I think Garp is the most Important character in the series because he's tied with the most crucial characters in One piece. Through Garp's past will reveal Luffy, Luffy's mom, Dragon, Roger, Rocks, Whitebeard, Shiki, Big Mom, Kaido ect... Whether you like or dislike Monkey D. I don't think he's that disappointed that Dragon and Luffy/Ace are criminals. He understands the world isn't that black and white. At the very least not with Dragon since he knows where he's coming from. Some subtle hints that we get includes that he's still communicating with Dragon(he knows dragon saved luffy). I think with Luffy's and Ace's case, it has more to do with the fact that the marines would have to hunt them down at some point.

Haris S Nah, I, in my opinion think that Pirate King Level characters (Roger, WB, and Garp (Shiki too)) are on a whole league above both the Yonko, and Admirals. What makes you think Akainu is above the other Admirals? He was just stupid, and stubborn enough to fight WB. I’m sure that if Kizaru, and Aokiji had his personality, they would’ve done the same - and maybe even a better job at that. Roger was able to knock down a full power Yonko Level character with one literal smack, and still clash with WB (Oden did get back up, but still. Yonko aren’t weak, despite being below Pirate King Level. They’re still possibly the literal current strongest characters in the series). I just don’t see the Yonko and Admirals being anywhere near the level of Roger, Garp, or WB. Sure, maybe Shanks and possibly Kaido (and Big Mom), but the Admirals? Nah. Anyways, just my opinion. I only stated what I got based on my analysis. Feel free to disagree, I still respect your opinion despite my perspective.

I just love what garp's status as a hero just stands for. His tenacity, his will, and despite his sometimes harsh/lazy parenting, he always meant well. He talked about breaking mountains to train his haki and he holds such a high position because of sheer strength alone, no devil fruit required. He's the guy that we all can relate to in the sense that training and working hard goes a long way in life. And because of so many just human qualities and having the story build him to be what seems like all the emotion that the other admirals fail to show.

The Rocks defeating them (The past which effects the future), Defeating the pirate king (Roger), being a Marine. Emotional effect due between family and the Marines. The relationship between Dragon and Garp How he has so many connections which there's more he has all this. I can say this. Garp probably even knows where the One Piece is or if it even exist. (Which is does) I'm sure he knows, but that's my opinion. He's a great character and it's amazing to see everything unravel I wonder if Garp and Roger were ever friends growing up, I'm sure they were and they were great friends as well (Just my theory)

Dont forget to mention Garp's EXPRESSION of his desires; you mentioned his choice to train new marines, but it's all linked to a personal shortcoming (in his eyes). It should be basically assumed that Garp intended to lead his son to take pride in the Marines as he did. After presumably failing that, he attempted to mold Ace... then Luffy... and now he takes Koby and Helmeppo as his "sons" and finally finds presumed success in the quickly-rising and well-respected Koby. As a character Garp was always an enigma to me. Until recently all we knew is that he cornered Roger several times and that’s why we thought he was called a hero. At the same time, he never did catch him, so it felt like ok he put pressure on the KOTP but I didn’t think that really constituted legendary status. With the information we have now, he seems so OP, the way Sengoku talked him up I’m excited to hear more of his many stories. There has to be so much character development, like his relationship with Dragon and so on. I want to know how he feels, he hates the Celestial Dragons but he also denounces pirates, how does he feel about his son and grandson infamy? This guy is full of mysteries I never really gave thought to.

Man, Garp is the most conflicted and tragic character to me in One Piece. He's left to serve an institution in his old age which he knows is flawed, has to go against family members, has to see Sakazuki become Fleet Admiral and just has to endure so much. I think he is seeing the parallels in his younger years and in the current events and yet his hands are bound due to not being as strong as he was and being a marine. Its a tragedy.

