all the money you have saved, you will be able to take your lovely wife out for many more slap up Mexican meals, buy more parts for the "Anti-Christ. 😂 Your humour was the best of all and made your video, it's what we call in Australia as "dry humour" normally from our generation and from the country/bush areas. Congratulations mate on a great video. Well done. 👍🇦🇺

Great job-and I'll bet that water has cleared up in the last 16 years! I picked up a 'Shallow Well Pump' from Harbor Fright today for my 13 foot deep hand dug well. These shallow well pumps (all of them are the same) will draw water from wells less than 20-25 feet deep. They are 120v AC but you could likely set up a couple of solar panels/inverters to beat the power company. This is my third Shallow Well Pump in 16 years-they last quite a while if you drain them before the first freeze. Usually around $160 now in 2019.

This video's been on here (KZbin) for a little over 5 years and I'm just now seeing it for the first time. Obviously that job isn't easy, but it's a lot easier than I ever would have dreamed. I wish'd I knew about this back in the early 70s, but I suppose it's better late than never. I'm going to share this video with a few friends and I know they can make good use of the information. As for me, I'm in my 60s now, and it wouldn't be very practical for me to try something like this. But I'm always intrigued by new knowledge. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us.

Very good demonstration! I intend to construct one just like yours, though I may add a submersible pump, powered by a solar panel, deep cycle gel cell and a charge regulator, etc. I will hide and disguise it all in a small wooden yard decoration I will build out of pressured/treated lumber coated with Thompson's to make it last and look nice. I will also go with the hand pump as a back-up. I too have a Berkey to provide drinkable water, but will probably install a replaceable in-line pre-filter to extend its' life. If we lost our electrical power, drinkable water would be worth it's weight in gold, a commodity you could trade for almost anything. I think you were very smart to do this. I have dug wells the same way u did it, u mite need to get a piston pump to pump the well for a few hours to clear the water then put your shallow well pump and go to it

This was 2012 --- 2 links of PVC, 1 inch or so DI. Air compressed down the hole would be good Great video! I love it.

You did a great job, but how are you going to wash the car, water the grass, and pump the well at the same time? Are you going to put a electric pump on later? Thanks for the video it was very helpful.

Ok, (just remembered how I ended up looking at this...all started with a video you uploaded about cooking 11 year old stored beans. I clicked on your channel to see what wmelse you had and got to watching this. Not sure why, I suppose I was curious, being a single 57 year old woman whi in 2022 is very concerned with this crazy world...WHAT IF I needed to make my own well.) Ha...well I have decided I probably won't be attempting this. I did enjoy the video and learning!

Looks just as good now as in the original post.. First time I ran across your videos was when you'd just started this project.. made me a subscriber then.. when I figured out how to do that. Our village does the same thing w/ water.. sewer is same price as water.. so all gardening, etc. water is charged double even tho none of it goes in the sewer.
