The conversation about how to handle his aggression toward her step dad and strange men approaching when out in the public was SOOOOO valuable. It would be amazing to see Joel do a session out in public dealing with this issue, if that's possible!

I’m the boss of the dogs in my home, has always been that way. My husband wasn’t raised with pets, so he doesn’t get it. My dog that I have now has been the hardest in regards to reactivity, pulling, and a few other quirks. This video reminds me that I need to be in charge and stay in charge and to keep the training up. We keep improving, so on the right track. Gentle Leaders 💪, that dog changed a lot with one.

Hello. Did the dog changed after time you have used gentle leader also without it? Or no matter how long you are using GL after you use classic leash he gets back to his reactivity. Thanks.

@@jurajkrajcik4410 I have to go back and forth with the gentle leader and the flat collar, haven’t consolidated completely yet, but he is much better. Yesterday at obedience training class and six other dogs, didn’t pay attention to any, did so well with the flat collar on. At agility day he goes in the gentle leader as the environment is too much and he’ll react, but not as often. On walks, we are able to get past a dog with minimal fuss. It’s taken a while, don’t give up, we’ve turned the corner. I just keep watching the videos and refining my technique as I get different pointers from them and get better myself.

For the comments about male/female leadership, it's about getting across you are the leader. I have an J. Akita and she messes around with my husband way more than me, because when I correct her I'm dead serious, I'm not joking and she knows it. If he walks her she is all over the place, the moment I take the leash she *knows* (side note, I'm not a tall super strong girl, I'm very average). Now, he's new to the dog world and I'm teaching him, gotta be patient haha.

He’s much better. Hopefully owners will watch back these videos, so can practice. I had a Rottweiler that went for training with this little gal down the road years ago. She was no nonsense. We got to her house and Chester jumped out of back of car without permission, and she picked him up, put him back in car and said, STAY!!! Chester was like, OK, whatever you say mam! He always waited after that one lesson.

Just had a new client yesterday, lab mix, both fear and protective rescue from Puerto Rico. Met them in front yard, dog was over threshold, had shook both humans hands, only when the Male after my instruction to, positive punish the barking, is when she stopped, she never barked at me again, we then went for a walk and my goodness she was almost perfect as they said she was reactive on leash, not once did she outburst after we walked and they handed me the leash. She did however bark when we entered the home and i went to leave, but we also had him correct her again. We will trust and continue the process until she becomes confident and aware of her job. Well Done, Joel.

Obviously I do my best i make her sit and try to calm down and it’s working but it is funny and also it might be a problematic. Good content. We have a 10 year old small terrier that we rescued. Amazing dog in most respects (affectionate, great with other dogs, great off leash walker, I use her as a small tool to train my larger, younger pup - she looks like a small rabbit kind of), but one thing, holy shit she's terrified of my father-in-law for whatever reason. Even when he calls the house, she starts barking aggressively. Definitely something about his voice.

Not sure if you will read this, but here's hoping. All the way from South Africa. I have 10 month old Boerboel, well socialized and not neutered. Lately, introducing people into our home has been a challenge. The breed is known to be great with kids, however, he is not doing well with new kids coming into the house and I have to separate him by closing him up in a different part of the yard. I tried all the methods i normally do which has been successful in the past and a lot of what you talk about, sleeping in the bed / being the boss I have done since 8 weeks, he isn't on our level per say. Where I think people / dog aggression is somewhat easier for you to manage is because these dogs are in an unknown environment (although I love the channel), I would really like to see you work with a dog like this in their home, or in the Step dad's home and i know that's not easy to do, time and video wise. Boerboels are very protective over their home/space, he's 110 pounds and still very much a pup. I would love to have him be a lot easier to introduce. My conclusion is hormonal, young and figuring things out, however, I don't want this to escalate, he's going to be 200pounds and very string in a year. I\ll continue to correct and get a gentle leader. Thanks for video's like this, helps a lot, and potentially saves further frustration.
@mkester03
@mkester03 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you think about this technique, but my trainer was big on claiming space (at least for me and my GSD). So, for someone approaching in a park that I wanted to speak to (or was willing to engage with), I put him slightly behind me, sitting if necessary , and i take a half step forward so I'm claiming the space between us and the "other". At that point, I have security under control and my GSD is on backup. I've found that any time I take the "security" lead, my shepherd falls in line. My wife has suggested I try to fix the leash reactivity that is worst with me by screaming at any dog I see before he barks. I'm not sure it wouldn't work but I'm not over the social stigma enough to give it a try. I have noticed that the times I've yelled at people for having their off leash dog charge us or I've stepped into a charging/barking dog, my dog is far less aggressive though still very stimulated.

A couple of minutes into the video and its simple the step dad is nervous around the dog so it makes the dog nervous the step dad needs to practice calmness around the dog do not have eye contact with the dog and if the dog growls this was not even addressed if the dog growls the dog is to be confronted and conveyed to that growling at the step dad is not allowed. The dog should not be allowed near the step day either until it gets real calm. Finally this dog is pacing around to much it needs to be able to be told to sit still and wait more than likely when they are at step dads place this dog gets to go wherever it wants.