My initial thoughts on Garp. He’s a beast, seriously strong, he is on yonko level even in his older age. He is also a non DF user so again even more impressive. At the present time I think he’s the only one who could actually hold his own against shanks. After video thoughts: I still think the same. He is more stronger. When he heard about Rox pirates comeback at Reverie, he smiled and told his co-officers not get worried. He called the Admirals amateur and sat on admirals throne at the summit. He is stronger above Fleet Admiral Sengoku (Garp was the last resort at the marineford war if they can't stop whitebeard, that's why Sengoku did not want Garp to fight early). if Sengoku did not agree with Shanks, Shanks vs Garp would be more thrilling that Garp vs Whitebeard.

(at the pause) Garp is by far the best character, you see his rough-housing side at work, his fun-loving side when Luffy and ace are growing up, his stern side throughout trying to push Ace and Luffy to be men that can be strong enough to do the right thing (whatever that may be for each), and you see his distaste for the world nobles, you know he does well by his job (destroying 3 pirate ships that were likely pirating around the Goa Kingdom after the paramount war)... Simply, he is developed like many other strong leads and you can like him for his sense of justice, strength, fatherliness, and tough-love. It's clear he has an eye for helping those that want to work hard and succeed (Koby and Helmepo) and he doesn't short-change them, but makes them work for it. You know he is compassionate for his family as you see his struggle in the Marineford arc. He is easily in my top 5 favorite characters easy because of all the above. I really want Toei to go all-out when it catches up to the Manga and shows (hopefully) the teaming-up of Sengoku, Garp, and Gol D Roger against the Rocks Pirates. After the vid... The reason Garp could be a marine and it's sensible with him being a D, and that's likely due to the fact he has a sense of justice and doing right for people on an individual level. In the grand scheme of things, it's more likely the vast majority of people only experience the world nobles through taxation. However, if Garp, an extremely powerful man, can impact individuals with his strength and brute force, it's by being a marine. Pirates are great only through the lens of the Straw Hat crew. It's easily the case the vast majority of pirates are more like Buggy (pillaging) and murderous. It's clear with his strength he can directly take out evil from the world by being a marine. By sheer number count he can directly help more people as a marine. Him doing right by this measure makes sense.

Garp and Dadan moment, is the only time I've ever cried in One Piece. I don't ever cry in One Piece, but when Dadan pins down Garp and yelling at him asking him "Why?!" For all i know only the gorosei know the existence of Imu sama.. The moment Sengoku and Garp found out the truth, the marines might split into two factions in the final arc.. The marines that will support the WG which will be led by Akainu and The marines that will side to the revolutionaries and pirates which will be led by Sengoku and Garp. I come up with this idea because of the summit war and the possible fight between Akainu and Garp.

Great video about a top 5 favourite character of mine. I remember when the chapter of Garp introducing himself in Enies Lobby dropped and I wanted to learn more about him so badly. I had to wait years for that moment on the scaffold of Garp and Ace. That is one of my favourite moments in the whole series and I felt so connected to Garp in that moment.

Quick Counterpoint, Its not said anywhere that Dragon is Garp's son. The only thing that Oda has said about luffy's mother is that she is plain and strict. My current head-canon is that the reason Garp hates the Celestial Dragons is that they killed his daughter who was also a successful marine. If that was the case it could also explain why Dragon started the revolutionary army and why he keeps such a distance with Luffy.

Realistically yes he's probably the best character, he's tied closely to the most important elements of the story in more ways than anyone, he's one of the most dynamic characters, and the character with the most unanswered questions (even though so much is known about him).

I just realised, Garp fought and bested Don Chinjao which means he probably has Conqueror's Haki, and in the interaction between Garp and Gol D Roger showed that the flame in the lantern went off and on again. Maybe another foreshadowing of what Conqueror's haki can do?

What’s hype about garp is that he does what so many great anime characters do: He reaches a level where he can both uphold his convictions while respecting his adversary. IMO, this is a major factor when speaking in terms of anime characters because someone who can both stand for what they believe in while avoiding the trap of demonizing people fighting against you tends to be (for many anime) a strength/OP signifier. What makes Garp different is that - aside from what I just mentioned - Garp also has a very interesting back story and Oda has somehow managed to show us how much conviction Garp has without showing us what he has so much conviction for. I don’t buy Garp just being a military-man and think there is something else that motivates him; that said, we don’t know what that is exactly? I think this is a major part of what makes him so dope: What is motivating this man? It’s not a love of the world government, so what is it? IMO, Garp lowkey wants someone to topple the world government but is committed to being a marine to help buffer the amount of damage being committed by the world government’s actions and complicity in the harm done by people like Doffy.

Garp is a very important character because he ties in to just about all of the important characters and the history of how the world got to where it is ... he’s obviously one of the most powerful marines and his duty is locked with love cause his family are criminals but he’s a hero so he’s very important .. I can’t wait to see his story

I think Garp is the shining example of what the Navy should be. And he serves an important role as someone who will eventually run the navy or train Koby and Helmeppo to the point where they can run the Navy and reign in a new, peaceful era.

Before vid. Garp is not just a good father figure to one of our favorites like luffy, ace, coby. But he is also a slept character who has alot of potential of being important. As a marine, he seeks true justice. And his relationship with Roger shows that he can see past the title of pirates. His only flaw is that he is sometimes, if not, is putting being a marine first before anything else like his emotions

Garp strikes me as someone who "learns to play the game, to beat the game". He is mindful that if he rises higher in his rank, he'll be subjected to serve directly under the Celestial Dragons yet still remains in the Marines to utilize his rank and power to pursue Moral Justice versus Absolute Justice, which is the main doctrine in the forces. Garp has an innate ability to want to nurture rather than to dictate and command despite his power, making others observe him as "eccentric". Kind of an oxymoron as a vice admiral, but definitely a rebel deep down.

Garp is literally the most accountable guy ever. He wants to improve the world but he is burdened by how much he knows. I’m sure he wishes the answer was simple but like many things in life it’s complicated. He wants to recruit a new generation of heroes that can fix the marines but he also doesn’t want the marines to stay he way they are. You could even say that Garp and dragon have the same goal but Garp has his own way of doing things. I’m sure that his decisions with ace were influenced by his grand plan the overthrow the marines from the inside by making admirals like coby who are moral

I honestly believe Garp is an AMAZING character. Father figure from the older days who got a great job raised his family well and loves his family very much. Hes a real life old school pops. But the world changed and Freedom became more accessible and possible to the younger generations. Hes old and kinda stuck in his ways so he wants his kids to go in the “right” direction like alot of fathers in real life but as generations progress so do ideals. i love Garp, this is at the point whrre you told us to pause. So I def had to speak on him cuz i already rock wit him. He had an impossible choice to make and still fought jus in his own way

Before Watching: Not an understatement to say he is the best character, he very well could be. His strength, personality, morality, the fact that him being a D. and being a marine on top of that creates a very mysterious vibe around Garp. He is almost a nakama to Roger, and probably he is the person that Roger respects the most. Being a D., he probably shares a checkered life along with other D.'s and I am very much anticipate to see his past with his own son. At this moment, Garp showed us readers outrageous profile in terms of strength and achievement (think about a guy who tenryuubitos wants to get rid of but can't because of his achievements and popularity). There are still a lot more to see from him and the depths of the Monkey D. family. So yeah, he is actually the core pillar of all the main characters in One Piece, which makes this story equally strong. After Watching: Glad that we are on the same point and also glad that I could break down Garp's charachter appropriately and love him so much.

Garp was already OP to me , but then i heard about how he got his nickname of " Hero of the Marines" his team up with Roger 38+ year back. Not sure if this is correct but it states he was a Vice Admiral then. Not sure how old Garp is but for 40 of those he was a marime Vice Admiral, that just crazy.

I could imagine that something happened in the past that made Dragon criminal without him actually being the bad guy.... like maybe he stood up for someone or whatever and the WG just villainized him for that... which could be the reason Garp was so obsessed with his grandsons being marines. Like he knows the safest path would be a marine especially since they are corrupt