Would love to see a bunch of random people meeting the dog as mentioned @7:00 with all the corrections while dog is constantly barking. I have a 5 month old Gsd that is reactive (not aggression with intent to bite) to anybody in public just talking from far away or making any movements towards us. The weird part about it is that she’s been in group training since 8 weeks going twice a week. There are 15-30 dogs/handlers and she isn’t like that with anybody there even though there are always new people and dogs.

I also have a dog with natural protection tendencies and he has reacted to creepy drunk guys a few times but basically only those kinds of people ever, thankfully, but the other day I got to pass my drunk neighbours in my apartment building in my small staircase and they were big guys obviously drunk and asking if he would bite and Im just trying to not engage and be able to pass while advocating for my own space with my hand just because the staircase is small. And I guess since I felt confident though I obviously didn't like the situation my dog stayed on my left as we barely passed by them with no reaction at all. But I don't doubt that if I had acted differently or they would make sudden movements that he would sense that it's different as he has done in the past.

Awesome! Plus the fact that you said as long as they continue to do what you just taught them, they don't have to come back. What are your thoughts on wearing a Baskerville muzzle on a walk in our busy neighborhood. It seems to give the dog more confidence to actually go up and say hi to people. I will say, let him come to you and I'm watching his body language the whole time so will tell the people when to stop petting him. My husband doesn't like that idea since he's a Dobe, but I don't let him meet strangers without it being on because I don't trust that he won't do anything. He never has to anyone else, but he's snapped at family members including us when petting goes on too long, even if he asks to be petted. Any suggestions would be helpful. Have usually only seen this type of behavior with little dogs, not 100lb Dobes. His full older brother can meet/greet anyone without any issues or a muzzle on.

It looks like it is easier for the man to control their dog than the woman. I have also noticed this with my dog. My dog will listen to me much better than my wife. I was wondering if Mr. Beckman could do a video using a woman as the main source of correction? Is it harder for a woman to take charge of a reactive dog or is it just a matter of being assertive? I get We and our dogs don't have to like everyone but there's no need to be an A.Hole about it. Prince and Chester seem to both choice a mutual respect to not be bothered with each other, in the end they are governed by the smell of each other. Chester sure liked the little Boader Pipa. btw Chester Not marking everything was interesting, Narla will mark after any other dog.

Any of his loose-leash videos, he’ll mention, “He’s on a leash! He doesn’t get to decide to just stop any time he wants.” So you’re the boss, be the Boss. When he starts to slow down to mark, you start walking faster! You decide if and when he gets to stop and sniff or mark. I suggest that for the time being, NO MORE MARKING on your walks at all. He can mark in the backyard, dog park, etc. but keep him focused when walking on leash. A very brisk pace with lots of stops, turns, circles is a training walk versus a relaxing stroll. The time for those relaxing strolls will be after you’ve taken the time for training and he understands that a leash means business, right? You’ve got this; you can do it!

My biggest observation that I always consistently see with this videos is that its the owners that can't follow simple instructions. Its unfortunate because all I see is good dogs with bad behaviors that have been allowed. In this video and part one there is a moment where you explain to Keegan that he should be two hands ready to pull the dog when he comes close to Prince, you even gesture on how to place your hands and Keegan still uses one hand and you can see his reaction is slow and one handed so he is unable to really move his dog effectively away from Prince. Nothing actually happens but it would annoy me since you are being very clear. The same thing happens with the girl when she handles the dog and you are having the male introduced behind the fence. She gets one decent "pop" right at the beginning and then every subsequent "Freak Out" is barely even a casual walk away which was so weird to watch (The causal pulls are @11:14) It was clear the first weird interaction around the 9min mark were successful when she actually did the pop so why not continue with that level of energy. Its always been clear from back in the day from all of Cesar Milan's shows on mainstream TV that is has "mostly" been the attitude of the owners that is a clear driver in the bad behaviour of the dogs and once Cesar has the leash a lot of the bad behaviour stops within the first 2-3 corrections. I am happy that the owners brought the dog to Joel, just wished more people paid better attention when he speaks. Our 3yr old Female Euro Doberman had over 4 trainers until I found someone like Joel who was easily able to articulate directions and why certain behaviours caused problems with the dog and now our girl has been doing amazing for the last 2.5yrs. I do however agree with Joel on one big factor, most dogs respond better instinctually with Male owners when they are assertive and clear with commands. I think like Joel mentions, its the tone of voice, its the strength felt in the leash and those types of aspects that the dogs respond too. My wife, has been working on this but still has an issue speaking with authority to our Dobie and I can see that she doesn't listen to my wife on the first command because of this at times unless I am in the room. Anyways, great job again Joel.

Yesterday, I watched a video of yours with a young lady and her large Russian Terrier. Your reaction to her dog scaring you was 100% unprofessional and rude! You later admitted some fault was yours, the dog and the dog owner? You are supposed to be professional, knowledgeable, and in control. That was all on you, man up and own it! That young lady and her dog are there for you to teach, guide, and support them not scold her and her dog. You were clearly fearful of the dog ( which most people would) yet again I say, you are the professional, act like one. I've seen you do some good work with the dogs, you dropped the ball on that one and could not own your own shortcomings. Work on your people skills.
